Essays On European Natural Gas Market

2018

Hydrogen underground storage—Petrographic and petrophysical variations in reservoir sandstones from laboratory experiments under simulated reservoir …

2018

Abstract Fluctuating energy production by renewables is one of the main issues in transition times of energy production from conventional power plants to an energy production by renewables. Using excess produced electricity (windy/sunny periods) to convert water to oxygen and hydrogen and storing the hydrogen in depleted oil-, gas fields or sedimentary aquifer structures would provide the option to recover and convert hydrogen to electricity in periods with an energy demand. Research focus is here the pore space in the geological underground where still few studies exist. In static batch experiments up to six weeks long, under different reservoir-specific conditions; regarding pressure, tem…

Abstract. To date, very little is known about the distribution of natural gas hydrates in sedimentary matrices and its influence on the seismic properties of the host rock, in particular at low hydrate concentration. Digital rock physics offers a unique approach to this issue yet requires good quality, high-resolution 3-D representations for the accurate modeling of petrophysical and transport properties. Although such models are readily available via in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray tomography, the analysis of such data asks for complex workflows and high computational power to maintain valuable results. Here, we present a best-practice procedure complementing data from Chaouachi et al.…

Tuning the selectivity of light hydrocarbons in natural gas in a family of isoreticular MOFs

2017

Purification of methane from other light hydrocarbons in natural gas is a topic of intense research due to its fundamental importance in the utilization of natural gas fields. Porous materials have emerged as excellent alternative platforms to conventional cryogenic methodologies to perform this task in a cost- and energy-efficient manner. Here we report a new family of isoreticular chiral MOFs, prepared from oxamidato ligands derived from natural amino acids L-alanine, L-valine and L-leucine, where, by increasing the length of the alkyl residue of the amino acid, the charge density of the MOF's channels can be tuned (1 > 2 > 3), decreasing the adsorption preference towards methane over lig…

Energy Saving with Absorption Equipment: a Case Study

2005

The paper deals with the results of a feasibility study performed at DREAM which is related to the possibility of using reject heat from an Electric Utility (which has a Combined Cycle Unit with Gas and Steam turbines belonging with ENEL Pro. at Termini Imerese, Palermo). The Utility lies near an Industrial District where there has need for feeding a Cooling Plant for Foodstuff Stocking at two different temperature levels: 0 °C and -18°C. The feasibility study covers both technical feasibility of a suitable cooling plant which use two separate absorption equipment, working with the pair Ammonia-Water, and economic feasibility of the venture. The feasibility study pertains: to the optimal de…

Physical - chemical interaction of injection waters with depleted gas formations

2021

In order that the physical - chemical interaction of the injection water with the porous-permeable or fissured medium of reservoirs do not lead to their degradation, it is necessary that the waters to meet a number of quality conditions. The treatment and conditioning of the injectable waters is imperative to do so due to the fact that their provenance is different, such as reservoir waters, wastewater resulting from various operations – petroleum operations, meteoric waters, etc. and, in particular, due to the very large volumes of injected water. Failure to follow the steps associated with the water treatment process inevitably leads to premature reduction of the injection wells receptivi…

A Comprehensive Model for the Auto-Ignition Prediction in Spark Ignition Engines Fueled With Mixtures of Gasoline and Methane-Based Fuel

2018

The introduction of natural gas (NG) in the road transport market is proceeding through bifuel vehicles, which, endowed of a double-injection system, can run either with gasoline or with NG. A third possibility is the simultaneous combustion of NG and gasoline, called double-fuel (DF) combustion: the addition of methane to gasoline allows to run the engine with stoichiometric air even at full load, without knocking phenomena, increasing engine efficiency of about 26% and cutting pollutant emissions by 90%. The introduction of DF combustion into series production vehicles requires, however, proper engine calibration (i.e., determination of DF injection and spark timing maps), a process which…

Molecular and isotopic composition of free hydrocarbon gases from Sicily, Italy

2004

Chemical and isotopic data have been used as geochemical tracers for a genetic characterization of hydrocarbon gases from a total of eleven manifestations located in Eastern and Central-Southern Sicily (Italy). The molecular analysis shows that almost all the samples are enriched in methane (up to 93.2% Vol.), with the exception of four gas samples collected around Mt. Etna showing high mantle-derived CO2 content. Methane isotope signatures suggest that these are thermogenic gases or a mixture between thermogenic gases and microbial gases. Although samples from some mud volcanoes in Southern Sicily (Macalube di Aragona) show isotope signatures consistent with a mixing model between thermoge…

Underbalance well completion - a modern approach for mature gas fields

2017

The exploitation of natural gas fields from Transylvanian Basin started a century ago. The majority of these fields were discovered and developed in the last century, from 1950 to 1970. So, these reservoirs have over 50 years of production historical. These are mature fields with a very low reservoir pressure. Now, for some of these reservoirs the pressure is 10 – 20 % of initial values. The biggest challenge for a production company is to make completions and recompletions in depleted reservoirs wells. At the beginning was not a problem to do a workover in these wells because the completion fluids were lost in the reservoir and the pressure helped the wells to clean up. Now, because the re…

Current Trends in the Exploitation of Mature Gas Fields to Capitalize the Energy Potential

2021

The exploitation of mature natural gas fields is a topical issue in the industry given that most of the production, about 70%, comes from these reservoirs. Implementation of the project management into the exploitation of mature gas reservoirs has a notable ascension because of the fact that in the execution of the operational programs always has developed a mechanism to achieve the objectives in a sustainable manner. The project management in gas industry it is known as rehabilitation concept or integrated reservoir development, which has a major impact on increasing the recovery factor. The paper intends to present the current trends in the exploitation of mature gas fields by applying th…
