Diversity and complexity of microbial communities from a chlor-alkali tailings dump

2015

Abstract Revegetation of the tailings dumps produced by various industrial activities is necessary to prevent dust storms and erosion and represents a great challenge for ecological restoration. Little is known about the microbial colonisation and community structure of revegetated tailings following site exploitation. Here, we report the sequencing of 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) fungal RNA gene amplicons from chlor-alkali residue and from an adjacent undisturbed soil to define the composition and assembly of the rhizosphere microbial communities. After quality filtering, a total of 72,373 and 89,929 bacterial sequences and 122,618 and 111,209 fungal sequences remained fo…

Improving IEEE 802.11 Performance in Chain Topologies through Distributed Polling and Network Coding

2009

Wireless multi-hop networks often rely on the use of IEEE 802.11 technology. Despite of the robustness of the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) for working in various network scenarios, it has been proven that critical inefficiencies can arise in the case of multi-hop packet forwarding. In this paper, we propose a MAC scheme, based on the virtualization of the Point Coordination Function, optimized for working on chain topologies with bidirectional traffic flows. Our scheme is based on a token-like access mechanism coupled with network coding. The basic idea is the use of multiple Point Coordinators (PCs) along the node chain, which are elected by passing special token fra…

Preliminary test on a cascode switch for high-frequency applications

2020

Nowadays, an increasing electrification level is being addressed towards different sectors, such as transportation and industrial electronics. To bear that, high speed electrical machines represent a mature technology in different application fields, e.g. avionics, automotive, compressors and spindles. In order to guarantee high speed while keeping high power quality without adopting bulky filtering circuits, DC-AC converters shall be controlled by means of high Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) frequencies. In addition to the emerging switching device technologies, such as those based on Silicon-Carbide (SiC) and Gallium-Nitride (GaN), alternative circuital topologies are crucial in order to co…

Joint routing and per-flow fairness in wireless multihop networks

2008

In wireless multihop networks communication between two end-nodes is carried out by hopping over multiple short wireless links. Traditional CSMA/CA based media access control does not work satisfactory in a multihop scenario, since an intended target of a communication may be subject to mutual interference imposed by concurrent transmissions from nodes which cannot directly sense each other, causing unfair throughput allocation. Although TDMA seems to be a more promising solution, careful transmission scheduling is needed in order to achieve error-free communication and fairness. In our previous work, a TDMA scheduling algorithm has been proposed that schedules the transmissions in a fair m…

Implementation of a PLC Field Analyzer on a G3 Modem Platform

2021

Nowadays, power line communications (PLC) are a widely used technology in distribution grids, both for automatic meter reading and automation applications. PLC performances (in terms of capacity, coverage, robustness, and data transmission rate) can be significantly affected by electrical network topologies, connected loads and disturbances. Thus, utilities and modem manufacturers are increasing their interest in electrical network characterization. In this framework, a software tool is proposed in this paper to measure received signal and noise levels. As case study, it is implemented on a G3 PLC transceiver, widely used for smart metering purposes. In this way, a PLC channel characterizat…

Inference of Spatiotemporal Processes over Graphs via Kernel Kriged Kalman Filtering

2018

Inference of space-time signals evolving over graphs emerges naturally in a number of network science related applications. A frequently encountered challenge pertains to reconstructing such dynamic processes given their values over a subset of vertices and time instants. The present paper develops a graph-aware kernel-based kriged Kalman filtering approach that leverages the spatio-temporal dynamics to allow for efficient online reconstruction, while also coping with dynamically evolving network topologies. Laplacian kernels are employed to perform kriging over the graph when spatial second-order statistics are unknown, as is often the case. Numerical tests with synthetic and real data ill…

Stochastic Graph Filtering Under Asymmetric Links in Wireless Sensor Networks

2018

Wireless sensor networks (WSN s) are often characterized by random and asymmetric packet losses due to the wireless medium, leading to network topologies that can be modeled as random, time-varying and directed graphs. Most of existing works related to graph filtering in the context of WSNs assume that the probability of delivering an information from one node to a neighbor node is the same as in the reverse direction. This assumption is not realistic due to the typical link asymmetry in WSNs caused by interferences and background noise. In this work, we analyze the problem of applying stochastic graph filtering over random time-varying asymmetric network topologies. We show that it is poss…

Information Transfer in Linear Multivariate Processes Assessed through Penalized Regression Techniques: Validation and Application to Physiological N…

2020

The framework of information dynamics allows the dissection of the information processed in a network of multiple interacting dynamical systems into meaningful elements of computation that quantify the information generated in a target system, stored in it, transferred to it from one or more source systems, and modified in a synergistic or redundant way. The concepts of information transfer and modification have been recently formulated in the context of linear parametric modeling of vector stochastic processes, linking them to the notion of Granger causality and providing efficient tools for their computation based on the state&ndash

Reliability Analysis of Three Homogeneous Fault-tolerant Inverter Topologies

2016

Abstract—In this article, non-redundant fault-tolerant inverter topologies are addressed. A novel fault-tolerant control strategy which enhances performances during post-fault operation is proposed. Benefits from the proposed strategy over conventional fault-tolerant topologies are investigated in terms of system reliability. Cost, post-fault performances, and system reliability of the proposed solution are compared with both a conventional triac-based fault-tolerant inverter and a T-type inverter. The reliability analysis of each selected configuration is carried out by means of Markov chains. The analysis is validated through a comparison of reliability and sensitivity curves. As shown by…
