Hedging spark spread risk with futures

2018

Abstract This paper discusses the spark spread risk management using electricity and natural gas futures. We focus on three European markets in which the natural gas share in the fuel mix varies considerably: Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. We find that spark spread returns are partially predictable, and consequently, the Ederington and Salas (2008) minimum variance hedging approach should be applied. Hedging the spark spread is more difficult than hedging electricity and natural gas price risks with individual futures contracts. Whereas spark spread risk reduction for monthly periods produces values of between 20.05% and 48.90%, electricity and natural gas individual hedg…

Electrodynamic Control of the Combustion Characteristics and Heat Energy Production

2015

ABSTRACTElectric field effects (EFE) on combustion characteristics, heat energy production, and composition of polluting emissions have been investigated experimentally for different types of fuels (natural gas, biomass) providing experimental study of the EFE in a district heating boiler and complex modeling experiments in a small-scale pilot device. The DC field-induced variations of the produced heat energy, efficiency of heat energy production, flame characteristics, and the composition of polluting emissions have been studied for a positively biased axially inserted electrode and negatively biased (grounded) heat surfaces by varying the applied DC voltage, net current, and consumed ele…

Natural gas hydrates vs. induced dysfunctions in the hydrocarbon extraction process

2021

Cantoned fluids in porous-permeable or fractured media of reservoirs have acquired during the geological time special properties. The fluids from the reservoir could be or not a mixture of reservoir water, liquid hydrocarbons and gaseous hydrocarbons. Considering if inside of a reservoir there are two types of substances like natural gas and reservoir water which may be in the form of vaporous than the condition of saturation of gases with water vaporous is fulfilled. This process is taking place due to thermodynamic equilibrium resulting the so-called gas humidity. This state corroborated with a certain chemical composition plus favourable values of pressure and temperature may be decisive…

The Acceptable Alternative Vehicle Fuel Price

2019

Historically, petroleum fuels have been the dominant fuel used for land transport. However, the growing need for sustainable national economics has urged us to incorporate more economical and ecological alternative vehicle fuels. The advantages and disadvantages of them complicate the decision-making process and compel us to develop adequate mathematical methods. Alternative fuel (compressed natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and ethanol fuel mixtures), the standard prices and their ratios were investigated. A mathematical model to determine a critical ratio between alternative and conventional fuel prices had already been developed. The results of this were investigated. The results sho…

Experimental Research on Technological Parameters Optimization of Natural Gases

2015

The paper contains a modeling application with the help of factorial experiments of influence variations of some parameters of natural gases over the hourly flow delivered towards population. In order to completely and correctly draft the experiment we followed and highlighted the objective functions of the process to be analyzed, and then there were identified the factors that influence the objective function to be analyzed. In the end the experimental data was processed and solutions were proposed.

Preliminary Experimental Study on Double Fuel HCCI Combustion

2015

AbstractThis paper regards an experimental study on a particular internal combustion engine process which combines Double Fuel combustion with Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) using mixtures of natural gas (NG) and gasoline. The tests performed on a CFR engine demonstrate that HCCI combustion can be achieved using NG-gasoline mixtures without knocking occurrence for low to medium engine load varying the proportion between the two fuels. The main advantage of this new combustion process relies on the noticeable higher engine efficiency obtained with respect to conventional spark ignition operation, and on the strong reduction of NOX emissions.

The Response of European Energy Prices to ECB Monetary Policy

2019

To our knowledge, this paper is the first to discuss the response of European energy commodity prices to unexpected monetary policy surprises from the European Central Bank (ECB). Using the Rigobon (2003) identification through heteroscedasticity method, we find a significant and positive response during the crisis period for Brent and coal. Similar results are obtained by other authors for European financial assets in this period. This result reinforces the idea that during this period, financial assets and some commodities positively responded to conventional and unconventional expansionary monetary policy measures, increasing confidence about the survival of the European monetary union. …

Numerical investigation on water exchange of shale samples

2020

Interest in the hydraulic and mechanical characterization of shales has grown in recent years, because of their application in the context of energy geotechnics. In the frame of nuclear waste disposal shales are considered as host formations for the placements of nuclear waste at high depths. In the frame of hydrocarbon production they are considered as unconventional reservoirs, from which extracting natural gas. Understanding how fluids flow through shales is then a key aspect for both fields of application. This paper focuses on the analysis of the transport of water vapour through laboratory samples. After reviewing the balance and flow laws that govern the transport of fluid in unsatur…

A New Simple Function for Combustion and Cyclic Variation Modeling in Supercharged Spark Ignition Engines

2022

Research in the field of Internal Combustion (IC) engines focuses on the drastic reduction of both pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions. A promising alternative to gasoline and diesel fuel is represented by the use of gaseous fuels, above all green hydrogen but also Natural Gas (NG). In previous works, the authors investigated the performance, efficiency, and emissions of a supercharged Spark Ignition (SI) engine fueled with mixtures of gasoline and natural gas; a detailed research involving the combustion process of this kind of fuel mixture has been previously performed and a lot of experimental data have been collected. Combustion modeling is a fundamental tool in the design and optimi…
