Analysing the mediating role of a network: a Bayesian latent space approach
2020
The use of network analysis for the investigation of social structures has recently seen a rise, due both to the high availability of data and to the numerous insights it can provide into different fields. Most analyses focus on the topological characteristics of networks and the estimation of relationships between the nodes. We adopt a different point of view, by considering the whole network as a random variable conveying the effect of an exposure on a response. This point of view represents a classical mediation setting, where the interest lies in the estimation of the indirect effect, that is, the effect propagated through the mediating variable. We introduce a latent space model mappin…
Exploiting Deductive Processes for Automated Network Management
2005
This paper focuses on improving network management by the adoption of artificial intelligence techniques. We propose a distributed multiagent architecture for network management, which exploits the dynamic reasoning capabilities of the situation calculus in order to emulate the reactive behavior of a human expert to fault situations. The information related to network events is generated by programmable sensors deployed on the network devices and is collected by a logical entity for network managing where it is merged with general domain knowledge, with a view to identifying the root causes of faults and to decide on reparative actions. The logical inference system has been devised to carry…
Metacognition and emotion regulation as treatment targets in binge eating disorder: a network analysis study
2021
Abstract Background This study aims to examine the underlying associations between eating, affective and metacognitive symptoms in patients with binge eating disorder (BED) through network analysis (NA) in order to identify key variables that may be considered the target for psychotherapeutic interventions. Methods A total of 155 patients with BED completed measures of eating psychopathology, affective symptoms, emotion regulation and metacognition. A cross-sectional network was inferred by means of Gaussian Markov random field estimation using graphical LASSO and the extended Bayesian information criterion (EBIC-LASSO), and central symptoms of BED were identified by means of the strength c…
The spanning tree based approach for solving the shortest path problem in social graphs
2016
This thesis is devoted to the shortest path problem in social graphs. Social graphs represent individuals and social relationships between them. As for social networking sites, their users are represented as vertices of the social graph, and the relationship which indicates whether two users are friends in the social networking site are represented as edges of the social graph. Therefore, social graphs are widely investigated by sociologists in order to determine rules and properties of various social processes. Analysis of such social graphs may be used in prediction of results of election, or recommendation systems. Calculation of many social graph metrics requires computation of shortest…
Network Overlap and Network Blurring in Online Social Networks
2016
Online communities and the online social networks embedded become a prominent medium for social interactions. The success of social media depends on usersâ willingness to continue investing their time and efforts in the absence of economic rewards, making psychological attachment critical to online communities. While prior studies identify that members do develop psychological commitment to online communities, why and how the commitment arises remain underexplored. This study focuses on the relationship between network overlap, a common feature of online social networks, and affective commitment to an online community. Drawing on the commitment theory and social network boundary theory, w…
Estrategias basadas en análisis de redes sociales para optimizar el clima de aprendizaje en la universidad
2021
The aim of this study was to detect leaders among a group of university students based on their centrality scores and, from these scores, to distribute roles to help enhance learning climate. We understood that learning climate improved when the construction of networked knowledge was stimulated from the perspective of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning. We conducted the educational experiment in a virtual environment. An online discussion forum was set up in a loo- sely structured format, and the students’ centrality scores were calculated from the social network they generated in the forum. Our findings show that student connectivity increased significantly and that several leaders…
Explicit relationships for optimal designing rectangular microirrigation units on uniform slopes: The IRRILAB software application
2018
Abstract Many attempts have been made to provide easy tools for designing microirrigation units. However, most of these have dealt with numerical solutions, which require many trial-and-error attempts and time-consuming iterations, performed by applying the basic hydraulic equations from the manifold to the end of both the downhill and the uphill sides of the laterals. Recently, analytical procedures to optimally design paired drip laterals on uniform slopes were proposed, providing readily obtainable results and energy saving. Although these analytical solutions can be practically applied, they only make it possible to design a one-lateral unit; to be really interesting for practical appli…
Application of circuit theory for extraction of water from oil
2011
This paper discusses optimization of the performance of a pulsed dc electrostatic coalescer, a device that is used in the oil industry to increase the speed of separation of water from a water-in-oil emulsion. A previously found criterion for optimum performance, the charge hypothesis, is reviewed. Analysis by circuit theory shows that the performance may be improved through selecting an optimum switching frequency and duty ratio, improving the design of the pulse train generator, and making physical modifications to the coalescer apparatus. The addition of an external charging circuit is beneficial. Experiments on the modified system could contribute to a better understanding of the physic…
Wikipedia network analysis of cancer interactions and world influence
2019
AbstractWe apply the Google matrix algorithms for analysis of interactions and influence of 37 cancer types, 203 cancer drugs and 195 world countries using the network of 5 416 537 English Wikipedia articles with all their directed hyperlinks. The PageRank algorithm provides the importance order of cancers which has 60% and 70% overlaps with the top 10 cancers extracted from World Health Organization GLOBOCAN 2018 and Global Burden of Diseases Study 2017, respectively. The recently developed reduced Google matrix algorithm gives networks of interactions between cancers, drugs and countries taking into account all direct and indirect links between these selected 435 entities. These reduced n…
