Key advantages of the leverage points perspective to shape human-nature relations

2021

This perspective paper synthesises the special issue 'Human-nature connectedness as a leverage point for sustainability transformation'. Based on the articles in this special issue, we aim to foster the operationalisation of the leverage points perspective to shape human-nature relations to enable sustainability transformations. Specifically, we draw on four key advantages of the leverage points perspective: (i) the explicit recognition of deep leverage points; (ii) the ability to examine the interactions between shallow and deep system changes; (iii) the combination of causal and teleological modes of research; and (iv) the ability to function as a methodological boundary object. The contr…

Negocjacje w Unii Europejskiej na tle negocjacji międzynarodowych

2019

Negotiating Ethics-in-Action in a Long-term Research Relationship with a Young Child

2021

AbstractThis article continues the discussions of relational ethics put forward in Human Arenas in “Arena of Ethics” (Hilppö et al., 2019). Our aim in this article is to explore and discuss relational ethics, as ethics-in-action, in a long-term research relationship with a child. Our question is: How is ethics-in-action negotiated during critical incidents in the construction of a research space that involves a long-term research relationship with a young child? This article is based on a research project that focused on children’s transitions in early childhood education and care (ECEC). These transitions include the transition from home care to ECEC as well as transitions from child group…

Documenting Napping: The Agentic Force of Documents and Human Action

2015

The article examines the question of the agentic force of documents in institutional practices and proposes a conceptual model of the agentic relation between documentation and human actors. For this aim, it presents an empirical case study of Finnish early childhood education and care. The study deals with individual education plans (IEPs), which are an example of child documentation that aims at an individualised and participatory pedagogy. The analytical focus is on a single topic of an IEP, the child’s afternoon naps, and how these are negotiated in the three-party encounter between a parent, a practitioner and the IEP document. The theoretical framework draws on the theories of documen…

Strategic Accounting Choice Around Firm-Level Labor Negotiations

2014

Prior literature argues that managers make opportunistic income-decreasing accounting choices to limit the concessions made to trade unions. However, empirical research to date presents mixed evidence, potentially due to a common theoretical approach that views labor bargaining as a one-shot game in nature. Using a sample of U.S. firms that engage in firm-level labor collective agreement negotiations, we study whether managers act strategically to reduce the transfer of wealth to employees, and its consequences over investment efficiency. We expect that the repeated nature of this negotiation leads to cooperation among the parties and limits the incentives for earnings manipulation, partic…

Regional Tourism Development in Romania – Consistency with Policies and Strategies Developed at EU Level

2013

Abstract The national tourism development master plan for the period 2007-2026 focuses on tourism resources of the regions. The regional tourism development strategy should have the opportunities and threats that are found in every county of the region as guide marks. Their identification leads to facilitate the implementation of tourism development strategy, the opportunity maximum use being the revival and growth ramp of tourist activities, preventing threats ensure the proper functioning of the implementation process. In this paper we analyzed a series of indicators of tourist movement in the eight development regions of Romania.

Shallow and Deep Integration

2021

The concepts of shallow and deep economic integration are introduced and discussed as to their pertinence. The conflicting results of successive rounds of global trade negotiations for developing and least developed countries are examined in the context of deep integration attempts in North-South agreements. It is established as a guiding principle that North-South agreements should normally not go deeper or run faster than South-South agreements. In light of observed global trends, upcoming inter-regional trade deals will differ from current preferential North-South trade agreements, and Northern partners will be adamant that future agreements should go deep, as the chapter critically disc…

On the African Continental Free Trade Area

2021

Africa-wide integration projects have competed with step-wise regional integration since independence. This chapter examines the new project of an African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The project’s potential to become an economic game-changer for Africa is analysed alongside the likely pitfalls of the arrangement. We conclude that while a well-staged AfCFTA can resolve a number of critical issues associated with intra-African integration, it cannot replace existing RECs, especially not with respect to negotiating extra-regional trade agreements. It is argued that to avoid undercutting the entire process, the entrenched logic of exceptions and exclusions from tariff liberalization m…

Scope of Negative Integration: A Comparative Analysis of Post, Public Transport and Port Services

2014

There is extensive literature that explains how liberalization policy deepens and widens. In the literature of European integration such reform is commonly considered to be the result of a bias towards liberalization in the treaties, thereby giving the European Commission and the European Court of Justice wide-ranging leverage to enforce such reform. However, such approaches have been criticized for being de-politicized – for failing to understand the conflicts inherent in controversial policies. It is therefore of interest to explore the scope conditions of this constitutional bias assumption in areas where liberalization policy is disputed. This article analyzes the EU decision-making pro…

The Consistency of Fairness Rules: An Experimental Study

2010

In the last two decades, experimental papers on distributive justice have abounded. Two main results have been replicated. Firstly, there is a multiplicity of fairness rules. Secondly, fairness decisions differ depending on the context. This paper studies individual consistency in the use of fairness rules, as well as the structural factors that lead people to be inconsistent. We use a within-subject design, which allows us to compare individual behavior when the context changes. In line with the literature, we find a multiplicity of fairness rules. However, when we control for consistency, the set of fairness rules is considerably smaller. Only selfishness and strict egalitarianism seem to…
