Cognitive correlates in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a population-based study in Italy.
2014
Background There is less data available regarding the characteristics of cognitive impairment in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in a population-based series. Methodology Patients with ALS incident in Piemonte, Italy, between 2009 and 2011 underwent an extensive neuropsychological battery. Cognitive status was classified as follows: normal cognition, frontotemporal dementia (ALS-FTD), executive cognitive impairment (ALS-ECI), non-executive cognitive impairment (ALS-NECI), behavioural impairment (ALS-Bi), non-classifiable cognitive impairment. We also assessed 127 age-matched and gender-matched controls identified through patients’ general practitioners. Results Out of the …

Genistein effect on cognition in prodromal Alzheimer's disease patients : the GENIAL clinical trial
2022
Background: Delaying the transition from minimal cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s dementia is a major concern in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) therapeutics. Pathological signs of AD occur years before the onset of clinical dementia. Thus, long-term therapeutic approaches, with safe, minimally invasive, and yet efective substances are recommended. There is a need to develop new drugs to delay Alzheimer’s dementia. We have taken a nutritional supplement approach with genistein, a chemically defned polyphenol that acts by multimodal specifc mechanisms. Our group previously showed that genistein supplementation is efective to treat the double transgenic (APP/PS1) AD animal model. Methods: In this…
Clinical features and lifestyle of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in Campania: brief overview of an Italian database
2012
Background. Physical activity and occupational exposures appeared to play a relevant role in pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease of unknown origin. Materials and methods. We aimed to make an overview of the clinical characteristics and life - style (occupation and sport) of a population of 395 patients with ALS from campania, in southern Italy. Results. ALS onset resulted anticipated of about 11 years in industry workers, whilst the more frequent site of onset among farmers was upper limbs. compared to non-athletes, athletes, particu- larly soccer players, showed a 7 years anticipation of ALS onset, with higher mortality after 5 years. Discussion…

Optimisation et implémentation de méthodes bio-inspirées d'extraction de caractéristiques pour la reconnaissance d'objets visuels
2016
Industry has growing needs for so-called “intelligent systems”, capable of not only ac-quire data, but also to analyse it and to make decisions accordingly. Such systems areparticularly useful for video-surveillance, in which case alarms must be raised in case ofan intrusion. For cost saving and power consumption reasons, it is better to perform thatprocess as close to the sensor as possible. To address that issue, a promising approach isto use bio-inspired frameworks, which consist in applying computational biology modelsto industrial applications. The work carried out during that thesis consisted in select-ing bio-inspired feature extraction frameworks, and to optimize them with the aim t…
ZBTB20 is crucial for the specification of a subset of callosal projection neurons and astrocytes in the mammalian neocortex
2021
ABSTRACT Neocortical progenitor cells generate subtypes of excitatory projection neurons in sequential order followed by the generation of astrocytes. The transcription factor zinc finger and BTB domain-containing protein 20 (ZBTB20) has been implicated in regulation of cell specification during neocortical development. Here, we show that ZBTB20 instructs the generation of a subset of callosal projections neurons in cortical layers II/III in mouse. Conditional deletion of Zbtb20 in cortical progenitors, and to a lesser degree in differentiating neurons, leads to an increase in the number of layer IV neurons at the expense of layer II/III neurons. Astrogliogenesis is also affected in the mut…
