Contrasting Automatic and Manual Group Formation: A Case Study in a Software Engineering Postgraduate Course
2021
This paper proposes the comparison of a group formation approach based on an evolutionary algorithm with a manual approach performed by an instructor with ten years of experience on this task. The groups were created based on the professional, psychological, and experience profile of each student. The results obtained demonstrated the algorithm’s potential, reaching an average similarity of \(83.46\%\) with the groups formed manually by the instructor.
Does Navigation Always Predict Performance? Effects of Navigation on Digital Reading are Moderated by Comprehension Skills
2016
<p align="left">This study investigated interactive effects of navigation and offline comprehension skill on digital reading performance. As indicators of navigation relevant page selection and irrelevant page selection were considered. In 533 Spanish high school students aged 11-17 positive effects of offline comprehension skill and relevant page selection on digital reading performance were found, while irrelevant page selection had a negative effect. In addition, an interaction between relevant page selection and offline comprehension skill was found. While the effect of relevant page selection was strong in good offline comprehenders, it was significantly reduced in weak offline c…
Attention-Based Landmark Selection in Autonomous Robotics
2007
This paper describes a robotic architecture that uses visual attention mechanisms for autonomous navigation in unknown indoor environments. A foveation mechanism based on a bottom-up attention system allows the robot to autonomously select landmarks, defined as salient points in the camera images. Landmarks are memorized in a behavioral fashion by coupling sensing and acting to achieve a representation that is view and scale independent. Selected landmarks are stored in a topological map. During the navigation a top-down mechanism controls the attention system to achieve robot localization. Experiments and results show that our system is robust to noise and odometric errors, being at the sa…
Attention-based environment perception in autonomous robotics
2007
This paper describes a robotic architecture that uses visual attention mechanisms for autonomous navigation in unknown indoor environments. A foveation mechanism based on classical bottom-up gaze shifts allows the robot to autonomously select landmarks, defined as salient points in the camera images. Landmarks are memorized in a behavioral fashion, coupling sensing and acting to achieve a representation view and scale independent. Selected landmarks are stored in a topological map; during the navigation a top-down mechanism controls the attention system to achieve robot localization. Experiments and results show that our system is robust to noise and odometric errors, being at the same time…
The Literary Construction of Journalism Education: A Review of the Course Literature in the Nordic Academic Journalism Programmes
2019
This article investigates the course literature in the curricula of 12 major journalism schools at Northern European universities. This analysis of the course literature listed in documentation of bachelor programmes traces how journalism education institutions constitute their knowledge base on journalism. It is found that Nordic journalism students are required to read almost four books per study credit on average. Undergraduate academic journalism programmes are professionally oriented, and professional literature by non-scientific publishers occupies a major place in the course literature. A strong emphasis is placed on professional books written in the domestic language, with an averag…
Statistical analysis of latency outcomes in behavioral experiments
2011
In experimental designs of animal models, memory is often assessed by the time for a performance measure to occur (latency). Depending on the cognitive test, this may be the time it takes an animal to escape to a hidden platform (water maze), an escape tunnel (Barnes maze) or to enter a dark component (passive avoidance test). Latency outcomes are usually statistically analyzed using ANOVAs. Besides strong distributional assumptions, ANOVA cannot properly deal with animals not showing the performance measure within the trial time, potentially causing biased and misleading results. We propose an alternative approach for statistical analyses of latency outcomes. These analyses have less distr…
Degree course change and student performance: a mixed-effect approach
2015
This paper focuses on students credits earning speed over time and its determinants, dealing with the huge percentage of students who do not take the degree within the legal duration in the Italian University System. A new indicator for the performance of the student career is proposed on real data, concerning the cohort of students enrolled at a Faculty of the University of Palermo (followed for 7 years). The new indicator highlights a typical zero-inflated distribution and suggests to investigate the effect of the degree course (DC) change on the student career. A mixed-effect model for overdispersed data is considered, with the aim of taking into account the individual variability as wel…

A Morphosyntactical Complementary Structure for Searching and Browsing
2006
This paper is a proposal for the construction of a pseudo-net built with precisely defined tokens describing the content and structure of the original WWW. This construction is derived by morphosyntactical analysis and should be structured with a post-processing mechanism. It is provided also an in-depth analysis of requirements and hypothesis to be stated to accomplish with this goal. An in-depth analysis of requirements and hypothesis to be stated to accomplish this goal is also provided. Such derived structure could act as an alternate network theme organization with a compacted version of the original web material. This paper does not describe nor study the post-processing approaches. I…
