Postural and neuromuscular strategies during upright stance and hand standing

Effets aigus et chroniques de l’électrostimulation appliquée au niveau du nerf moteur : importance du retour afférent
2019
The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects of electrical stimulation protocols favouring an indirect motor units’ (MU) recruitment via sensory axons activation and giving rise to extra force development, on the neuromuscular system. These protocols use wide pulse duration, low stimulation intensity, low and high stimulation frequencies and are applied over the motor nerve. The aim of the first study was to examine the effects of these protocols on the extent and origin of neuromuscular fatigue during an acute application. Results showed that for a similar impact on maximal force generating capacity, low stimulation frequencies limit force decreases during the stimulation trains a…
Immediate effects of the respiratory stimulation on ventilation parameters in ischemic stroke survivors: A randomized interventional study (CONSORT).
2019
Background: Post-stroke brain damage, which affects the central control of respiration, leads to various respiratory disorders. They can be caused by the weakening of the respiratory muscles and chest movements, which can indirectly contribute to an impairment of the ventilation function. The aim of the study is an objective assessment of the effect of a single-session intervention of respiratory stimulation through Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) on chosen respiratory parameters and the following comparison of these changes with a group in which positioning was used (intra- and intergroup comparison). Methods: This was a randomized interventional study evaluating the respir…
Recent progress in understanding cholinergic function at the cellular and molecular levels
1992
Cholinergic transmission can claim to be the first form of chemical neurotransmission to be investigated by pharmacological and electrophysiological methods and the first in which both the transmitter and its receptor have been isolated and characterized. One reason for this is that neuromuscular transmission is cholinergic and the neuromuscular junction (especially that of frogs) is a readily investigated synapse in which responses are recorded by a muscular twitch — something which can be appreciated by direct observation and which does not require sophisticated equipment. Another is that in the form of the electric organs of strongly electric fish Nature has provided a tissue embryologic…
Vesamicol blocks the recovery, by recycling cholinergic electromotor synaptic vesicles, of the biophysical characteristics of the reserve population.
1993
The effect of vesamicol on the ability of recycling cholinergic synaptic vesicles to recover, during a period of post-stimulation rest, the biophysical properties of the reserve pool was studied in prestimulated perfused blocks of the electric organ of the electric ray, Torpedo marmorata, a tissue rich in cholinergic synapses. The effect of the drug was analysed by high-resolution centrifugal density-gradient fractionation in a zonal rotor of the extracted vesicles. The two vesicle fractions were identified by their ATP and acetylcholine content and the recycled vesicles by their acquisition of [3H]acetylcholine derived from [3H]acetate in the perfusate. Vesamicol (10 microM) blocked the up…
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation leads to physiological gains enhancing postural balance in the pre‐frail elderly
2015
International audience; Physiological aging leads to a progressive weakening of muscles and tendons, thereby disturbing the ability to control postural balance and consequently increasing exposure to the risks of falls. Here, we introduce a simple and easy-to-use neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) training paradigm designed to alleviate the postural control deficit in the elderly, the first hallmarks of which present as functional impairment. Nine pre-frail older women living in a long-term care facility performed 4 weeks of NMES training on their plantarflexor muscles, and seven nontrained, non-frail older women living at home participated in this study as controls. Participants w…

Reliability of measurements during countermovement jump assessments: Analysis of performance across subphases
2020
The aim of this study was to examine the reliability of performance measures in the different phases and sub-phases of the countermovement jump (CMJ). Seventeen male athletes competing at a regional level completed 204 valid trails consisting of the execution of maximal hands-on-waist CMJs performed on a force platform. The vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) data obtained at a sampling frequency of 1000 Hz were used to calculate performance-derived variables and determine key points and jump sub-phases. The relative reliability of 92 variables was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) from a two-way mixed effects model analyzing the time, force, power, velocity, and…
