Structural Organization of Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels Obtained by Freezing and Thawing Techniques:  A SANS Study

The structural organization of matter in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels obtained by repeatedly freezing and thawing dilute solutions of PVA in D2O is investigated by use of small-angle neutron scattering measurements (SANS). This study is the first systematic and quantitative investigation in the medium range of length scales on PVA hydrogels obtained by freezing and thawing techniques. The studied gels have a complex hierarchical structure, extending over a wide range of length scales. The structural organization on the micron length scale originates from the presence of two separated phases constituted by polymer-rich and polymer-poor regions. Magnetic and structural properties of the double-perovskite Ca2FeReO6

Abstract We suceeded in the preparation of polycrystalline Ca2FeReO6 which has a Curie temperature TC of 540 K, the highest value of all magnetic perovskites investigated till now. This material has been characterised by X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. We found at 548 K, a monoclinic unit cell (space group P21/n) with a=5.4366(5) A , b=5.5393(5) A , c=7.7344(5) A , and β=90.044(4)°. For temperatures below 400 K, a phase separation in two monoclinic phases with identical cell volume is observed in neutron scattering. Magnetic properties of some rare‐earth magnesium compounds RMg2

The magnetic properties of the compounds PrMg2, NdMg2, DyMg2, and ErMg2 were studied by means of neutron diffraction at various temperatures. All these compounds give rise to ferromagnetic ordering. The absolute values of the magnetic moments in the magnetically ordered state are lower than the free‐ion values. Inelastic neutron scattering at several temperatures was studied in PrMg2 and NdMg2. Analysis of the scattering data in conjunction with the results of specific‐heat and magnetization measurements shows that PrMg2 is an induced‐moment system (G3 ground state), where quadrupolar effects carry a large weight in determining the magnetic properties. Comparison of neutron and X-ray scattering of dilute myoglobin solutions.

Experimental results obtained by neutron scattering of dilute solutions of myoglobin are compared with those obtained by X-ray scattering. X-ray scattering remains the more powerful technique at wider angles above 0.3 A−1, where neutron experiments are less accurate because of low coherent scattering probability and high incoherent background. Neutron scattering is preferable at momentum transfers below 0.2 A−1; the conditions for applying the contrast variation method for the evaluation of the three basic scattering functions, which are due to shape and internal structure, equation (3), are ideally fulfilled in this region. Abstract Proteins have distinctive dynamical properties, characterized by the fluctuations of protein molecules among the different minima of their energy landscape. Resonance scattering in macromolecular structure research

Resonance (or anomalous) X-ray scattering of partially ordered macromolecular structures, amorphous materials and solutions is encountered in the near edge region of X-ray absorption edges where the resonant real part f' of atomic form factors shows the strongest dispersion. The requirements of spectral brilliance in the near absorption edges can only be met by synchrotron radiation emitted from high energy electron (positron) storage rings. Resonance scattering yields three basic scattering functions. This compares to contrast variation in neutron scattering. Structural features of selected protic ionic liquids based on a super-strong base

Protic ionic liquids (PIL) were prepared from a super-strong base 1,7-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) and super-strong acids, trifluoromethane sulfonic acid (TfOH), and (trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-(nonafluorobutylsulfonyl)imide, (IM14H), ([DBUH][TfO] and [DBUH][IM14], respectively; the latter for the first time) and their chemical and physical properties and structural features have been explored using a synergy of experimental and computational tools. Magnetism of monomer MnO and heterodimer FePt@MnO nanoparticles

We report about the magnetic properties of antiferromagnetic (AF) MnO nanoparticles (NPs) with different sizes (6--19 nm). Using a combination of polarized neutron scattering and magnetometry, we were able to resolve previously observed peculiarities. Magnetometry, on the one hand, reveals a peak in the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) magnetization curves at low temperatures $(\ensuremath{\sim}25$ K) but $no$ feature around the N\'eel temperature at 118 K. On the other hand, polarized neutron scattering shows the expected behavior of the AF order parameter vanishing around 118 K. Phonon Dispersion of Wurtzite CdSe: The Bond Charge Model

The phonon dispersion of wurtzite CdSe is presented along the main directions of the Brillouin zone. The study has been performed by using a bond charge model for wurtzite-type semiconductors with only six adjustable parameters. The results are compared against neutron scattering data and ab initio calculations. The phonon eigenvectors corresponding to the vibrational modes at the Γ-point are in very good agreement with the ab initio calculations.
