Exploring learning analytics on YouTube: a tool to support students interactions analysis

2021

YouTube is a free online video-sharing platform that is often used by students for their learning activities. The interactions of the students when using the platform to shape new concepts, are worth to be investigated to better understand and to optimize the learning opportunities that take place in this platform. In this paper, we investigate which types of data are relevant to analyse the interactions of students with content on YouTube, and we introduce a new tool that emulates students’ interactions with the platform in order to provide data to be used in supporting Learning Analytics approaches. Our preliminary study inspects the tool effectiveness in data collection and analyses the …

Anagraphical relationships and crime specialization within Cosa Nostra

2021

Abstract The aim of the present work is to investigate the relationships established within Cosa Nostra, by making use of networks and complex-systems methods. The analysis is performed at three different levels, that is, individuals, groups within mafia syndicates, and relationships amongst mafia syndicates. The reported empirical analysis is based on the criminal records of 632 affiliates to Cosa Nostra selected from a set of 125 judgements emitted by the Palermo courts from 2000 to 2014. According to the criminal records of the Palermo Prosecutor Office, such a dataset includes approximately 10% of the whole population of Cosa Nostra affiliates in western Sicily. Furthermore, the vital s…

Principal Component and Neural Network Analyses of Face Images: What Can Be Generalized in Gender Classification?

1998

We present an overview of the major findings of the principal component analysis (pca) approach to facial analysis. In a neural network or connectionist framework, this approach is known as the linear autoassociator approach. Faces are represented as a weighted sum of macrofeatures (eigenvectors or eigenfaces) extracted from a cross-product matrix of face images. Using gender categorization as an illustration, we analyze the robustness of this type of facial representation. We show that eigenvectors representing general categorical information can be estimated using a very small set of faces and that the information they convey is generalizable to new faces of the same population and to a l…

DAE-GP

2020

Estimation of distribution genetic programming (EDA-GP) algorithms are metaheuristics where sampling new solutions from a learned probabilistic model replaces the standard mutation and recombination operators of genetic programming (GP). This paper presents DAE-GP, a new EDA-GP which uses denoising autoencoder long short-term memory networks (DAE-LSTMs) as probabilistic model. DAE-LSTMs are artificial neural networks that first learn the properties of a parent population by mapping promising candidate solutions to a latent space and reconstructing the candidate solutions from the latent space. The trained model is then used to sample new offspring solutions. We show on a generalization of t…

Emerging Trends, Issues, and Challenges in Big Data and Its Implementation toward Future Smart Cities

2017

The articles in this special section focus on Big Data as it impacts future smart cities. The world is experiencing a period of extreme urbanization. Moreover, this process will continue, and the global urban population is expected to double by 2050. Smart city has been proposed to improve the efficiency of services and meet residents’ needs for better quality of life. Essentially, smart city integrates the Internet of Things and emerging communication technologies such as fifth generation (5G) solutions to manage the citys’ assets, including transportation systems, hospitals, water supply networks, waste management, and so on. Therefore, smart city is driving innovation and new technologie…

Nonlinear Relaxation in Population Dynamics

2001

We analyze the nonlinear relaxation of a complex ecosystem composed of many interacting species. The ecological system is described by generalized Lotka-Volterra equations with a multiplicative noise. The transient dynamics is studied in the framework of the mean field theory and with random interaction between the species. We focus on the statistical properties of the asymptotic behaviour of the time integral of the i-th population and on the distribution of the population and of the local field.

A Neuro-Ethological Approach for the TSP: Changing Metaphors in Connectionist Models.

1994

Biological systems often offer solutions to difficult problems which are not only original but also efficient. Connectionist models have been inspired by neural systems and successfully applied to the formulation of algorithms for solving complex problems such as the travelling salesman problem. In this paper we extend the connectionist metaphor to include an ethological account of how problems similar to the travelling salesman problem are solved by real living systems. A model is presented in which a population of neural networks with simple sensory-motor systems evolve genetically in simulated environments which represent the problem instances to be solved. Preliminary results are discu…

Family networks and refugees’ health conditions. A picture from Italian informal settlements

2021

While the relationships between social networks and health are widely acknowledged in the literature, few of these studies have covered the population of refugees living in makeshift camps. In our analysis of a nationally representative Italian survey of individuals living in informal settlements, we find that many had weak family relations: only 10 per cent had one or more family members in their settlement. The paper analyses the effects of individual social network on two measures of health, and finds that the refugees’ health conditions were associated with both their personal characteristics and the characteristics of the settlement. The results show that more than 50 per cent of these…

Coauthorship networks and institutional collaboration patterns in reproductive biology.

2007

Objective Reproductive biology is a highly productive area. By analyzing papers published in the major journals in the period 2003–2005, the collaborative patterns were characterized. Design Original research papers published in 2004 in the journals included in the first quartile of the category "Reproductive Biology" of the Journal Citation Reports (2005) were selected. A bibliometric analysis was carried out with the information obtained, thus building up the networks of coauthorship and institutional collaboration. Result(s) A total of 4,702 papers were analyzed, 96.75% signed in collaboration by two or more authors, the authors per paper index being 5.24; 73.73% of the papers were colla…

Introduction to the 5th International Workshop on Intelligent Environments Supporting Healthcare and Well-Being (WISHWell13)

2013

This workshop is designed to bring together researchers from both industry and academia from the various disciplines to discuss how innovation in the use of technologies to support healthier lifestyles can be moved forward. There has been a growing interest around the world and especially in Europe, on investigating the potential consequences of introducing technology to deliver social and health care to citizens (see for example [1]). This implies an important shift on how social and health care are delivered and it has positive as well as negative consequences which must be investigated carefully. On the other hand there is an urgency provided by the changes in demographics which is putti…
