The Authorities’ Attitude Towards Treasure Hunting

2012

Shortly after the fall of the Bastille, a London newspaper was scandalized that people had been imprisoned there for mere trifles. Among the prisoners listed was a certain Girard, allegedly a treasure seeker.1 Was treasure seeking indeed merely a trifling offence? What had the courts and law enforcement agencies of premodern Britain and Europe to say about it? As we have seen in Chapter 1, treasure hunting as such was hardly ever illegal. It was, however, riddled with legal difficulties. What percentage of his find would the treasure hunter actually get? What would the fisc demand for the prince’s coffers? In addition to these juridical problems, an important part of pre-modern treasure hun…

Fake News. Soluzioni design driven per il citizen journalism

2022

Packaging and plastic are synonymous with waste: But is that really the case?

2022

The paper presents the value of packaging and misconceptions about plastic. In addition to shedding light on clichés and fake news about plastic and packaging, it outlines opportunities to consider the use and management of packaging for responsible waste collection; and new forms of consumption and supply chains to facilitate the transition from the current linear consumption model to one that is more responsible and open to a circular economy.

MARC NEWSON DESIGN TRA ORGANICITÀ E FANTASCIENZA

2005

Fake News. A design driven approach

2022

The phenomenon of Fake News affects both individual choices and political opinions and orientations. But pervasiveness of digital technologies and dissemination of fake news are two sides of the same coin; therefore, to stem Fake News we need advanced and interdisciplinary technologies and strategies. Starting from the culture of design, where visual communication and visual information support an ethical approach shared with journalistic communication. Finally, the Fake News project highlighted the innovative potential of Artificial Intelligence, which through metrics and algorithms, but also with the unavoidable contribution of people, for the different design skills involved, can support…

Fake News.

2022

As part of the Smart Specialization Strategy (RIS3), funded by the European Union, the Sicilian Region has promoted the Fake News project in agreement with the aim of developing information exchange and comparison tools online. The goal is to concentrate European resources in emerging technological sectors that can really develop in the same region by focusing on the construction of local knowledge, rather than on the transfer of high-cost external technological resources. Fake News project has the main objective the experimentation of advanced ICT technologies (artificial intelligence) applied to the phenomenon of disinformation, through the dialogue between the private entrepreneur (a com…

A Novel Approach for Supporting Italian Satire Detection Through Deep Learning

2021

Satire is a way of criticizing people (or ideas) by ridiculing them on political, social, and morals topics often used to denounce political and societal problems, leveraging comedic devices such as parody exaggeration, incongruity, etc.etera. Detecting satire is one of the most challenging computational linguistics tasks, natural language processing, and social multimedia sentiment analysis. In particular, as satirical texts include figurative communication for expressing ideas/opinions concerning people, sentiment analysis systems may be negatively affected; therefore, satire should be adequately addressed to avoid such systems’ performance degradation. This paper tackles automatic satire…

Fake News Spreaders Detection: Sometimes Attention Is Not All You Need

2022

Guided by a corpus linguistics approach, in this article we present a comparative evaluation of State-of-the-Art (SotA) models, with a special focus on Transformers, to address the task of Fake News Spreaders (i.e., users that share Fake News) detection. First, we explore the reference multilingual dataset for the considered task, exploiting corpus linguistics techniques, such as chi-square test, keywords and Word Sketch. Second, we perform experiments on several models for Natural Language Processing. Third, we perform a comparative evaluation using the most recent Transformer-based models (RoBERTa, DistilBERT, BERT, XLNet, ELECTRA, Longformer) and other deep and non-deep SotA models (CNN,…
