Transmission electron microscopical studies on some haemolymph proteins from the marine polychaete Nereis virens.

2001

Abstract The hexagonal bilayer haemoglobin molecule from Nereis virens has been investigated in a comparative study using several different negative stain electron microscopical specimen preparations (i.e. by conventional adsorption to continuous carbon support films, by the negative staining-carbon film technique and by negative staining across the holes of holey carbon support films with air-drying and rapid freezing/cryo-negative staining). The benefits and limitations of these different approaches are indicated, with the overall conclusion that negative staining with ammonium molybdate across holes creates the best possibilities for molecular imaging, and also has the potential for the …

GENETIC BASIS OF THE TRADE-OFF BETWEEN OFFSPRING NUMBER AND QUALITY IN THE BANK VOLE

2004

One of the main tenets of modern life-history theory is the negative relationship (trade-off) between the number and quality of offspring produced. Theory predicts a negative genetic correlation between these traits since both are closely related to fitness of individuals. However, the genetic basis of the trade-off has only been tested to a limited extent in natural populations. We examined whether size and quality of offspring are negatively related to litter size in the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus. First, we found a significant negative phenotypic correlation between the number and size of offspring at birth in both laboratory and field populations of the bank vole. Second, a large…

Oral lichen planus, hepatitis C virus, and HIV: no association in a cohort study from an area of high hepatitis C virus endemicity

2004

Abstract Objectives We sought to assess the age-specific prevalence of oral lichen planus (OLP) in Mediterranean patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) and to evaluate the features of OLP in relation to sex, smoking, HCV genotype, HIV-1 coinfection, and antiviral treatments. Methods In all, 178 anti-HCV-positive adults (60 women and 118 men; age range 20-66 years) recruited from two cohorts (104 HIV-negative patients and 74 patients with HIV coinfection) underwent oral examination. Results Overall prevalence of OLP was 2.8% (5 of 178) (male/female ratio 0.2; odds ratio=0.119; 95% confidence interval=0.013-1.106), only among HIV-negative participants, always in the reticular pattern, …

Ultrasonography and alpha-fetoprotein in diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhosis

1988

The accuracy of ultrasound (US) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in 363 patients with cirrhosis (C) and a clinical suspicion of HCC was assessed. The ultrasonographic patterns of HCC and their relationship with AFP values were analyzed. Echographic patterns were distributed as follows: 47 patients had sonodense lesions; 30 patients had hypoechoic lesions; 47 had mixed-pattern lesions, and in four patients focal dilated intrahepatic bile ducts were demonstrated. The sensitivity of US was 90%; specificity was 93.3%. Serum AFP level greater than or equal to 500 ng/ml (RIA) was the first clue to the diagnosis in 71 patients (48.6%); specificity was …

Thought and Body. An activity of Logic in primary school

2015

Abstract In the recent decades, the pedagogical debate has been formerly traversed by the emergence an then by the assertion of a matured awareness on the importance of the psychomotor skills in the educational-didactic path. The interpretive bio-psycho-social matrix has today become one of the pivotal points on which the educational-didactic activity rests and develops for the training of child's personality in its full motor, mental, perceptual, emotional, sensory development. Pedagogues, educators, and training professionals are increasingly confident that, since the birth, children are sensitive to the stimuli and to the environmental intervention, therefore it's essential to know their…

Impact of Different Types of Fathers on Family Climate in Young Adulthood: A Multi-perspective Longitudinal Study on 14 to 27 Year Olds and their Fathers In a 13 year longitudinal study, the influence of three types of fathers on the family climate was analyzed. In a sample of 213 subjects, their 169 fathers and their 210 mothers, the family environment ( Family Environment Scales) was examined when the subjects were young adults (M = 26.89, SD = 1.32). The results of the study point to significant changes in family climate in those young adults who described their father as increasingly negative (N = 28) or distant (N = 11) when in adolescence. These two groups showed a more negative famil…

Job insecurity and well-being: A longitudinal study among male and female employees in finland

1999

Abstract Job insecurity has grown dramatically in Finland, as elsewhere. This study examined the relationships between a specific job stressor, i.e. job insecurity, and occupational, overall and family well-being, by utilizing one-year follow-up data collected among male and female employees in Finland. Occupational well-being was assessed via job exhaustion, overall well-being via somatic symptoms, and family well-being via work spillover into parenthood. The study was carried out by means of questionnaires, which were completed twice, in 1995 and in 1996 by employees in four organizations. This article is based on the data of those respondents (n = 219)j who participated in the study in b…

Comparison of two methods skipping cell lysis and protein extraction for identification of bacteria from blood cultures by matrix-assisted laser deso…

2019

ABSTRACT Objective Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass-spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is widely used for fast identification of bacteria from blood cultures (BC). We compared the performance of two procedures, one including a pre-enrichment step in brain heart infusion and the other a direct method using vacutainer separator gel tubes (DI), for identification of bacteria from blood cultures by MALDI-TOF MS. Material and methods We first prepared a training set of 20 simulated bacteremia specimens, including 10 Gram-negative and 10 Gram-positive species. A total of 145 non-consecutive BCs flagged as positive (68 Gram-negative rods, and 77 Gram-positive cocci) were pr…
