Introduction: Clinical simulation is a tool that allows creating controlled and safe spaces that mimic reality, where students can acquire skills and abilities prior to facing real situations. Methodology: This is a study with two phases. The first quasi-experimental phase where 3 questionnaires were used; two of them to assess knowledge (pretest - posttest) and the other one to assess the satisfaction of the training action. Background The communicative meaning of human areolae for newborn infants was examined here in directly exposing 3-day old neonates to the secretion from the areolar glands of Montgomery donated by non related, non familiar lactating women. Methodology/Principal Findings The effect of the areolar stimulus on the infants' behavior and autonomic nervous system was compared to that of seven reference stimuli originating either from human or non human mammalian sources, or from an arbitrarily-chosen artificial odorant. In a prospective, randomized, blinded trial we have studied the effects of resuscitation upon oxygenation in a group of asphyxiated newly born infants receiving room air or 100% oxygen as the gas source. During the acute phase of asphyxia and until the resuscitation procedure concluded, we determined serial blood gases as well as reduced and oxidized glutathione, enzymes involved in the glutathione redox cycle, and antioxidant enzyme activities. The use of 100% oxygen caused a remarkable increase of partial pressures of oxygen in arterial blood, with values that were frequently above physiological levels (>100 mm Hg). Mammal fetal life elapses in a low oxygen environment relative to the extra uterine. Interestingly, in the human being partial pressure of oxygen increases from fetal 3.3 kPa (25–30 mmHg) to 10.5 kPa (75–85 mmHg) in the first minutes after birth in the newly born infant. This rapid and brisk increase in oxygen availability to tissue generates a physiologic oxidative stress. However, both the lungs and the antioxidant defense system do not mature until late in gestation. Therefore, preterm infants often need respiratory support and oxygen supplementation in the delivery room to achieve postnatal stabilization.
