Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum CECT 7765 improves metabolic and immunological altered functions in high fat fed mice, however little is known about the effects of potential probiotics on vascular reactivity. Origins of radiation-induced attenuation in pure-silica-core and Ge-doped optical fibers under pulsed x-ray irradiation

We investigated the nature, optical properties, and decay kinetics of point defects causing large transient attenuation increase observed in silica-based optical fibers exposed to short duration and high-dose rate x-ray pulses. The transient radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) spectra of pure-silica-core (PSC), Ge-doped, F-doped, and Ge + F-doped optical fibers (OFs) were acquired after the ionizing pulse in the spectral range of [∼0.8–∼3.2] eV (∼1500–∼380 nm), from a few ms to several minutes after the pulse, at both room temperature (RT) and liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT). A Selenium-Nitrogen Chain with Selenium in Different Oxidation States

The reaction of tBuNH2 with a mixture of SeCl2 and SeOCl2 in a 6:2:1 molar ratio produces the novel selenium-nitrogen chain ClSeN(tBu)Se(O)Cl (4), in which the selenium atoms are in two different oxidation states, SeII and SeIV. The crystal structure of 4 is compared with that of the related SeII/SeII system ClSeN(tBu)SeCl (1) and differences are attributed to hyperconjugative effects. The energetics of the formation of 4 via two different routes are elucidated by PBE0/def2-TZVPP calculations. peerReviewed

[N,N-bis(1-methyl-2-benzimidazolyl)methyl-N-(bis-2-pyridylmethyl)amine] ( L 1 ) and [N,N-bis(2-quinolylmethyl)-N-bis(2-pyridyl)methylamine] ( L 2 ) were employed to prepare Cu II  and Cu I  complexes for spectroscopic and structural characterization. [ L 1 Cu II (H 2 O)](NO 3 ) 2 and [ L 2 Cu II (NO 3 )]NO 3 have Jahn-Teller distorted octahedral geometries, and give rise to isotropic EPR spectra in frozen solution. [ L 1 Cu I (CH 3 CN)]OTf and [ L 2 Cu I (CH 3 CN)]OTf have distorted trigonal bipyramidal and tetrahedral solid-state structures, respectively. Measurement of the average shape of longitudinal profiles of cosmic-ray air showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The profile of the longitudinal development of showers produced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays carries information related to the interaction properties of the primary particles with atmospheric nuclei. In this work, we present the first measurement of the average shower profile in traversed atmospheric depth at the Pierre Auger Observatory. The shapes of profiles are well reproduced by the Gaisser-Hillas parametrization within the range studied, for E>10 17.8 eV .A detailed analysis of the systematic uncertainties is performed using ten years of data and a full detector simulation. Bulk stable nitrogen isotope values of the carbonate-bound organic matrix in bivalve shells (δ15NCBOM) are increasingly used to assess past food web dynamics, track anthropogenic nitrogen pollution and reconstruct hydrographic changes. However, it remains unresolved if the δ15NCBOM values are also affected by directed ontogenetic trends which can bias ecological and environmental interpretations. This very aspect is tested here with modern and fossil specimens of the long-lived ocean quahog, Arctica islandica, collected from different sites and water depths in the NE Atlantic Ocean.
