Emerging Therapeutic Strategies for Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury
2020
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a debilitating neurologic condition with tremendous socioeconomic impact on affected individuals and the health care system. The treatment of SCI principally includes surgical treatment and marginal pharmacologic and rehabilitation therapies targeting secondary events with minor clinical improvements. This unsuccessful result mainly reflects the complexity of SCI pathophysiology and the diverse biochemical and physiologic changes that occur in the injured spinal cord. Once the nervous system is injured, cascades of cellular and molecular events are triggered at varying times. Although the cascade of tissue reactions and cell injury develops over a period of days …
Neuropathological Alterations after Smoke Inhalation Injury, with and without Skin Burn
2020
More than 23,000 smoke inhalation injuries are reported in the United States each year. While the pathophysiology of smoke inhalation-induced lung injury is well studied, little is known about the acute effects of smoke inhalation on the central nervous system (CNS). Tragic events, such as those of the nightclub fire in Brazil in 2013, suggest that neurological complications occur following smoke inhalation injury, with the most commonly reported symptoms being a persistent headache, memory loss, and paresthesia. Additionally, one case report described that smoke inhalation alone was associated with progressive cognitive and psychiatric impairments, lasting for years after the initial injur…
The grant application by Nicolás Achúcarro and other unpublished documents on Achúcarro and Lafora in the archives of the Junta para la Ampliación de…
2023
Nicolás Achúcarro Lund (Bilbao, 1880-Guetxo, 1918) was probably one the most brilliant scientists of the now universally recognised Spanish Histological School. Despite his early death at the age of 37 years, his scientific production was very fruitful and of great neuroscientific relevance. His microscopy research marked the beginning of the outstanding work by his most important student, Pío del Río-Hortega. Both figures are unquestionably responsible for the most relevant neuropathological research conducted in Spain. The aim of the present study is to disseminate the document drafted by Achúcarro in August 1907, which was presented to the Council for Study Extensions and Scientific Rese…

Effects on intermittent postural control in people with Parkinson's due to a dual task.
2021
Objectives The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of performing a dual task on the sway density plot parameters in Parkinson's disease and control subjects. Methods A cross-sectional design was used to establish differences in the mean peak, mean time, and mean distance between a group with Parkinson's disease and a control group without Parkinson's disease. The subjects performed, in a unique measurement session, two trials under three different randomized conditions: i. eyes open, ii. eyes closed, and iii. Eyes open with foam base. One trial was performed as a single task (i.e., the subjects completed one of the balance test), while the other trial was performed as a du…
Relationship between deep and superficial sensitivity assessments and gait analysis in diabetic foot patients
2023
: Peripheral neuropathy is a prevalent complication of diabetes that can lead to gait impairment and its adverse consequences. This study explored the potential utility of different parameters of gait analysis using a single sensor unit as a simple tool to detect peripheral neuropathy in 85 diabetic patients (DP) with diabetic foot in whom different somato-sensitivity tests in the feet were performed. Gait spatiotemporal parameters were examined by sensor inertial measurement placed in the lumbar area, while the superficial sensitivity pathway was assessed by nociception tests and deep sensitivity was examined by light touch-pressure and vibration sensitivity tests. Correlations between eac…
Applying modern pain neuroscience in clinical practice: criteria for the classification of central sensitization pain
2014
Background: The awareness is growing that central sensitization is of prime importance for the assessment and management of chronic pain, but its classification is challenging clinically since no gold standard method of assessment exists. Objectives: Designing the first set of classification criteria for the classification of central sensitization pain. Methods: A body of evidence from original research papers was used by 18 pain experts from 7 different countries to design the first classification criteria for central sensitization pain. Results: It is proposed that the classification of central sensitization pain entails 2 major steps: the exclusion of neuropathic pain and the differentia…

Knowledge and Attitudes towards Palliative Care : Validation of the Spanish Version of Questionnaire on Palliative Care for Advanced Dementia
2022
Background: Palliative care is essential in the care of people with advanced dementia, due to the increasing number of patients requiring care in the final stages of life. Nurses need to acquire specific knowledge and skills to provide quality palliative care. The Questionnaire on Palliative Care for Advanced Dementia (qPAD) is useful for assessing knowledge and attitudes toward palliative care, but its adaptation to the Spanish language and analysis of its effectiveness and usefulness for the Spanish culture is lacking. Objective: To report on the Spanish language adaptation and psychometric analysis of the qPAD. Methods: The Questionnaire on Palliative Care for Advanced Dementia Spanish v…
