Transitions in Herd Management of Semi-Domesticated Reindeer in Northern Finland
2008
In northern Finland, reindeer-herd management has experienced two major transitions: extensification of intensive herding, and development of supplementary/corral feeding in winter. The transitions were studied in six herding associations in different parts of the Finnish reindeer management area. It was suggested that intensive herding turns into more extensive forms as the reasons for intensive herding (predation, reindeer disappearing to foreign areas, protection of agricultural fields) gradually ceased to exist. The results of the study, based on interviews of elderly reindeer herders, were variable. In the three southern areas intensive herding changed to the free ranging system at the…
Factors influencing the distribution, abundance and nest-site selection of an endangered Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus) population in Sicily
2003
Egyptian vulture (Neophrom percnopterus) breeds in Sicily and, in 22 years of monitoring, has shown a decline followed by a slight recovery. We used Generalised Linear Models to predict: (1) the distribution range, (2) the habitat selection within the range, (3) the quality (i.e., occupation rate, breeding success) of breeding sites. Some 60% of Sicily proved to be unsuitable, being either too densely forested and without cliffs for nesting, or too densely populated, along with intensive agriculture. The models converged, indicating that the pairs select a precise upland habitat where low cliffs, distant from urban areas, are surrounded by arboreal crops and Mediterranean vegetation. The va…
Design at the root of biophilia. Imitation. Nature
2021
According to the current state of research on the phenomenon of biophilia, the positive influence of nature's elements on humans has long been widely understood. Since the negative impact of urbanised areas on quality of life was noticed, human-friendly architecture has been redefined, where the physical and mental well-being of people using buildings, remains highly dependent on their contact with the environment. Selected examples of existing buildings analyzed two different approaches to contemporary biophilic architecture; one where nature is the pedestal of the whole building and one where the interpretation of nature translates into technological, engineering or structural solutions. …
Editoriale. Modernità del paesaggio
2011
Eugenio Turri, Il paesaggio come teatro). Per molti (architetti inclusi), il concetto di “paesaggio” é astratto; non é chiaro chi debba agire e con quali strumenti si possa incidere diffusamente e concreta- mente per migliorare, recuperare ed ev…
Human Sociability in Antonio Montecatini's (1537–99) Commentary on Aristotle's Politics
2021
The present article delves into the history of political philosophy by discussing human sociability in Antonio Montecatini's (1537–99) commentary on Aristotle's Politics. The focus is on a philosophical analysis of three interrelated ideas that Montecatini discusses: (1) Aristotle's dictum that human beings are political animals by nature; (2) naturalness of the household; and (3) the nature and origin of political communities. Montecatini's views are briefly related to those of John Case (ca. 1546–1600), and they are also contextualized within the late medieval commentary tradition on the Politics, but the main aim is to clarify Montecatini's philosophical position and examine the ways in …
Un dilettantismo felice: ricostruzione testuale di Tvergastein
2023
For the past few years - few compared to the long historical duration of the human species on Earth - we have been witnessing a profound cultural revolution, perhaps even an anthropological one. Cultural because, after all, this revolution concerns first and foremost knowledge - and before that, belief, and after that, everyday life, human and social experience, and widespread sensitivity. Anthropological because this knowledge is essentially ethnological, of an ethnology that, however, denies itself in order to embrace the totality of things, or, better, to allow itself a holistic look that is not only aimed at homo, in order to attribute to itself an object of study, a much broader field …
The History of Art that grows on trees. Art experience trough drawing, re-drawing and someone else’s drawing.
2018
The paper tells about an art education project addressed to the students of the Faculty of Education but also to the teachers in service in schools as a reflection on the role of drawing in art education. The aim is to accompany the participants into an “immersion” within the art world, and in particular the relationship between art and nature (one of the possible attitudes of art towards nature) to overcome prejudices and stereotypes often perpetuated in the drawing education. A form of education about the look passing through a first phase of activation of the cognitive transfer, a second one of “entry” into the work of art, and ends in a third one that, through the graphic medium, the dr…
