Endoscope-assisted microsurgery for tumors of the septum pellucidum: surgical considerations and benefits of the method in the treatment of four seri…

2003

Neoplasms that primarily originate from the septum pellucidum are extremely rare. Generally the septum pellucidum is involved in direct extension of tumors that arise from the neighboring structures, principally the corpus callosum. Endoscope-assisted techniques form a useful adjunct to common microsurgical procedures to completely remove intraventricular lesions. There are two main advantages of endoscope-assisted surgery over common microsurgical techniques: reduction of superficial brain retraction with less iatrogenic trauma to the neighboring structures and inspection of hidden corners depict simultaneously anatomical details which are not precisely visible in the zoomed and thus light…

A rare diagnosis of an extraventricular neurocytoma

2021

Background: Extraventricular neurocytoma (EVN) is an extremely rare neoplasm of the central nervous system. As reported, it arises in a variety of locations, but mainly within the cerebral hemispheres. Despite its histological similarity with central neurocytoma (CN), EVN occurs outside the ventricular system and, in 2007, was recognized by the World Health Organization as a separate entity. Case Description: A 39-year-old man, with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt inserted for communicating hydrocephalus, was admitted at our Unit of Neurosurgery with a 1-month history of gait disturbance, postural instability, speech disorders, and occasional incontinence. Computed tomography scan and magneti…

Pleomorphic pineocytoma with extensive neuronal differentiation: report of two cases

1994

Two pineal parenchymal tumors are presented, arising in a 54-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman; respectively. They showed isomorphic, cellular areas of small cells, often with characteristic pineocytomatous rosettes, and of medium-sized cells, as well as less cellular regions with highly pleomorphic, often ganglioid large cells. Immunohistochemistry disclosed extensive neuronal differentiation. There was intense positivity for neurofilament protein and microtubule-associated protein 2 in the pleomorphic areas and more variable expression in the isomorphic regions. Diffuse synaptophysin positivity was seen, accentuated along the borders of pleomorphic cells and in the rosettes, as well as…
