Exploring teachers’ stories of writing : a narrative perspective
2018
This study takes a narrative perspective to examine teachers as writers and autobiographical creative writing as a way for promoting teachers’ professional development. In a creative writing group for Finnish primary and secondary school teachers, the teachers expressed themselves and explored their lives and identities through autobiographical creative writing. The aim of this study was to examine the stories the teachers tell about their relationship to writing and the goals they set for their professional and personal development in the writing group. Through thematic analysis, seven descriptive themes were found in teachers’ narratives of writing. Furthermore, based on the narrative ana…
“She is where I’d want to be in my career” : Youth athletes’ role models and their implications for career and identity construction
2019
Abstract Objectives While role models have been documented to play a vital role in adolescents’ career development and identity exploration, in sport psychology they remain an untapped resource. The present study drew on narrative inquiry to explore the patterns of role model selection by adolescent student-athletes and the narrative maps these role models provide for self-construction. As a second objective, the study sought to understand the impact of gender on the selection and meaning of role models. Method Eighteen Finnish student-athletes (10 women, eight men) aged 17-18 participated in conversational interviews. We analysed the data with thematic and structural narrative analyses. Re…
REAL HUMANS? : Affective imaginaries of the human and its Others in the Swedish TV series Äkta människor
2019
According to the Swedish science fiction TV series Äkta människor (Real Humans, SVT and Matador film 2012-2014), humanoid robots called “hubots” are replacing the human workforce in care work and assembly line industries. Against the backdrop of current debates about immigration and citizenship in the Nordic countries, this article does a close, contextual reading of the series, exploring how the hubots influence work and family life. We are particularly interested in how hubots tie in with the cultural circulation of affect in relation to Otherness and how responses towards the “not-quite” human or dehumanized Other are negotiated in the present-day Nordic cultural imaginaries. What kinds …
Infertility as a lonely struggle? : Coping stories of previously infertile women
2023
In this narrative study, we explored the meaning infertile women attribute to social support in coping with their infertility-related challenges. Written accounts and episodic interviews with 26 previously infertile Finnish women were used as data. Two different coping story types emerged: coping alone and coping with support. In the coping alone type women neither sought nor received support. Their coping appeared as a lonely struggle. In the coping with stories, women turned to their spouses, peers, or professionals, but still emphasized that they would have needed more support. Based on our findings, we underline the need for individually tailored support. peerReviewed
Dialogicality in teaching process drama : three narratives, three frameworks
2018
This case study explores dialogicality in teaching process drama through the narratives and practices of three experienced drama teachers of the Open University. Dialogue is understood here in the context of ‘I-Thou’ attitude and as the phenomenon of heteroglossia. The analyses of the videotaped reflective interviews with the teachers and process dramas revealed a polyphonic picture of dialogicality in the teaching process, in which juxtapositions of communion and alterity are favoured. These findings may help drama teachers to become more conscious about the challenges and possibilities of generating a fluid and energised dialogicality in process drama. peerReviewed
Elämäntapamuutoksen sisäinen tarina
2020
Elämäntapasairaudet, kuten ylipaino, on yksi yhteiskuntamme merkittävimmistä terveysongelmista. Elämäntapamuutosinterventioilla saadaan harvoin aikaan pysyvää painonpudotusta, koska elämäntapamuutos on pitkäkestoinen ja moniulotteinen prosessi. Elämäntapamuutoksen tutkiminen subjektiivisesta näkökulmasta käsin voi auttaa ymmärtämään paremmin elämäntapamuutosta sisäisenä prosessina ja kokemuksena. Tämän tutkimuksen lähestymistapa on narratiivinen eli kerronnallinen. Tutkimuksen t…

The tellers justify their late career phases and choices between work life trajector…
