The XP-Endo Finisher for the removal of calcium hydroxide paste from root canals and from the apical third

2017

Background The aim was to compare the efficacy of the passive ultrasonic irrigation PUI and the Xp-endo Finisher (FKG-Dentaire, La-Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) in removing the calcium hydroxide paste from root canals and from the apical third. Material and methods Sixty-eight root canals of single-rooted teeth were shaped using the BT-Race files (FKG-Dentaire, La-Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland). Ca(OH)2 was placed in all samples except for the negative control group (n=4). Remaining teeth were randomly divided into three groups: G1-Xp (n=30), G2-PUI (n=30) and the positive control group (n=4). Removal procedure consisted of three repeated one-minute-cycles. Samples were split longitudinally, p…

Emotional and behavioral difficulties in adolescence: Relationship with emotional well-being, affect, and academic performance

2018

Abstract The main purpose of this study was to examine difficulties in behavioral and emotional adjustment and their relationship to subjective well-being, positive and negative affect, and academic performance in a representative sample of nonclinical adolescents. The sample consisted of a total of 1,664 participants (M = 16.12 years, SD = 1.36, range 14-19 years), selected through stratified cluster sampling. The instruments used were the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule for Children (PANAS-C), the Personal Wellbeing Index-School Children (PWI-SC), the ad hoc academic performance questionnaire, and the Oviedo Scale of Response Infre…

Synthesis of curcumin derivatives and analysis of their antitumor effects in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell lines

2019

We analyzed antitumor effects of a series of curcumin analogues. Some of them were obtained by reaction of substitution involving the two phenolic OH groups of curcumin while the analogues with a substituent at C-4 was prepared following an original procedure that regards the condensation of benzenesulfenic acid onto the nucleophilic central carbon of the curcumin skeleton. We analyzed cytotoxic effects of such derivatives on two TNBC (triple negative breast cancer) cell lines, SUM 149 and MDA-MB-231, but only three of them showed an IC50 in a lower micromolar range with respect to curcumin. We also focused on these three derivatives that in both cell lines exhibited a higher or at least eq…

Astrometry and photometry of digitized plates of Baldone Schmidt telescope

2021

Abstract During the 40-year photographic period of astronomical observations, the Baldone Astrophysical Observatory has accumulated more than 22,000 direct and 2,500 spectral images. In 2018, the digitization of direct astrophoto images with a resolution of 1200 dpi was completed. A processing methodology for obtaining the equatorial coordinates and photometric characteristics of the objects recorded in digitized astronegatives using the LINUX/MIDAS/ROMAFOT environment has been developed at the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Program package with success already works in seven observatories. A description of the operation of this program complex…

Proton‐Gated Ring‐Closure of a Negative Photochromic Azulene‐Based Diarylethene

2020

Abstract Proton‐responsive photochromic molecules are attractive for their ability to react on non‐invasive rapid optical stimuli and the importance of protonation/deprotonation processes in various fields. Conventionally, their acidic/basic sites are on hetero‐atoms, which are orthogonal to the photo‐active π‐center. Here, we incorporate azulene, an acid‐sensitive pure hydrocarbon, into the skeleton of a diarylethene‐type photoswitch. The latter exhibits a novel proton‐gated negative photochromic ring‐closure and its optical response upon protonation in both open and closed forms is much more pronounced than those of diarylethene photoswitches with hetero‐atom based acidic/basic moieties. …

Self-regulation, especially the regulation of emotion, is an important component of athletic performance. In our study, we tested the effect of a self-distancing strategy on athletes’ performance in an aggression-inducing experimental task in the laboratory. To this end, we modified an established paradigm of interpersonal provocation [Taylor Aggression Paradigm (TAP)], which has the potential to complement field studies in order to increase our understanding of effective emotion regulation of athletes in critical situations in competitions. In our experimental setting, we first tested the applicability of the self-distancing perspective and the athletes’ ability to dynamically adapt beside…

Electron microscopy and biochemical characterization of a 350-kDa annular hemolymph protein from the keyhole limpet Megathura crenulata

1994

The isolation and biochemical characterization of an annular non-hemocyanin hemolymph protein from a marine gastropod, the Californian giant keyhole limpet (Megathura crenulata) is presented. By analytical ultracentrifugation, the protein has a sedimentation coefficient of 12S and molecular mass of approximately 350 kDa. The subunit mass, obtained by SDS/PAGE in the presence of -SH reagent and 8 M urea, is approximately 35 kDa, thereby indicating the presence of 10 subunits in the native molecule. By negative staining, the protein is revealed in one predominant image projection as a pentagonal approximately 8 nm ring-like structure with an approximately 2-nm stain-filled centre and, in anot…

Cryptosporidium parvum: Structural Components of the Oocyst Wall

1999

Cryptosporidium parvum, an enteropathogenic parasite, infects a wide range of mammals including man and constitutes a substantial veterinary and medical threat due to its ubiquitous distribution and the stability of the oocyst stage. The oocyst wall of C. parvum is known to be extremely resistant to chemical and mechanical disruption. Isolated oocyst walls are shown by both thin sectioning and negative staining transmission electron microscopy to possess a filamentous array on the inner surface. This filamentous array can be greatly depleted by digestion with proteinase K and trypsin, but pepsin has less effect. Ultrasonication of the untreated oocyst walls produced almost no fragmentation,…

Immunoelectron Microscopy of Hemocyanin from the Keyhole Limpet (Megathura crenulata): A Parallel Subunit Model

1993

Abstract Immunoelectron microscopy has been performed using negatively stained immune complexes of keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) subunit 2 di- and multidecamers with domain-specific monoclonal antibodies. One antibody (KLH2 a macr 1) links the hemocyanin molecules in a side-to-side pattern, whereas the other antibody (KLH2 fg macr 1) links the molecules end-to-end. From existing knowledge of the domain sequence of KLH subunit 2, these data provide support for a parallel arrangement of subunits within each decamer. Ten N-terminal a macr: domains are then present at the noncollar region of each decamer with 10 C-terminal g macr domains at the collar region. The immunonegative staining data …

Hill Runner's Physiology, Performance and Nutrition: A Descriptive Study.

2021

Objectives: The aim of this descriptive study was to characterise anthropometric variables, aerobic capacity, running performance and energy intake and expenditure of hill runners in free-living conditions, and to investigate the relationship between age, anthropometric variables, aerobic capacity and running performance. Methods: Twenty-eight hill runners participated in this study (17 males and 11 females; aged 18–65 years). Body fat percentage estimate, sum of eight skinfolds (triceps, subscapular, biceps, iliac crest, supraspinale, abdominal, front thigh and medial calf) and maximal oxygen capacity (VO2max) were assessed in a laboratory setting. Participants also completed a timed hill r…
