Early Social Isolation Stress and Perinatal NMDA Receptor Antagonist Treatment Induce Changes in the Structure and Neurochemistry of Inhibitory Neuro…

2017

AbstractThe exposure to aversive experiences during early life influences brain development and leads to altered behavior. Moreover, the combination of these experiences with subtle alterations in neurodevelopment may contribute to the emergence of psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia. Recent hypotheses suggest that imbalances between excitatory and inhibitory (E/I) neurotransmission, especially in the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala, may underlie their etiopathology. In order to understand better the neurobiological bases of these alterations, we studied the impact of altered neurodevelopment and chronic early-life stress on these two brain regions. Transgenic mice displaying fl…

cis-[(η5-C5H5)Fe(η1-CO)(μ-CO)]2, the poor relative betweencisandtranstautomers. A theoretical study of the gas-phase Fe L3-edge and C and O K-edge XA…

2021

The relative stability oftrans-[(η5-C5H5)Fe(η1-CO)(μ-CO)]2(trans-I) andcis-Itautomers in a vacuum and in solvents with different dielectric constants (ε) has been investigated by exploiting density functional theory (DFT). Theoretical results indicate that, in agreement with experimental evidence,trans-Iis more stable thancis-Iin a vacuum (∼1.5 kcal mol−1;ε= 1), while the opposite is true in media withε> 7. Differently from solution, DFT outcomes pertaining to the vapor-phasecis-I⇆trans-Iequilibrium at T = 368 K, the temperature at which the Fe L2,3-edges and the C and O K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data ofIhave been recorded, ultimately indicate thetrans-Ipredominance (∼93…

Dark exposure affects plasticity-related molecules and interneurons throughout the visual system during adulthood

2020

Several experimental manipulations, including visual deprivation, are able to induce critical period-like plasticity in the visual cortex of adult animals. In this regard, many studies have analyzed the effects of dark exposure in adult animals, but still little is known about the role of interneurons and plasticity-related molecules on such mechanisms. In this study, we analyzed the effects of 10 days of dark exposure on the connectivity and structure of interneurons, both in the primary visual cortex and in the rest of cerebral regions implicated in the transmission of visual stimulus. We found that this environmental manipulation induces changes in the expression of synaptic molecules th…

Chronic fluoxetine treatment alters the structure, connectivity and plasticity of cortical interneurons

2014

Novel hypotheses suggest that antidepressants, such as the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine, induce neuronal structural plasticity, resembling that of the juvenile brain, although the underlying mechanisms of this reopening of the critical periods still remain unclear. However, recent studies suggest that inhibitory networks play an important role in this structural plasticity induced by fluoxetine. For this reason we have analysed the effects of a chronic fluoxetine treatment in the hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of transgenic mice displaying eGFP labelled interneurons. We have found an increase in the expression of molecules related to critical period pla…

NCAM (CD56) Expression in keratin-producing odontogenic cysts: aberrant expression in KCOT

2015

Background: Keratin-producing odontogenic cysts (KPOCs) are a group of cystic lesions that are often aggressive, with high rates of recurrence and multifocality. KPOCs included orthokeratinised odontogenic cyst (OOC) and parakeratotic odontogenic cysts, which are now considered true tumours denominated keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOTs). GLUT1 is a protein transporter that is involved in the active uptake of glucose across cell membranes and that is overexpressed in tumours in close correlation with the proliferation rate and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging results. Methods: A series of 58 keratin-producing odontogenic cysts was evaluated histologically and immunohistochemi…

Information Dynamics Analysis: A new approach based on Sparse Identification of Linear Parametric Models*

2020

The framework of information dynamics allows to quantify different aspects of the statistical structure of multivariate processes reflecting the temporal dynamics of a complex network. The information transfer from one process to another can be quantified through Transfer Entropy, and under the assumption of joint Gaussian variables it is strictly related to the concept of Granger Causality (GC). According to the most recent developments in the field, the computation of GC entails representing the processes through a Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model and a state space (SS) model typically identified by means of the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). In this work, we propose a new identification …

PSA Depletion Induces the Differentiation of Immature Neurons in the Piriform Cortex of Adult Mice

2021

Immature neurons are maintained in cortical regions of the adult mammalian brain. In rodents, many of these immature neurons can be identified in the piriform cortex based on their high expression of early neuronal markers, such as doublecortin (DCX) and the polysialylated form of the neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM). This molecule plays critical roles in different neurodevelopmental events. Taking advantage of a DCX-CreERT2/Flox-EGFP reporter mice, we investigated the impact of targeted PSA enzymatic depletion in the piriform cortex on the fate of immature neurons. We report here that the removal of PSA accelerated the final development of immature neurons. This was revealed by a h…
