NEMATODE COLONIZATION OF PYRITE CINDER-POLLUTED SOIL

2020

The nematofauna was studied in the early stages of a remediation trial at an industrial site where pyrite cinders had accumulated for 40 years in a large area and were then covered with mineral soil. The cinders were contaminated with several metals and metalloids. The soil of the experimental plots was derived from the mixture of cinders with the covering soil in a 1:1 ratio. Plots were amended with manure and sown with 3 metal resistant plants: Sorghum bicolor L., Helianthus annuus L., and Arundo donax L. Samples were taken : a) at the beginning of the trial on the pyrite cinders and covering soil, separately; b) from the mixture before the application of manure; c) from cultivated plots.…

Interactions between enchytraeid (Cognettia sphagnetorum), microarthropod and nematode populations in forest soil at different moistures

1998

Abstract Very little is known about the effects of microclimatic conditions on interactions within soil faunal communities. The aim of the experiment was to examine how the different functional components of the faunal community in coniferous forest soil affect each other at different moisture levels. Forest humus was defaunated by heating, adjusted to three water contents, distributed into glass jars and reinoculated with microflora and microfauna. Sets of 10 jars were inoculated with (1) Cognettia sphagnetorum, (2) Cognettia with Folsomia candida (Collembola), (3) Cognettia with a mixed community of microarthropods, (4) Folsomia alone, (5) mixed microarthropods alone, and (6) Cognettia wi…

2020

Darbā kalibrēta vienkārša, kvantitatīva metode entomopatogēno nematožu Steinernema feltiae (Filipiev, 1934) sastopamības novērtēšanai izmantojot Galleria mellonella (Linnaeus, 1758) kāpurus kā ēsmu. G. mellonella ēsmas tests tika kalibrēts divu dažāda vecuma sterilizētas kokosa šķiedras substrātā, kur tika konstatēta būtiska korelācija starp S. feltiae indivīdu blīvumu un G. mellonella mirstību 48h laikā gan svaigā (p<0.01, r=0.86, n=25), gan trīs gadus lietotajā (p<0.01, r=0.85, n=25) substrātā. Piecu nedēļu laikā dažāda vecuma rožu stādījumos ievāktos paraugos reģistrētas atšķirības pētījumā iesaistīto taksonu sastāvā, konstatēta S. feltiae telpiskās izplatības heterogenitāte, ilgstoša sa…

Endoparasites of the blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou from north-west Spain.

2005

AbstractThe communities of metazoan endoparasites of blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, in waters of north-west Spain were analysed and a geographical comparison made with other localities. Four hundred blue whiting collected in July 1999 and September 2000 were examined for parasites, excluding the head and gills. Six species were found: Anisakis simplex s.l. (L3), A. physeteris (L3), Hysterothylacium aduncum (L2 and L3), Stephanostomum lophii (metacercaria), S. pristis (adult), and Prosorhynchus crucibulum (metacercaria). The latter is a new host record, and A. physeteris is reported for the first time in blue whiting from the north-east Atlantic. Host gender was not a significant pr…

Sustainable Weed, Disease and Pest Management in Medicinal and Aromatic Plants

2015

As for all other crops, in MAPs as well, weeds, diseases and pests are important yield-reducing factors, which may severely curtain biomass production and, that is maybe more important, may affect several qualitative aspects of production. Research about this topic is generally lacking, for two main reasons: the first is that MAPs are generally grown on rather limited areas, and the incidence of specific pests and diseases rarely takes a relevance outside rather narrow boundaries. The second reason is that the economical importance of MAPs is much lower than that ascribed to the “major” crops, which the bigger efforts of research are addressed to. In the changing scenario of latter years, h…

Biological Responses of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) to Steinernema carpocapsae (Nemat…

2013

Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier 1790) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is becoming a serious problem in Mediterranean areas where it is well-adapted, and now is present even in the United States (California). The infestations are primarily in urban areas where chemical control is not advisable and million of Euros are spent to control it. The effects of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae (Nematoda: Steinernematidae) on mortality, growth, as well as the immune activity of R. ferrugineus larvae, were investigated. R. ferrugineus mortality exhibited a positive trend with the dosage and duration of exposure to S. carpocapsae. The median lethal dose and median lethal time, impor…

Sex-specific impact of inbreeding on pathogen load in the striped dolphin.

2020

The impact of inbreeding on fitness has been widely studied and provides consequential inference about adaptive potential and the impact on survival for reduced and fragmented natural populations. Correlations between heterozygosity and fitness are common in the literature, but they rarely inform about the likely mechanisms. Here, we investigate a pathology with a clear impact on health in striped dolphin hosts (a nematode infection that compromises lung function). Dolphins varied with respect to their parasite burden of this highly pathogenic lung nematode (Skrjabinalius guevarai). Genetic diversity revealed by high-resolution restriction-associated DNA (43 018 RADseq single nucleotide pol…

Intraperitoneal administration of the anti-IL-23 antibody prevents the establishment of intestinal nematodes in mice

2018

AbstractPrevious studies have established that an increased Th-9 response creates a hostile environment for nematode parasites. Given that IL-23, a cytokine required for maintenance of the IL-17–secreting phenotype, has inhibitory effects on IL-9 production, we hypothesized that reducing circulating IL-23 by treatment with anti-IL-23 antibodies would reduce the establishment and development of parasitic intestinal nematodes. In this study, we show that animals treated with anti-IL-23 monoclonal antibodies showed a drastic reduction in the number of mouse pinworms (Aspiculuris tetraptera) recovered from the intestine (p < 0.001) at 23 days post-infection compared to the untreated animals.…

The importance of integrative approaches in nematode taxonomy: the validity of Parapharyngodon and Thelandros as distinct genera

2018

AbstractDespite the advances of molecular tools, new nematode species are still described mainly based on morphological characters. Parapharyngodon and Thelandros are two genera of oxyurids with unclear related taxonomic histories. Here we use morphological characters (linear measurements and categorical variables) and genetic information (18S rRNA, 28S rRNA and COI partial gene sequences) to confirm the relationships between representatives of these two genera and to determine whether they can be discriminated morphologically. Genetic results confirm the existence of two main clades, mostly congruent with Parapharyngodon and Thelandros genera but with several discordances. Thelandros is po…
