BACKGROUND The majority of patients with breast carcinoma with ≥ 10 metastatic axillary lymph nodes (ALNs) develop recurrent disease within 5 years from diagnosis. The purpose of the current study, performed retrospectively, was to characterize the natural history of this subset of patients, both before and after the advent of adjuvant anthracycline-based chemotherapy and tamoxifen. Report from European Association for the Study of the Liver: HCC Summit, Geneva, Switzerland, 2-5 February 2017.

The European Association for the Study of the Liver Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) international meeting held in Geneva in February 2017 focused on the state of the art of HCC management, from diagnosis to treatment and the potential development of clinical research in this field. This report reviews some of the most interesting topics discussed at the meeting such as the role of hepatitis C viral infection treatment with direct-acting antivirals in enhancing HCC risk, current prognostic systems, early diagnosis techniques, curative therapies for early HCC and the systemic treatments for advanced disease with a look into future perspectives.

Patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have historically had few options and faced extremely poor prognoses if their disease progressed after standard-of-care tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Recently, the standard of care for HCC has been transformed as a combination of the immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) atezolizumab plus the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibody bevacizumab was shown to offer improved overall survival in the first-line setting. The glucocorticoid dexamethasone is frequently used as co-treatment in cytotoxic cancer therapy, e.g. to prevent nausea, to protect normal tissue or for other reasons. While the potent pro-apoptotic properties and the supportive effects of glucocorticoids to tumour therapy in lymphoid cells are well studied, the impact to cytotoxic treatment of colorectal and hepatocellular carcinoma is unknown. Low molecular weight heparins as antineoplastic agents.

There is an increasing interest in the potential role of low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) in the management of cancer patients. These antithrombotic agents have generated particular excitement because they have been proved useful in both the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with malignancy. Recent reports are, at the same time, highlighting a potential role of LMWHs on patient survival due to their presumed antineoplastic action. This review will discuss the most recent reports and patents on these topics.

Interferon-alpha combined with cytarabine in chronic myelogenous leukemia - clinical benefits.

During the last decade, several studies have evaluated the treatment of chronic phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) with a combination of interferon (IFN)-alpha and low- dose cytarabine (Ara-C). This combination therapy has been shown to be superior compared to monotherapy with IFN-alpha in randomized studies with regard to hematologic and cytogenetic remissions. However, the survival benefit is small, and the toxicity of the combination therapy is high. This paper reviews the published studies on IFN-alpha/low-dose Ara-C for the treatment of chronic phase CML and discusses the value of the combination therapy.
