Effectiveness and safety of once-daily aminoglycosides: A meta-analysis
1996
The effectiveness and safety of once-daily versus several-times-daily aminoglycosides were studied in a meta-analysis. MEDLINE for 1988 to 1995 was searched, and additional studies were identified from review articles and references in retrieved articles. Studies selected for meta-analysis were randomized controlled clinical trials in nonneutropenic adult patients comparing the clinical effectiveness or nephrotoxicity or ototoxicity of once-daily with several-times-daily aminoglycosides. Differences between groups were expressed as odds ratios. The results were combined by the procedure of Mantel and Haenszel, and 95% confidence intervals and exact confidence intervals were computed. An odd…
Serial measurements of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) in healthy newborns and in newborns with perinatal infection.
1993
Detection of hearing impairment in early childhood is difficult. We serially recorded transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) to search for signs of ototoxicity in term, healthy newborns and compared the results to a second group of term babies treated for perinatally acquired bacterial infection with ampicillin plus either cefotaxime or plus aminoglycoside. At initial evaluation, in the group of 45 healthy children born at term, well reproducible emissions were observed in all but two children. In each of these two, initially well reproducible TEOAEs were detected in one ear only. At the time of the second recording (mean at day 8.5) excellent emissions were seen in all ears of all…
Polyhydroxyethylaspartamide-based micelles for ocular drug delivery
2009
In this paper three copolymers of polyhydroxyethylaspartamide (PHEA), bearing in the side chains polyethylene glycol (PEG) and/or hexadecylamine (C(16)) (PHEA-PEG, PHEA-PEG-C(16) and PHEA-C(16) respectively) have been studied as potential colloidal drug carriers for ocular drug delivery. The physical characterization of all three PHEA derivatives, using the Langmuir trough (LT) and micellar affinity capillary electrophoresis (MACE) techniques allowed to assume that whereas alone PHEA backbone is an inert polymer with respect to the interactions with lipid membranes and drug complexation, when PHEA chains are grafted with long alkyl chains like C(16) or in combination C(16) chains and hydrop…
