The malleability behind terms referring to common professional roles: the current meaning of “boss” in British newspapers
2018
Mediated sacralization and the construction of postmodern communio sanctorum: The case of the Swedish foreign minister anna lindh
2005
In the media age, the linkage between mediated communities and images is established by the sacralization of images. Based on the theoretical insights of Michel Maffesoli and on an influential tradition in French sociology, which includes Emile Durkheim, Georges Bataille, and Rene Girard, this article attempts to apply the theory of sacred images to the empirical analysis of images in the media. The analysis of the Swedish and Finnish newspapers' visual coverage of the assassination of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh suggests that the process of sacralization is actually performed as a communicative behavior involving the media and the crowd as the main actors and a number of symbols wh…
Can an unglamorous non-event affect prices? The role of newspapers
2016
AbstractOur paper offers evidence that the print media can affect stock prices by covering public information. After price-to-book value figures of Italian listed shares were first published on the major national financial newspaper, the prices of value stocks did, on average, show a positive reaction. The price reaction was limited to small caps stocks and disappeared within three weeks. Over the period of analysis, we could not find any abnormal behaviour of the returns of small and value stocks on other European markets. These findings support the view that newspapers play a role in disseminating information to small investors and grabbing their attention, even if news are continuously r…

2020
A mediated tolerance of violence: an analysis of online newspaper articles and “below-the-line” comments in the Latvian media This article analyses the framing of tolerance of violence in Latvian newspaper articles published online and the reader response “below-the-line” comments to these and how these frames may negatively present and impact those who suffer violence. The text is based on qualitative media content analysis of 3,166 documents in the Latvian, Russian and English languages from Latvian news sources online published between 2010 and 2018…
First foreign grocery retailer enters the Finnish market—a stakeholder model
2004
Abstract Finnish grocery retailing has until recently been dominated by four major domestic retail groups. The first totally foreign grocery retailer, hard discount chain Lidl, was the first entrant into the Finnish market. This paper describes and analyses the entry process of Lidl from the perspective of the stakeholder groups in the host market. The stakeholder model of foreign retailer entry is used as a framework in exploring the stages of the entry as well as the reactions, roles and motives of the relevant stakeholders. Secondary data was collected from articles published in newspapers and business magazines and minutes of the municipal board meetings. The three stakeholder attribute…

Information structure and practice as facilitators of deaf users' navigation in textual websites
2009
Deaf users might find it difficult to navigate through websites with textual content which, for many of them, constitutes the written representation of a non-native oral language. With the aim of testing how the information structure could compensate for this difficulty, 27 prelingual deaf users of sign language were asked to search a set of headlines in a web newspaper where information structure and practice were manipulated. While practice did not affect deep structures (web content distributed through four layers of nodes), wide structures (web content concentrated in two layers) did facilitate users' performance in the last trial block and compromised it in the first trial block. It is…
News values as evaluation. Main naming practices in Violence Against Women news stories in contemporary Spanish newspapers: El País vs. El Mundo (200…
2021
Violence Against Women (VAW) is a very sensitive, and highly ideological, topic in the Spanish society, as well as in Western societies generally. In Spain, media accounts of VAW are very closely related to two quality newspapers, El País and El Mundo, providing a variety of naming practices for VAW, with differing ideological and evaluative implications. In this paper, I compare and contrast these two dailies in their use of the three main naming practices —violencia de género ‘gender-based violence’, violencia doméstica ‘domestic violence’ and violencia machista ‘male violence’— used in VAW news. To do so I resort to the news values approach proposed by Bednarek and Caple (2012, 2014, 201…
