Evaluation of Fitness and the Balance Levels of Children with a Diagnosis of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: A Pilot Study
2017
Background: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is a main cause of physical disability and has high economic costs for society. The purpose of this study was to assess the fitness levels and the postural and balance deficits with a specific test battery. Methods: Fifty-six subjects were enrolled in this study. Thirty-nine healthy subjects were included in the control group and seventeen in the juvenile idiopathic arthritis group. All subjects were evaluated using a posturography system. The fitness level was evaluated with a battery of tests (Abalakov test, sit-up test, hand grip test, backsaver sit and reach, the toe touch test). An unpaired t-test was used to determine differences. Pearson’s co…
Development and Retest Reliability of a German Version of the Sexual Behaviour Questionnaire (SBQ-G)
2007
A German version of the Sexual Behaviour Questionnaire (SBQ-G) is a short self-rating instrument covering the four domains of sexual function using colloquial words. Frequency of sexual dysfunction was counted and chance-corrected retest reliability was calculated. Eleven women and 12 men participated. Reception of the SBQ-G was favourable and more females than males reported at least moderate sexual dysfunction. Sexual arousal and ability to enjoy sex showed the lowest retest stability. The SBQ-G is a recommendable clinical instrument with high practicability and satisfactory retest reliability. However, gender differences and a high variability of sexual functioning in healthy subjects sh…
Observational multicentric trial performed with doxazosin: evaluation of sexual effects on patients with diagnosed benign prostatic hyperplasia.
2002
<i>Introduction:</i> The aim of our study is to verify the effects of doxazosin on sexual function in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). <i>Materials and Methods:</i> We enrolled 102 patients with BPH, selected by nine Italian Urology Departments. Patients were evaluated with the International Prostatic Symptom Score (I-PSS) and divided into two groups: those with intact sexual activity and those with erectile dysfunction. According to the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), the second cohort was divided into three subgroups on the basis of the degree of erectile dysfunction degree (severe, moderate or mild). All patients underwent 3 month…
Intraoperative identification and neurophysiologic parameters to verify pelvic autonomic nerve function during total mesorectal excision for rectal c…
2003
Abstract Background Preservation of parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves is required to avoid urogenital function disturbances after total mesorectal excision (TME) for rectal carcinoma. This study sought to determine whether intraoperative stimulation of parasympathetic nerves with monitoring of bladder contraction is useful in meeting this demand. Study design In a prospective pilot study, 17 patients, 11 men and 6 women, underwent TME with pelvic autonomic nerve preservation performed by an experienced surgeon. The parasympathetic nerves were stimulated by an electrostimulation device (Screener 3625, Medronic), and the resulting bladder contraction was measured manometrically in all pa…
Does Transfer Capacitive Resistive Energy Has a Therapeutic Effect on Peyronie's Disease? Randomized, Single-Blind, Sham-Controlled Study on 96 Patie…
2017
<b><i>Background/Aims/Objectives:</i></b> We have investigated the clinical and physiological effects of Transfer Capacitive Resistive Energy (TCARE) therapy on men with Peyronie's disease (PD). <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Ninety-six men with PD have been randomized in a 2:1 ratio to receive 3 sessions of TCARE therapy or sham therapy. Pain, penile curvature and erectile function have been assessed before the first treatment and up to 9 months after the end of treatment, using the Visual Analogue Scale for the pain, a goniometer to measure the degree of curvature using at-home photography and an International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) que…
Circumcision in Nesbit Corporoplasty: A Mandatory Time? Our Experience on 158 Patients
2011
Introduction The Nesbit procedure is the most common surgical technique to correct congenital or acquired penile curvature. It is a common opinion that this surgical procedure has to be completed with a circumcision to prevent foreskin necrosis or phimosis. According to our experience we believe that some procedural “tricks” could strongly reduce that mechanical and ischemic trauma on the foreskin responsible for these complications. Materials and Methods From 1988 to 2010 we selected 158 patients treated with Nesbit's corporoplasty. The procedure was recommended to patients who presented a penile curvature wider than 30° and reporting however some difficulty or pain at coitus, or to patien…
Commentary on “Effects of patients' understanding and choice of surgical types on postoperative outcomes of Peyronie's disease: a single-center retro…
2021
Surgical correction can be considered for treating patients with a chronic phase of Peyronie's disease (PD) and persistent penile curvature. In clinical practice, some patients pay too much attention to surgical complications and refuse the recommended feasible surgical types. Meanwhile, they require operations according to their preferences. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of patients’ own choice of surgical type on postoperative satisfaction. This retrospective study analyzed data from 108 patients with PD who underwent surgical correction according to doctors’ recommendations or patients’ own demands. The objective and subjective surgical outcomes were assessed. Patients’ unders…
[Penile Flexiflate® Surgitek prosthesis explant and simultaneous three-component hydraulic Titan® Alpha 1 prosthesis implantation, with double incisi…
2010
Introduction and Objectives We treated a 45 years old patient, suffering from diabetes mellitus since childhood, with retinal, neurovascular and kidney complications. In 1988, for erectile dysfunction (ED) resistant to medical injective treatment, the patient underwent ligation of the dorsal vein of the penis without any result. In 1989 a Flexiflate® hydraulic prosthesis was implanted with resolution of ED. In 2005 the patient underwent simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant with a trans-laparotomic approach for end stage renal disease and diabetes mellitus. In 2009, because of the Flexiflate® Surgitek malfunction, the patient underwent explantation of the Flexiflate® prosthesis and si…
Purification and reassessment of ligand binding by the recombinant, putative juvenile hormone receptor of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta
1996
The 29 kDa protein from the larval epidermis of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, that specifically bound photoaffinity analogs of JH I and JH II was produced by a recombinant baculovirus (rJP29). The higher of the two molecular weight forms made corresponded to a protein that could be formed by read‐through of the TGA termination codon to the following TAA. The previously reported, apparent high affinity binding of [methyl‐3H]‐JH I by rJP29 as measured by the dextran‐coated charcoal (DCC) assay [Palli et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 91:6191–6195 (1994)] was found to be artifactual due to endogenous cellular esterases that co‐purified with rJP29 through both DEAE cellulose and MonoQ chrom…
A monoclonal antibody against an adult-specific cuticular protein of Tenebrio molitor (Insecta, Coleoptera)
1989
International audience; To study the sequential expression of the epidermal program in the mealworm Tenebrio molitor, monoclonal antibodies were prepared against the water-soluble proteins from preecdysial adult cuticle. Among the 16 clones obtained, one of them (named K2F6) recognized a 20-kDa antigen, found only in adult extracts but not in the larval or pupal ones, as revealed by immunoblot analysis. Our results strongly suggest an epidermal origin for this protein. The monoclonal antibody K2F6 fails to react with water-soluble proteins from fat body and hemolymph taken during the deposition of the 20-kDa antigen. Electron microscopic immunogold localization of this antigen showed that i…
