Mathematical tools in a digital world

2012

There are many vantage points from which to gain a perspective on digital culture. The intersection of mathematics and mathematical tools with all things digital is one such vantage point. This implies an inspection of mathematical software. The broad lines that can be taken are the practice, education and application of mathematics. This thesis focuses on practice and application, disregarding education. With regards the former it is shown how the practice of mathematics itself has been affected by the increasingly pervasive computational nature of our world. From visualisation to theorem proving no area has been untouched. I programmed a subset of the fractal universe, L-Systems, into the…

World as Numbers : Living in an Algorithmic Culture

2016

There is a long tradition of trying to grasp the world around us in mathematical terms. From early man perceiving the motion of celestial bodies, to Pythagoras’ ‘celestial harmony’ and to Kepler’s and Newton’s laws of motion, calculations have provided ways to reduce the messy world of instances to a handful of mathematical formulae. Einstein’s Relativity Theory, and even more the quantum physics, complicated the situation, but still, even with random elements involved, the statistics could provide a model to understand the processes of the universe. When calculations grew ever more complex, and computers became necessary tools to deal with them, this lead to the idea of seeing the whole of…

Luonnontieteellisin analyysimenetelmin tunnistettu Akseli Gallen-Kallelan väripaletti

2020

Artikkeli on kokonaisuudessaan ensimmäinen laatuaan Suomessa ja se esittelee tutkimuksen tuloksia koskien Akseli Gallen-Kallelan käyttämiä väriaineita. Tutkimusaineisto on läpileikkaus taiteilijan taiteellisesta tuotannosta vuosilta 1880–1929.

Avainsanat: Akseli Gallen-Kallela, taiteilijatarvike, väriaine, pigmentti, taiteen materiaalitutkimus, EDXRF, polarisaatiomikroskopia.

Factors affecting acceptance of mobile content services among mature consumers

2009

The aim of this study is to increase our understanding of mature consumers as users of technological services. More specifically, the objective is to find out which factors have an effect on the acceptance of mobile content services in the target group. The services studied are mobile services, including content that is provided by a service provider. Examples of mobile content services are mobile news, mobile banking and downloading ringing tones. In order to arrive at a theoretical model, the previous literature on technology acceptance is explored from a general and a more age group-specific perspective. The literature review is multidisciplinary, concentrating on knowledge generated in m…

School-to-work transition in France: the role of education in escaping long-term NEET trajectories

2020

International audience; The aim of this paper is to analyse the school-to-work transition of young people in France, focusing specifically on those who are not in employment, education or training (so-called NEETs), in order to understand their risk of becoming and remaining NEET. Using longitudinal data from a representative national cohort of French young people leaving the educational system in 2010, this study shows how NEET status fits in more or less long-lasting ways in their career pathways. We indicate that 70% of young people experienced a NEET status at least once over the three-year period, if we retain a static and conventional definition of NEET. For most of them, NEET is a te…

Care Poverty Within the Home Space: Exploring the Emotional Experiences of Unmet Care Needs

2021

Older adults face inequalities in care. The concept of care poverty has been developed to point out how unmet care needs are not just an individual issue but a phenomenon linked to social and economic disadvantage and societal inequality. In this paper, we approach the question of care poverty by focusing on its intertwinement with emotions and the home space. We analyze how the presence, or more commonly absence, of care shapes interviewees’ descriptions of emotional experiences tied to the home space. Our data consists of 12 semi-structured interviews conducted in 2019 and 2020 with customers of outreach work for older adults in Finland. These customers typically face a situation that can…

Standardised functional assessment in long-term care for older people: perspective of Finnish care workers

2021

Objective measures and documentation are increasingly used in the care for older people to promote efficiency and productivity. A standardised assessment of functional capacity is one such measure. In this study, we examined the meanings given to standardised functional assessment by care workers who provide long-term care for older people. Gathered from eight Finnish long-term care facilities, the data consisted of one-on-one interviews with practical and registered nurses (n = 24). In the data analysis, we employed the discursive approach. We identified three discourses in the care workers’ talks that differed in the meaning given to standardised functional assessment in the process of ca…

Handgrip Strength Cannot Be Assumed a Proxy for Overall Muscle Strength

2018

OBJECTIVES: Dynapenia, low muscle strength, is predictive for negative health outcomes and is usually expressed as handgrip strength (HGS). Whether HGS can be a proxy for overall muscle strength and whether this depends on age and health status is controversial. This study assessed the agreement between HGS and knee extension strength (KES) in populations differing in age and health status.DESIGN: Data were retrieved from 5 cohorts.SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Community, geriatric outpatient clinics, and a hospital. Five cohorts (960 individuals, 49.8% male) encompassing healthy young and older individuals, geriatric outpatients, and older individuals post hip fracture were included.MEASURES: …
