Attitudes of Italian dental and dental hygiene students toward tobacco-use cessation
2010
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the smoking habits of Italian dental and dental hygiene students and to assess their knowledge on the health effects of cigarette smoking and their attitudes toward tobacco-use cessation (TUC) in dental practice. Materials and methods: Data was collected from 220 students attending the Dental and Dental Hygiene Schools (DS and DHS, respectively) at the University of Palermo (Italy). Results: The percentage of smokers amongst DS and DHS students was similar (32.78% vs. 32.5%) with 67.77% of DS students and 77.5% of DHS agreeing that the damages to health caused by smoking were covered in their didactic course work. Application of Cell Culture for the Production of Bioactive Compounds from Sponges: Synthesis of Avarol by Primmorphs from Dysidea avara
2000
Among all metazoan phyla, sponges are known to produce the largest number of bioactive compounds. However, until now, only one compound, arabinofuranosyladenine, has been approved for application in humans. One major obstacle is the limited availability of larger quantities of defined sponge starting material. Recently, we introduced the in vitro culture of primmorphs from Suberites domuncula, which contain proliferating cells. Now we have established the primmorph culture also from the marine sponge Dysidea avara and demonstrate that this special form of sponge cell aggregates produces avarol, a sesquiterpenoid hydroquinone, known to display strong cytostatic activity especially against ma…
Universality of the Triangular Theory of Love: Adaptation and Psychometric Properties of the Triangular Love Scale in 25 Countries
2021
The Triangular Theory of Love (measured with Sternberg’s Triangular Love Scale – STLS) is a prominent theoretical concept in empirical research on love. To expand the culturally homogeneous body of previous psychometric research regarding the STLS, we conducted a large-scale cross-cultural study with the use of this scale. In total, we examined more than 11,000 respondents, but as a result of applied exclusion criteria, the final analyses were based on a sample of 7332 participants from 25 countries (from all inhabited continents). We tested configural invariance, metric invariance, and scalar invariance, all of which confirmed the cultural universality of the theoretical construct of love …
Virtual Currency: New Step in Monetary Development
2016
Abstract Money is perhaps the best recognized and at the same time less understood figure of economy. During the evolution of a monetary science starting from the eighteenth century and fundamental works on such questions as true nature and main functions of money, the approach and theories about monetary science have changed significantly up to date not reaching the final state. The twenty-first century can be characterized with a vast development of technologies and the increase use of the internet which significantly succeeded the development of monetary system introducing a new phenomenon - virtual currencies. While remaining rather illusive, virtual currencies have been broadly noted b…
Deconstructing Machos, Constructing People. Narratives of Alienation from Hegemonic Masculinity in Spain
2022
A Holonic Approach to Shakespeare: The Digital Reference System (DRS)
2012
Prefatory RemarksWhen hypertext was made available on the Internet after 1994 it shaped the concepts of public domain and free access. The web server and browsing system that Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau designed, determined the future digital, editorial and cultural developments for traditional audiences and digital natives alike. They quickly became the generalized interface tools and thus contributed to today's editorial standards. As they helped to create this innovative environment called the Internet, they also helped to establish many standards such as URL, URI, HTTP HTML or XML, which provided interoperability amongst different platforms and allowed internationalization.Shake…

Abstract In the present work the authors report the result of their food ethnobotanical researches, which have been carried out in Sicily during the last thirty years. The authors underline those species that are partially or completely unknown for their culinary use and they illustrate other species that local inhabitants suggested in the prevention or treatment of symptomatologies caused by a refined diet, poor in vegetables. These data want to contribute to avoid the loss of traditional knowledge on uses and recipes concerning wild food botanicals, and to encourage further studies for those species th…
Traditional knowledge and practice of the Triassic variegated clay from Silesia (Krasiejów), Poland, in human medicine.
2021
AbstractBackgroundKrasiejów clay (in German: Krascheow) became famous following the discovery of numerous fossilised bones of Upper Triassic amphibians and reptiles, which have been extracted from clay deposits since the 1980s. These organic remnants remained in Krasiejów clay due to the large amount of slime deposits and the optimal concentration of basal mineral salts. The main aims of the paper are to determine the historical evolution of the use of clay in Silesia for therapeutic purposes and to provide a summary of the historical uses of Krasiejów clay as a medical treatment, based on the knowledge of the local population.MethodsThe mode of utilisation of Triassic variegated claystone t…
