Le ragioni della norma. Merito, responsabilità, giustizia in Platone e Nietzsche

2017

The paper aims at finding an explicit connection between the thesis issued by Arthur Adkins in the volume “Merit and Responsibility” (1960) and Nietzschean theories about the change of moral lexicon in the transition from archaic Greece to the democratic one. The retrieval of this connection is particularly focused on the notions of “merit” and “responsibility” and on the role played by Plato's moral theory.

«Ich kann Nietzsche nicht böse sein, weil er mir meine Deutschen verdorben hat…». Thomas Mann lettore della Geburt der Tragödie

2022

The paper proposes an analysis of the reception of Nietzsche’s Die Geburt der Tragödie in Thomas Mann, with particular attention to the essay (1947) dedicated to the philosopher and to Doktor Faustus. The novel is read as an example of productive reception: Nietzsche’s categories of Apollonian and Dionysian, and even more so the idea of a rebirth of the great tragic art, become narrative cues that animate the entire story. The Doktor Faustus does not limit itself to parodying particular concepts of the Birth of Tragedy, but ends up presenting itself as a captivating ‘instruction manual’ for a correct reading of Nietzsche’s work.

A non-reductionist Physiologism. Nietzsche on Body, Mind and Cosciousness

2013

This paper addresses the following questions from the point of view of Nietzsche’s philosophy: What is the mind, and which kind of relationship does it hold to the body? Accordingly, the aim of this paper is to show that Nietzsche’s philosophy suggested a view of the mind that allows to outline an alternative stance to both mentalism and physicalism, as well as to both dualism and reductionism. It is argued that Nietzsche’s rehabilitation of the body as the specific seat of the mind in opposition to the Cartesian supremacy of the Ego still is of a great interest for contemporary philosophy, since it is not equivalent either to a reversed form of Cartesian dualism or to a physicalist reducti…

The early Wittgenstein, Tolstoy’s Kurze Darlegung des Evangelium and Nietzsche’s Der Antichrist

2010

To understand the religious background to Wittgenstein’s work and the man himself, it is helpful to bear in mind the Catholic education his mother gave him from infancy, and to take note of at least some of the authors who influenced him in this area from adolescence and youth, for example, Angelus Silesius, Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer, William James, and the two greatest Russian writers of the nineteenth century, Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. It may also be appropriate to add Nietzsche to this list, as we shall try to explain.
