Dressed states of a quantum emitter strongly coupled to a metal nanoparticle
2016
Hybrid molecule-plasmonic nanostructures have demonstrated their potential for surface enhanced spectroscopies, sensing, or quantum control at the nanoscale. In this Letter, we investigate the strong coupling regime and explicitly describe the hybridization between the localized plasmons of a metal nanoparticle and the excited state of a quantum emitter, offering a simple and precise understanding of the energy exchange in full analogy with cavity quantum electrodynamics treatment and a dressed atom picture. Both near-field emission and far-field radiation are discussed, revealing the richness of such optical nanosources.
Near Field of Strongly Coupled Plasmons: Uncovering Dark Modes
2012
Strongly coupled plasmons in a system of individual gold nanoparticles placed at subnanometer distance to a gold film (nanoparticle-on-plane, NPOP) are investigated using two complementary single particle spectroscopy techniques. Optical scattering spectroscopy exclusively detects plasmon modes that couple to the far field via their dipole moment (bright modes). By using photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM), we detect in the identical NPOPs near-field modes that do not couple to the scattered far field (dark modes) and are characterized by a strongly enhanced nonlinear electron emission process. To our knowledge, this is the first time that both far- and near-field spectroscopy are carr…
Dielectric versus topographic contrast in near-field microscopy
1996
Using a fully vectorial three-dimensional numerical approach (generalized field propagator, based on Green's tensor technique), we investigate the near-field images produced by subwavelength objects buried in a dielectric surface. We study the influence of the object index, size, and depth on the near field. We emphasize the similarity between the near field spawned by an object buried in the surface (dielectric contrast) and that spawned by a protrusion on the surface (topographic contrast). We show that a buried object with a negative dielectric contrast (i.e., with a smaller index than its surrounding medium) produces a near-field image that is reversed from that of an object with a posi…
Near-field optical contrasts in the Fresnel evanescent wave
1998
The surface waves generated by total internal reflection at the surface of a transparent material may be viewed as quasi-two-dimensional, because they decay exponentially in the direction normal to the sample surface. These waves are appropriate to analyze polarization effects associated with light confinement phenomena in near-field optics. In this paper we derive four useful analytical relations governing the near-field contrast around dielectric nanometer-sized particles versus a limited number of external parameters. In the $p$-polarized mode, unlike to what happens with the electric near field, we show that the magnitude of the magnetic near-field contrast can be adjusted by increasing…
Elastic Metasurfaces for Deep and Robust Subwavelength Focusing and Imaging
2021
International audience; Metasurfaces are planar metamaterials with a flat surface and a subwavelength thickness that are able to shape arbitrary wave fronts such as focusing or imaging. There is a broad interest in the literature about subwavelength focusing and imaging based on bulk metamaterials while the utilization of metasurfaces for elastic waves has rarely been reported. Here, we present a type of elastic metasurface consisting of a line of gradient resonant pillars for robust deep subwavelength focusing and imaging of elastic waves in a plate. Numerical approaches supported by analytic Huygens-Fresnel demonstrations show that the subwavelength full width at half maximum (FWHM) behav…
Chromatic compensation in the near-field region: shape and size tunability
2005
We report a diffractive-lens triplet with which to achieve wavelength compensation in the near field diffracted by any aperture. On the one hand, the all-diffractive triplet allows us to tune, in a sequential way, the Fresnel-irradiance shape to be achromatized by changing the focal length of one diffractive lens. On the other hand, we can adjust the scale of the chromatically compensated Fresnel diffraction field by shifting the aperture along the optical axis. Within this framework, we present an extremely flexible white-light Fresnel-plane array illuminator based on the kinoform sampling filter. A variable compression ratio and continuous selection of the output pitch are the most appeal…
Relationship between scanning near-field optical images and local density of photonic states
2001
From numerical calculations based on Green's dyadic formalism, we show that a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) working with a point-like illuminating probe delivers images that contain features directly related to the local density of photonic states (LDOS). More precisely, an unambiguous identification of the partial LDOSs (x, y or z polarized) can be made in the SNOM images when the solid angle of detection reaches 2π sr.
Study of a Novel High Permeability Ferrite Sheet Intended for Near Field Communication Systems
2019
The reduction of embedded portable devices involves a magnetic field interference problem when it integrates Near Field Communication (NFC) due to the presence of conductive surfaces such as ground planes, batteries or metallic enclosures. This contribution is focused on analyzing the ability of an innovative magnetic shielding based on flexible sintered ferrite sheets (FSFS) with the aim of improving the performance of that kind of systems. Thereby, a NFC emitter antenna is characterized when it is close to a conductive surface through an electromagnetic (EM) scanner. The EM scanner composed by a matrix of near field probes that make it possible to determine the effectiveness of the FSFS. …
Near‐field optical addressing of single molecules in coplanar geometry: a theoretical study
2001
Photonic transfer through elongated optical structures of submicrometre section microfabricated at the surface of dielectric or semiconductor samples can be enhanced by an appropriate structuring of the local refraction index. We show from computerized simulations that both the light localization and the spectroscopic properties of such structures can be used to selectively excite, in coplanar geometry, individuals molecules located in the near-field.
Currents reconstruction by means of a new 2D extrapolation matrix
2007
The equivalent currents reconstructed on the surface of an antenna from its far field measurements have a limited resolution. This is because just the visible part of the spectrum, i.e. the inner part of the circle of radius k (the wavenumber), can be obtained with this technique. The zero padding technique is used for improving the precision; however this technique does not improve the resolution and additional methods must be applied. One of the most used is the Gerchberg-Papoulis algorithm. This technique obtains the non visible spectrum from just the visible region and the maximum size of the antenna. The main disadvantage of this algorithm is that, since it is iterative, it takes a lon…
