Double blind randomized clinical trial comparing minimally- invasive envelope flap and conventional envelope flap on impacted lower third molar surge…

2022

The latest trend in surgery is to look for minimally invasive procedures, with fewer complications and a shorter recovery time. This study aims to compare the minimally- invasive envelope flap, with smaller incision and fewer dissection and the conventional envelope flap, with a 20mm incision, on impacted mandibular third molar surgery, focusing on the hypothesis that there were no differences in postoperative outcomes. A double-blind randomized clinical trial was designed to compare both incisions, focused on determining the approach with minor postoperative side-effects and minor impact on quality-of-life. A total of 60 patients were enrolled for the study if their presented impacted mand…

Modulation of salivary inflammatory markers and proteomic analysis in HNC and OSCC patients undergoing radiotherapy

2021

Head and neck cancer (HNC) includes malignant tumours that most commonly arise from the oral mucosa or lining of the head and neck regions. They are characterized according to their primary site of origin as malignancies of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, pharynx, larynx, salivary glands and oral cavity. The majority of these neoplasms are epithelial tumours, among them the 90% are squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). HNC including the Oral Squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), is the sixth most common neoplasia worldwide with an incidence estimated at 650,000 cases and 330,000 deaths per year. Despite all of the diagnostic and therapeutic advances, the 5-year survival rate remains relatively …

Prognostic value of HSP27 in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: a retrospective analysis of 57 tumours.

2006

Background: The aims of the present study were to assess the prevalence of HSP27 expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and to verify whether HSP27 can be considered to be a marker of prognosis in patients with OSCC. Materials and Methods: The immunohistochemical expression of HSP27 was evaluated in 57 OSCC, who received standard treatment and monitoring. After grouping for HSP27 expression, OSCCs were statistically analysed for the variables age, gender, histological grading, TNM, staging and survival rate. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Results: HSP27 was found to be reduced in 31 OSCC and was normally expressed in 26 OSCC. The pattern and intensity of HSP…

Informed consent in dentistry and medicine in Spain: Practical considerations and legality.

2021

The healthcare practice of dentistry, as well as medicine, is framed within a legal environment. Patients have the right to know all the information related to any action performed on them and dental or medical doctors are obliged to obtain their patient?s prior written informed consent (IC) before undertaking any healthcare procedures. Here we reviewed the legality and jurisprudence in Spain regarding IC. We also used INFLESZ text readability analysis software to analyse a sample of official Spanish informed consent documents (ICDs) from different surgical and interventional procedures related to dentistry and oral cavity interventions. It is a mistake to confound IC with ICDs. This error …

Cavernous sinus metastasis from oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

2007

Metastasis to the cavernous sinus from head and neck cancer is uncommon and has been previously reported by a few authors. It is usually a late manifestation of the primary tumor and may be the first evidence of a widespread dissemination of the disease. Main clinical findings are those related with involvement of cranial nerves III to VI as they pass through the cavernous sinus. Although diagnosis may be difficult, the appearance of clinical and radiological findings of cavernous sinus involvement in a context of head and neck cancer must alert us about an intracranial metastatic infiltration. In most cases treatment is palliative with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. The prognosis of thi…

Wewnątrznaczyniowe dwuetapowe leczenie tętniaków aorty brzusznej z użyciem Heli-FX EndoAnchor System

2019

Materiał i metody: Autorzy niniejszego artykułu proponują zastosowanie leczenia dwuetapowego. Pierwszy etap stanowiła implantacja przedłużki aortalnej tuż poniżej odejścia tętnic nerkowych i…

Modal analysis for random response of MDOF systems

1990

The usefulness of the mode-superposition method of multidegrees of freedom systems excited by stochastic vector processes is here presented. The differential equations of moments of every order are written in compact form by means of the Kronecker algebra; then the method for integration of these equations is presented for both classically and non-classically damped systems, showing that the fundamental operator available for evaluating the response in the deterministic analysis is also useful for evaluating the response in the stochastic analysis.

Evaluation of the different exposure parameters for the accurate diagnosis of peri-implantitis severity in digital panoramic radiography.

2022

To evaluate the accuracy of the diagnosis of peri-implant bone defects? severities in digital panoramic radiographs obtained at different tube voltage and/or tube current settings. Two different sizes of peri-implant bone defects (type 1 and type 2) were prepared after the implants were inserted into 29 bovine rib blocks. Digital panoramic radiographs were obtained at eight different tube voltage and/or tube current settings for all rib blocks. Implant images were cropped separately. The average intensity value (AIV) of cropped images were analyzed using Adobe Photoshop CC software. The Kruskal-Wallis H test was used to compare AIVs. All cropped images were evaluated using a five-point Like…

Application of the Information Bottleneck method to discover user profiles in a Web store

2018

The paper deals with the problem of discovering groups of Web users with similar behavioral patterns on an e-commerce site. We introduce a novel approach to the unsupervised classification of user sessions, based on session attributes related to the user click-stream behavior, to gain insight into characteristics of various user profiles. The approach uses the agglomerative Information Bottleneck (IB) algorithm. Based on log data for a real online store, efficiency of the approach in terms of its ability to differentiate between buying and non-buying sessions was validated, indicating some possible practical applications of the our method. Experiments performed for a number of session sampl…
