The effect of physical activity counseling on diabetics' mobility : results of a secondary analysis

2013

The preservation of mobility is essential for maintaining an independent and active lifestyle in old age. However, diabetes greatly increases older people’s susceptibility to mobility loss, leading to an increased risk of dependence. Given the increased prevalence of diabetes with age, and the increasing incidence of the disease worldwide, public health initiatives for preventing mobility loss with age must also prove effective for diabetics. The screening and counseling for physical activity among older people (SCAMOB) study examines the effectiveness of physical activity counseling for the prevention of mobility loss in an older population. Although the cohort as a whole has shown positiv…

Snowball ICA: A Model Order Free Independent Component Analysis Strategy for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Data

2020

In independent component analysis (ICA), the selection of model order (i.e., number of components to be extracted) has crucial effects on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain network analysis. Model order selection (MOS) algorithms have been used to determine the number of estimated components. However, simulations show that even when the model order equals the number of simulated signal sources, traditional ICA algorithms may misestimate the spatial maps of the signal sources. In principle, increasing model order will consider more potential information in the estimation, and should therefore produce more accurate results. However, this strategy may not work for fMRI because …

An inverse problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation in a magnetic field

2020

This paper shows global uniqueness in an inverse problem for a fractional magnetic Schrödinger equation (FMSE): an unknown electromagnetic field in a bounded domain is uniquely determined up to a natural gauge by infinitely many measurements of solutions taken in arbitrary open subsets of the exterior. The proof is based on Alessandrini's identity and the Runge approximation property, thus generalizing some previous works on the fractional Laplacian. Moreover, we show with a simple model that the FMSE relates to a long jump random walk with weights. peerReviewed

The importance of environmental microbes for Drosophila melanogaster during seasonal macronutrient variability

2021

AbstractExperiments manipulating the nutritional environment and the associated microbiome of animals have demonstrated their importance for key fitness components. However, there is little information on how macronutrient composition and bacterial communities in natural food sources vary across seasons in nature and on how these factors affect the fitness components of insects. In this study, diet samples from an orchard compost heap, which is a natural habitat for many Drosophila species and other arthropods, were collected over 9 months covering all seasons in a temperate climate. We developed D. melanogaster on diet samples and investigated stress resistance and life-history traits as w…

Domestication of a Robotic Medication-Dispensing Service Among Older People in Finnish Lapland

2020

This paper presents a case study on a robotic medication-dispensing service used in the everyday lives of older people in Finnish Lapland through the concept of domestication. The study took an ethnographic approach. A total of 11 service users, practical nurses, and other health-care professionals participated; the service users averaged age 81 years (M= 81.4, SD = 5.4). The data comprised semistructured interviews complemented by observations and photographs at service users’ homes. We concluded that the domestication of the service was successful, although the service users sometimes felt that it limited their lives. The service users stated that learning and subsequently using the servi…

Public Employment Services in the New Tendencies of Active Labour Market Policies: Constraints or Resources?

2016

In line with recent labour policy reforms, as well as the European programme known as Youth Guarantee, in Italy public employment services have gained a new centrality in active labour policies. However, public employment services in Italy have been only partially modernised and many critical issues still persist. As a result, a debate on the capacity of employment services to play efficiently an active role in labour policies supply has developed. This paper analyses employment centres in four areas in Sicily ( one of the ea est regions in Italy in terms of institutional efficiency on labour policies), and their performance in the implementation of Youth Guarantee. The work shows the organ…

The Effects of Individual Characteristics of the Naval Personnel on Sleepiness and Stress during Two Different Watchkeeping Schedules

2022

Background: Naval service can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of seafarers, and the operation of warships is highly dependent on the personnel on board. Nevertheless, there is a lack of knowledge concerning the impact of seafarers’ individual characteristics on their wellbeing in a naval environment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate individual characteristics of the naval personnel that may be associated with the amount of sleepiness, fatigue and stress responses experienced during shift work and irregular working hours in a naval environment. Methods: The study took place on a Finnish Defence Forces’ Navy missile patrol boat on which 18 crewmembers served as s…
