A comparative study of naproxen gel and flufenamic acid gel in the treatment of soft tissue injuries.

1990

One hundred patients were enrolled in a single-blind, randomized, parallel group study to compare naproxen gel (10%) with flufenamic acid gel (3%) for the treatment of soft tissue injuries. Demographic variables, the distribution of diagnoses (tendinitis, bursitis/synovitis, synovitis, periarthritis, epicondylitis) and initial severity of the complaint were similar between the two groups. The gels were applied 2 to 6 times per day, as required, and conventional clinical indices were evaluated at Day 1 (on entry to the study), Day 3 and Day 7. Global assessments of efficacy were made by both physicians and patients at the end of the study. By Day 7 both treatments had produced a highly signi…

Sensing Chiral Drugs by Using CdSe/ZnS Nanoparticles Capped withN-Acetyl-L-Cysteine Methyl Ester

2013

Chiral quantum dots (QDs), differing in their core or shell size and, consequently, in their optical properties, were synthesized by the treatment of commercially available amine-capped quantum dots with methyl ester N-acetyl-L-cysteine (CysP). Interestingly, their colloidal methanol solutions remain stable for several months. Their NMR and IR spectra were in accordance with CysP binding to the QD surface through two anchoring groups; its thiolate (strongly bound) and the carbonyl group of its ester (weaker bound) group, whereas their circular dichroism (CD) spectra showed a new broad redshifted band, suggesting that the attachment to the QD surface modified the conformational equilibrium t…

Influence of drug polarity upon the solid-state structure and release properties of self-emulsifying drug delivery systems in relation with water aff…

2009

To overcome low oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs, self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS) have been noted as a promising strategy. However, incorporation of drugs into SEDDS composed of Gelucire44/14 could induce interactions not yet well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of drug polarity upon the solid-state structure of SEDDS formulation, particularly in terms of wettability, thermal behaviour and microscopic aspects and their effect upon the release properties of the SEDDS. Model drugs were naproxen and sodium naproxen (10% w/w), two drugs with similar chemical structure but different water solubilities. Both drugs had an effect o…

Determination of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in water and urine using selective molecular imprinted polymer extraction and liquid chromatog…

2016

Abstract A selective solid-phase extraction was employed for the improvement of the determination of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in continental water and urine samples. Ketoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and ibuprofen were selected as target analytes due to they are the most frequently administered and consumed NSAIDs. These compounds were extracted using molecular imprinted polymers and determined by liquid chromatography with diode array (DAD), and tandem-mass spectrometry (MS–MS) detectors. Performance of DAD and MS–MS detectors was evaluated throughout this study. The obtained limits of quantification, after a 50-fold preconcentration solid-phase extraction, varied fro…

Quality control of pharmaceuticals containing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs by micellar liquid chromatography

2002

A liquid chromatographic procedure is described for the determination of acemetacin, diclofenac, indomethacin, ketoprofen, nabumetone, naproxen, piketoprofen, and tolmentin in pharmaceutical preparations. The compounds were separated on a Kromasil C18 analytical column, with a guard column of similar characteristics; the mobile phase was 0.06 M cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, at pH 7, containing 10% 1-butanol. At a flow rate of 1 mL min−1 the elution time of the most retained compound was 23 min. Limits of detection were between 0.01 μ g mL−1 for diclofenac and 0.2 μ g mL−1 for naproxen. The proposed method enables the determination of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in pharmaceutical…

Distinguishing the roles of carrier and biofilm in filtering media for the removal of pharmaceutical compounds from wastewater

2017

Abstract Pharmaceutical compounds (PCs) represent a large group of micropollutants in wastewaters (WW) worldwide. Many PCs are resistant to conventional WW treatment. Moreover, for some PCs the removal process is reversible. The aim of this study was to test three newly developed ceramic carriers for biofilm formation and PCs removal. The testing of untreated WW samples by liquid chromatography coupled to Orbitrap mass spectrometry allowed to detect the occurrence of 18 PCs in the range from 26 ng/L to 20,688 ng/L, with the highest concentrations found for caffeine. Besides, among PCs with concentrations above 1,000 ng/L, ibuprofen (19,234 ng/L), naproxen (1,405 ng/L), xylazine (1,366 ng/L)…

Comparison between sodium dodecylsulphate and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as mobile phases in the micellar liquid chromatography determination of …

2004

The retention behaviour of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) using micellar mobile phases of sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) is studied and compared with that observed with micellar mobile phases of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). A liquid chromatographic procedure for the determination of acemetacin, diclofenac, indomethacin, ketoprofen, naproxen and tolmetin in pharmaceutical preparations is described. The proposed system uses a Kromasil C18 analytical column and a solution of 0.15 M SDS at pH 3 with 10% 1-propanol as mobile phase. Under these conditions, the studied NSAIDs elute between 6 and 10 min at a 1 mL min(-1) flow rate. Limits of detection (LOD) are lower than 0.…

The anti-inflammatory drugs diclofenac, naproxen and ibuprofen are found in the bile of wild fish caught downstream of a wastewater treatment plant.

2012

Pharmaceutical residues are ubiquitous in rivers, lakes, and at coastal waters affected by discharges from municipal wastewater treatment plants. In this study, the presence of 17 different pharmaceuticals and six different phase I metabolites was determined in the bile of two wild fish species, bream (Abramis brama) and roach (Rutilus rutilus). The fish were caught from a lake that receives treated municipal wastewater via a small river. Prior to analyses, the bile content was enzymatically hydrolyzed to convert the glucuronide metabolites into the original pharmaceuticals or phase I metabolites. The solid phase extracts of hydrolyzates were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass sp…

Bioavailability of pharmaceuticals in waters close to wastewater treatment plants: Use of fish bile for exposure assessment

2012

Pharmaceuticals are ubiquitous in surface waters as a consequence of discharges from municipal wastewater treatment plants. However, few studies have assessed the bioavailability of pharmaceuticals to fish in natural waters. In the present study, passive samplers and rainbow trout were experimentally deployed next to three municipal wastewater treatment plants in Finland to evaluate the degree of animal exposure. Pharmaceuticals from several therapeutic classes (in total 15) were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in extracts of passive samplers and in bile and blood plasma of rainbow trout held at polluted sites for 10 d. Each approach indicated the highest exposure…
