Valores del mar en la obra de Pedro Ferrer Calatayud

This paper seeks to offer an interpretation of the seascape work of Valencian painter Pedro Ferrer Calatayud (1860-1944). Starting from his artistic context, two essential values of the seascape aesthetics can be found in Ferrer's paintings: firstly depth, which is linked to the abyss and represented by the shipwreck, and then temporality, linked to eternity and the cyclical time and rendered through the relationship of the sea with other elements in nature. Our analysis proves that the sea in this painter, far from being merely a subject, was also a means of searching new ideological values and technical ways which would eventually lead to fresh artistic trends in the early 20th century.

El tema del naufragio ha sido una constante en la cultura visual occidental y ha servido para adjetivar asuntos morales y políticos de diverso signo. El presente texto aborda las relaciones del mar, el naufragio y la Esperanza en el complejo panorama de la tradición cultural de occidente para, a modo de telón de fondo, cartografiar las dimensiones de dichos temas en la cultura contemporánea. Las preferencias políticas ocupan el lugar de la estética a la hora de afrontar los naufragios de la posmodernidad y delinean el compromiso social del historiador.
