Network measures in animal social network analysis : Their strengths, limits, interpretations and uses

2020

International audience; We provide an overview of the most commonly used social network measures in animal research for static networks or time‐aggregated networks. For each of these measures, we provide clear explanations as to what they measure, we describe their respective variants, we underline the necessity to consider these variants according to the research question addressed, and we indicate considerations that have not been taken so far. We provide a guideline indicating how to use them depending on the data collection protocol, the social system studied and the research question addressed. Finally, we inform about the existent gaps and remaining challenges in the use of several va…

Least-squares community extraction in feature-rich networks using similarity data

2021

We explore a doubly-greedy approach to the issue of community detection in feature-rich networks. According to this approach, both the network and feature data are straightforwardly recovered from the underlying unknown non-overlapping communities, supplied with a center in the feature space and intensity weight(s) over the network each. Our least-squares additive criterion allows us to search for communities one-by-one and to find each community by adding entities one by one. A focus of this paper is that the feature-space data part is converted into a similarity matrix format. The similarity/link values can be used in either of two modes: (a) as measured in the same scale so that one may …

MetNet: A two-level approach to reconstructing and comparing metabolic networks

2021

Metabolic pathway comparison and interaction between different species can detect important information for drug engineering and medical science. In the literature, proposals for reconstructing and comparing metabolic networks present two main problems: network reconstruction requires usually human intervention to integrate information from different sources and, in metabolic comparison, the size of the networks leads to a challenging computational problem. We propose to automatically reconstruct a metabolic network on the basis of KEGG database information. Our proposal relies on a two-level representation of the huge metabolic network: the first level is graph-based and depicts pathways a…

Small worlds with a difference

2011

Political discussions on social network platforms represent an increasingly relevant source of political information, an opportunity for the exchange of opinions and a popular source of quotes for media outlets. We analyzed political communication on Twitter during the run-up to the German general election of 2009 by extracting a directed network of user interactions based on the exchange of political information and opinions. In consonance with expectations from previous research, the resulting network exhibits small-world properties, lending itself to fast and efficient information diffusion. We go on to demonstrate that precisely the highly connected nodes, characteristic for small-world…

Circuit simulators for circuit analysis in graduate engineering courses

2018

Circuit simulators are extensively used as an aid in many courses at the graduate level in many different engineering and applied sciences programs. SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuits Emphasis) based software programs have been used for long due to their traditional market position. If we focus on circuits analysis and linear systems subjects, the features that are required from a given simulator can be found in student/limited versions of commercial EDA (Electronic Design Automation) suites or in freeware/open source codes. In this contribution, we analyse and compare the most revelant characteristics of a representative set of the software packages that are commonly adopte…

Social Interaction Technologies

2010

This chapter explores a relationship between social interaction technologies (SIT) and guanxi, a major Chinese informal style of networking, in the context of the careers of women managers in the information technology (IT) field in China. Addressing women’s under-representation in non-traditional occupations (such as IT), prior research has established that networking, especially informal, is an important career management tool for women. Recent advances in social capital theory and social network analysis provide a framework for understanding the role of social processes in achieving career success. Today, the growing web-based social and professional networking in China weighs against th…

Connected-component identification and cluster update on graphics processing units.

2011

Cluster identification tasks occur in a multitude of contexts in physics and engineering such as, for instance, cluster algorithms for simulating spin models, percolation simulations, segmentation problems in image processing, or network analysis. While it has been shown that graphics processing units (GPUs) can result in speedups of two to three orders of magnitude as compared to serial codes on CPUs for the case of local and thus naturally parallelized problems such as single-spin flip update simulations of spin models, the situation is considerably more complicated for the nonlocal problem of cluster or connected component identification. I discuss the suitability of different approaches…

Criticality in the Network with Imprecise Activity Times

2002

A review of the results obtained in the area of fuzzy network analysis is presented. The main approaches to the concept of criticality in a network with fuzzy activity times are described and classified. Against the background of this review some new results, obtained by the authors recently, are presented. The paper is an extended version of the work presented in IPMU'2000 (see [8]).

Complexity traits and synchrony of cryptocurrencies price dynamics

2021

AbstractIn this study, we characterized the dynamics and analyzed the degree of synchronization of the time series of daily closing prices and volumes in US$ of three cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin, over the period September 1,2015–March 31, 2020. Time series were first mapped into a complex network by the horizontal visibility algorithm in order to revel the structure of their temporal characters and dynamics. Then, the synchrony of the time series was investigated to determine the possibility that the cryptocurrencies under study co-bubble simultaneously. Findings reveal similar complex structures for the three virtual currencies in terms of number and internal composit…

Selecting and Retaining Friends on the Basis of Cigarette Smoking Similarity

2013

This study examines whether friend selection, deselection, and socialization differ as a function of the level of cigarette smoking in the friendship group. A total of 1419 students (median age = 16) from upper secondary and vocational schools in Finland were included as targets in the peer network. Targets in the peer network were asked to nominate friends and describe their own cigarette smoking at two time points one year apart. Network analyses revealed similarity arising from selection and deselection on the basis of smoking. Selection effects (i.e., selecting new friends based on similarity) were stronger for adolescents in low-smoking groups. Deselection effects (i.e., dropping frien…
