LaAg x In1?x
1980
The phonon dispersion of LaAg x In1−x (x=1, 0.89, 0.8) has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering in the cubic high temperature phase. A soft mode behaviour was observed at theM-point. The doubling and the cubic to tetragonal deformation of the elementary cell was observed through the phase transition. The measurements of the elastic constants were extended to 450 K and their magnetic field dependence was investigated.
Weak itinerant ferromagnetism and electronic and crystal structures of alkali-metal iron antimonides: NaFe4Sb12andKFe4Sb12
2004
The synthesis, chemical, structural, and magnetic properties of alkali-metal compounds with filled-skutterudite structure, $\mathrm{Na}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{12}$ and $\mathrm{K}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{12}$, are described. X-ray and neutron diffraction and elemental analysis established the crystal structure without defects and disorder on the cation site. The temperature and pressure dependence of the cubic unit cell of $\mathrm{Na}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{12}$ and the displacement parameter of Na are investigated. The electronic structure is calculated by density functional methods (LMTO, FPLO). Quantum chemical calculations (electron localization function) reveal …
Modulated magnetic structures of ErPb3, HoPb3, ErTl3 and HoTl3
1981
Neutron diffraction experiments have been carried out on the magnetically ordered phases of ErPb3, HoPb3, ErTl3 and HoTl3. The magnetic moments were found to be sinusoidally modulated with a propagation vector of (0, 0.2, 0.5) for the Pb-compounds and (0.38, 0.38, 0.16) for the Tl-compounds.
Realization of a two-dimensional Ising system: Deuterium physisorbed on krypton-preplated graphite
2004
Volumetric adsorption isotherm, calorimetric, and neutron diffraction measurements were used to characterize the quantum system ${\mathrm{D}}_{2}$ coadsorbed on graphite preplated by a monolayer of Kr. From the results obtained by these methods a detailed phase diagram of the complete submonolayer coverage range up to the initial stages of bilayer formation could be constructed. The dominant feature of the phase diagram is a commensurate $(1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1)[\frac{1}{2}]$ structure, which was determined by neutron diffraction. Three phase transitions of this phase were studied: The order-disorder transition at the critical point which, according to the influence of the co…
Anisotropic exchange in ErSb
1983
The correlations of the magnetic moments and the magnetic order parameter of ErSb have been studied by neutron diffraction. The antiferromagnetic phase transition is of first order. The diffuse paramagnetic scattering is evaluated in terms of magnetic coupling tensors which are characterized by a strong two-ion anisotropy.
Physical Origin of Anharmonic Dynamics in Proteins: New Insights From Resolution-Dependent Neutron Scattering on Homomeric Polypeptides
2012
Neutron scattering reveals a complex dynamics in polypeptide chains, with two main onsets of anharmonicity whose physical origin and biological role are still debated. In this study the dynamics of strategically selected homomeric polypeptides is investigated with elastic neutron scattering using different energy resolutions and compared with that of a real protein. Our data spotlight the dependence of anharmonic transition temperatures and fluctuation amplitudes on energy resolution, which we quantitatively explain in terms of a two-site model for the protein-hydration water energy landscape. Experimental data strongly suggest that the protein dynamical transition is not a mere resolution …
Neutron diffraction study of the heavy fermion superconductors UM2Al3(M=Pd, Ni)
1992
An elastic neutron scattering study was performed on the new superconducting heavy fermion systems UPd2Al3 and UNi2Al3. The neutron diffraction patterns reveal unambiguously long range antiferromagnetic order in UPd2Al3 with an ordered magnetic momentμ U = (0.85±0.03)μ B , which coexists with the superconducting state. This is by far the largestμ U value observed for any heavy fermion superconductor. For UNi2Al3, no long-range magnetic order could be observed for temperaturesT≧1.5 K, yielding an upper limit of the ordered moment of 0.2μ B .
Polystyrene Sulfonate–Porphyrin Assemblies: Influence of Polyelectrolyte and Porphyrin Structure
2011
In this study, electrostatic self-assembly of different polystyrene sulfonates and a set of tetravalent cationic porphyrins is investigated. It is shown that association of linear polystyrene sulfonates of different molar masses yields finite size nanoscale assemblies that are stable in aqueous solution. Aggregates are compared to the ones of cylindrical brushes, revealing that both form assemblies in the 100 nm range with the charge ratio (molar ratio of porphyrin charges to polyelectrolyte charges) being determining, while the morphology of the resulting network-like assemblies is different for both polyelectrolyte architectures. For the smallest 8k polystyrene sulfonate, in addition, sto…
Nucleation and Growth of CaCO3 Mediated by the Egg-White Protein Ovalbumin: A Time-Resolved in situ Study Using Small-Angle Neutron Scattering
2008
Mineralization of calcium carbonate in aqueous solutions starting from its initiation was studied by time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). SANS revealed that homogeneous crystallization of CaCO 3 involves an initial formation of thin plate-shaped nuclei which subsequently reassemble to 3-dimensional particles, first of fractal and finally of compact structure. The presence of the egg-white protein ovalbumin leads to a different progression of mineralization through several stages; the first step represents amorphous CaCO 3, whereas the other phases are crystalline. The formation and dissolution of the amorphous phase is accompanied by Ca (2+)-mediated unfolding and cross-link…
Incoherent elastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering investigation of hemoglobin dynamics.
2005
In this work we investigate the dynamic properties of hemoglobin in glycerolD(8)/D(2)O solution using incoherent elastic (ENS) and quasi-elastic (QENS) neutron scattering. Taking advantage of complementary energy resolutions of backscattering spectrometers at ILL (Grenoble), we explore motions in a large space-time window, up to 1 ns and 14 A; moreover, in order to cover the harmonic and anharmonic protein dynamics regimes, the elastic experiments have been performed over the wide temperature interval of 20-300 K. To study the dependence of the measured dynamics upon the protein quaternary structure, both deoxyhemoglobin (in T quaternary conformation) and carbonmonoxyhemoglobin (in R quater…
