Abstract The synthesis of the open-chain and cyclic polyamines, 1,5,8,12,15,19-hexaazaheptadecane (L1) and 2,6,9,13,16,20-hexaaza[21]-(2,6)-pyridinophane (L2), are described. The protonation constants and interaction constants with Cu(II) have been determined by potentiometric measurements carried out at 298.1 K in 0.15 mol dm −3 NaClO 4 . The values obtained are discussed as a function of the open-chain or cyclic nature of the ligands and compared with analogous polyamines containing different sets of hydrocarbon chains between the nitrogen donors. AbstractMetabolons represent the structural organization of proteins for metabolic or regulatory pathways. Here the interaction of enzymes fumarase FumB and aspartase AspA with the C4-DC transporters DcuA and DcuB of Escherichia coli was tested by a bacterial two-hybrid (BACTH) assay in situ, or by co-chromatography (mSPINE). DcuB interacted strongly with FumB and AspA, and DcuA with AspA. The fumB-dcuB and the dcuA-aspA genes encoding the respective proteins are known for their colocalization on the genome and the production of co-transcripts. Effect of storage and composting on the properties and degradability of cattle manure

Abstract Stockpiling or thermophilic composting of cattle manure resulted in significant carbon losses of 17% and 26.4% and relative nitrogen gains of 25% and 32.7% for stockpiled and composted manure, respectively. As a consequence, C/N ratios decreased with increasing time of storage or composting. However, neither the pH nor the mineral nitrogen and organic carbon contents of the 0–50 μm fractions were significant indicators of the transformations of these materials. The degradability of the manure was measured by incubation for 2 weeks in a brown calcareous soil, following 1 week of preincubation. Well water quality in Latvia

A total of 2500 water samples from drinking water shallow wells and boreholes in rural areas of Latvia were collected. The samples were analyzed for 20 parameters. Well waters in Latvia can be characterized by a high content of organic (humic) substances. Mean values for analyzed water parameters are: 0.17 mg/1 NH4, 0.016 mg/1 NO2, 2.90 mg/1 NO3, 0.028 mg/1 PO4, 25.53 mg/1 Cl, 0.12 mg/1 Fe, 7.4 pH, 784 μ/cm conductivity, 24 degrees in PtCo scale color, 7.5 mgequiv/1 total hardness. Comparison with water quality criteria adopted in the USA and European Communiy indicate that water quality is often unsatisfactory. Anaerobic batch degradation of solid poultry slaughterhouse waste

We studied anaerobic batch degradation of solid poultry slaughterhouse wastes with different initial waste and inoculum concentrations and waste-to-inoculum ratios and simulated the dynamics of the process with a new generation <METHANE> model. Our modelling results suggest that inhibited propionate degradation by long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) and inhibited hydrolysis by a high propionate concentration constituted the rate-limiting step in the waste degradation. Palmitate was the most abundant LCFA in the assays. Within 27 days of incubation, up to 0.55 to 0.67 m3 of methane (STP)/kg VS added was produced under the studied conditions. During processing of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) hydrolytic chain scission, induced by the presence of small amounts of water, is the main cause of degradation. During repeated reprocessing chain scission can also occur because of the presence of other polymeric contaminants like PVC. In order to avoid or to limit hydrolytic chain cleavage adequate drying of PET before melt processing is necessary. Abstract Several light-induced reactions of polymers are described. The light-sensitive groups are part of the macromolecules. Photoisomerization of polyvinylbutyral produces a polymer with vinylbutyrate-groups. At exposure to light, furan and benzofuran are added to the carbonyl-groups of polyvinylbenzophenone. Polymers with azido-groups are prepared, which eliminate nitrogen at irradiation. Light-sensitive films can be cast from polymers with o-quinonediazide-groups.
