A novel traffic splitting policy for performance improvement in wireless mesh networks

2009

Wireless mesh networks are expected to play an important role in the next-generation wireless communication systems as it can provide wide coverage and scalable broadband Internet access services. However, as more traffic is injected into the network it may lead to throughput degradation, packet loss and longer transmission delay. In this paper, we argue that network performance can be improved by cross-layer design over multiple layers and load balancing based on service types. Correspondingly, a novel traffic splitting policy which can potentially utilize diverse paths for transmitting traffic flows of different service types from the same router has been proposed and investigated. Such a…

A Secure Spontaneous Ad-Hoc Network to Share Internet Access

2009

In this paper, we propose a secure spontaneous ad-hoc network to grant the access of the users to surf the Web. The paper shows the description of our proposal, the procedure of the nodes involved in the system and the designed messages. We also validate the success of our proposal through several simulations and comparisons with a regular architecture. The proposal has been developed with the main objective of improving the communication and integration between different study centers of low resource communities.

Distance-related energy consumption analysis for mobile/relay stations in heterogeneous wireless networks

2010

While the availability of more than one mobile or wireless technologies is enhancing the ubiquity of the Internet access, the corresponding energy consumption effects on mobile station battery for connection selection has not been investigated in depth yet. In this paper, a heterogeneous wireless network, which consists of three constituent networks, is studied with respect to the amount of data communicated and the battery operation time. Four alternative hybrid paths for separate uplink and downlink traffic, each involving more than one network, are analyzed with respect to energy consumption aspects of the mobile (and relay) station. The energy in these paths is analyzed mainly by consid…

Granger Causality Analysis of Transient Calcium Dynamics in the Honey Bee Antennal Lobe Network

2023

Odorant processing presents multiple parallels across animal species, and insects became relevant models for the study of olfactory coding because of the tractability of the underlying neural circuits. Within the insect brain, odorants are received by olfactory sensory neurons and processed by the antennal lobe network. Such a network comprises multiple nodes, named glomeruli, that receive sensory information and are interconnected by local interneurons participating in shaping the neural representation of an odorant. The study of functional connectivity between the nodes of a sensory network in vivo is a challenging task that requires simultaneous recording from multiple nodes at high temp…

Optimal valves regulation for calibration of pipe networks models

1998

The calibration of a pipe network model is faced by means of a two-steps iterative procedure. The first step of the procedure is the estimation of the parameters in the network simulation model, obtained from a first set of water head measures. The second step of the procedure is the change of the resistances provided by the valves in the network and the acquisition of a new set of measures. The inverse problem is then solved again and the procedure is repeated, until the set of computed parameters converge to stable values. The new resistances are chosen to minimize the sum of the variation coefficients, computed from the Fisher information matrix. The effect of different correlation funct…

Correcting for the study bias associated with protein-protein interaction measurements reveals differences between protein degree distributions from …

2015

Protein–protein interaction (PPI) networks are associated with multiple types of biases partly rooted in technical limitations of the experimental techniques. Another source of bias are the different frequencies with which proteins have been studied for interaction partners. It is generally believed that proteins with a large number of interaction partners tend to be essential, evolutionarily conserved, and involved in disease. It has been repeatedly reported that proteins driving tumor formation have a higher number of PPI partners. However, it has been noticed before that the degree distribution of PPI networks is biased toward disease proteins, which tend to have been studied more often …

Genetic and Molecular Characterization of The Human Osteosarcoma 3AB-OS Cancer Stem Cell Line: A Possible Model For Studying Osteosarcoma Origin and …

2013

Finding new treatments targeting cancer stem cells (CSCs) within a tumor seems to be critical to halt cancer and improve patient survival. Osteosarcoma is an aggressive tumor affecting adolescents, for which there is no second-line chemotherapy. Uncovering new molecular mechanisms underlying the development of osteosarcoma and origin of CSCs is crucial to identify new possible therapeutic strategies. Here, we aimed to characterize genetically and molecularly the human osteosarcoma 3AB-OS CSC line, previously selected from MG63 cells and which proved to have both in vitro and in vivo features of CSCs. Classic cytogenetic studies demonstrated that 3AB-OS cells have hypertriploid karyotype wit…

Generalization of Linked Canonical Polyadic Tensor Decomposition for Group Analysis

2019

Real-world data are often linked with each other since they share some common characteristics. The mutual linking can be seen as a core driving force of group analysis. This study proposes a generalized linked canonical polyadic tensor decomposition (GLCPTD) model that is well suited to exploiting the linking nature in multi-block tensor analysis. To address GLCPTD model, an efficient algorithm based on hierarchical alternating least squa res (HALS) method is proposed, termed as GLCPTD-HALS algorithm. The proposed algorithm enables the simultaneous extraction of common components, individual components and core tensors from tensor blocks. Simulation experiments of synthetic EEG data analysi…

A hardware skin-segmentation IP for vision based smart ADAS through an FPGA prototyping

2017

International audience; In this paper we presents a platform based design approach for fast HW/SW embedded smart Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS) design and prototyping. Then, we share our experience in designing and prototyping a HW/SW vision based smart embedded system as an ADAS that helps to increase the safety of car's drivers. We present a physical prototype of the vision ADAS based on a Zynq FPGA. The system detects the fatigue state of the driver by monitoring the eyes closure and generates a real-time alert. A new HW/SW codesign skin segmentation step to locate the eyes/face is proposed. Our presented new approach migrates the skin segmentation step from processing system (S…

Black Bioinks from Superstructured Carbonized Lignin Particles

2023

A renewable source of carbon black is introduced by the processing of lignin from agro-forestry residues. Lignin side streams are converted into spherical particles by direct aerosolization followed by carbonization. The obtained submicron black carbon is combined with cellulose nanofibers, which act as a binder and rheology modifier, resulting in a new type of colloidal bioink. The bioinks are tested in handwriting and direct ink writing. After consolidation, the black bioinks display total light reflectance (%R) at least three times lower than commercial black inks (reduction from 12 to 4%R). A loading of up to 20% of nanofibers positively affects the cohesion of the dried bioink (1 to 16…
