Strategic alignment of business network forms and single companies’ objectives

2009

In this paper the most significant theories on firm networking are reviewed and an innovative strategic perspective that underlies at firm network organization is proposed. It is argued that networks are differently organized according to three basic strategic objectives: gaining efficiency, collecting knowledge, pursuing globalization. The research is supported by secondary data analysis based on a sample of about 115 case studies published in different journals and magazines.

Building interpersonal trust in business networks: enablers and roadblocks

2019

Purpose - This study examines how interpersonal trust forms in business networks and anchors relationships. Trust can be seen as a required factor and enabler for co-creation that is needed when business models are created. This study draws on empirical data from a case study of a Finnish business network in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. It seeks to answer the research question: How does interpersonal trust start to develop at the business network level and how it can be supported? Design/ methodology/approach – This article draws on a case study of a Finnish business network which was developed through theme interviews and observation conducted in 2012. Findings - The findi…

Fast 3D Ray Tracing for Indoor Coverage Solutions

2016

Optimal wireless indoor network planning requires huge number of iterations and evaluations of indoor coverage for each antenna location until an optimal solution is reached. Consequently, accurate and scalable calculation of power strength for indoor scenarios becomes necessary. The contribution in this paper is to reduce the complexity of 3D ray tracing for deterministic indoor power prediction. In order to achieve that while preserving the accuracy, image theory with feasible reflection volume as preprocessing approach is introduced. This proposed algorithm stores the image, its feasible reflection volume and valid area of receiving points. Significant complexity reduction is achieved by…

Learning-based multiresolution transforms with application to image compression

2013

In Harten's framework, multiresolution transforms are defined by predicting finer resolution levels of information from coarser ones using an operator, called prediction operator, and defining details (or wavelet coefficients) that are the difference between the exact and predicted values. In this paper we use tools of statistical learning in order to design a more accurate prediction operator in this framework based on a training sample, resulting in multiresolution decompositions with enhanced sparsity. In the case of images, we incorporate edge detection techniques in the design of the prediction operator in order to avoid Gibbs phenomenon. Numerical tests are presented showing that the …

Improving IEEE 802.11 Performance in Chain Topologies through Distributed Polling and Network Coding

2009

Wireless multi-hop networks often rely on the use of IEEE 802.11 technology. Despite of the robustness of the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) for working in various network scenarios, it has been proven that critical inefficiencies can arise in the case of multi-hop packet forwarding. In this paper, we propose a MAC scheme, based on the virtualization of the Point Coordination Function, optimized for working on chain topologies with bidirectional traffic flows. Our scheme is based on a token-like access mechanism coupled with network coding. The basic idea is the use of multiple Point Coordinators (PCs) along the node chain, which are elected by passing special token fra…

Does News Frame Affect Free Movement Attitudes? A Comparative Analysis

2021

The policy of free movement—one of the core principles of the European Union—has become increasingly politicized. This makes it more important to understand how attitudes toward free movement are shaped, and the role of the media. The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate how news frames affect attitudes toward free movement, and whether education moderates framing effects. The findings from a survey experiment conducted in seven European countries show that the effects are few and inconsistent across countries. This suggest that these attitudes are not easily shifted by exposure to a single news frame.

Mesh Visual Quality based on the combination of convolutional neural networks

2019

Blind quality assessment is a challenging issue since the evaluation is done without access to the reference nor any information about the distortion. In this work, we propose an objective blind method for the visual quality assessment of 3D meshes. The method estimates the perceived visual quality using only information from the distorted mesh to feed pre-trained deep convolutional neural networks. The input data is prepared by rendering 2D views from the 3D mesh and the corresponding saliency map. The views are split into small patches of fixed size that are filtered using a saliency threshold. Only the salient patches are selected as input data. After that, three pre-trained deep convolu…
