Robust optical readout and characterization of nuclear spin transitions in nitrogen-vacancy ensembles in diamond

2019

Nuclear spin ensembles in diamond are promising candidates for quantum sensing applications, including rotation sensing. Here we perform a characterization of the optically detected nuclear-spin transitions associated with the 14N nuclear spin within diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers. We observe nuclear-spin-dependent fluorescence with the contrast of optically detected 14N nuclear Rabi oscillations comparable to that of the NV electron spin. Using Ramsey spectroscopy, we investigate the temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the nuclear spin transitions in the 77.5-420 K and 350-675 G range, respectively. The nuclear quadrupole coupling constant Q was found to vary with temperatu…

Prediction of new inorganic molecules with quantum chemical methods

2006

Quantum chemistry can today be employed to invent new molecules and explore unknown molecular bonding. An overview of novel species containing metals bound to polynitrogen clusters is presented. The prediction of metal polyhydrides is discussed. Finally, some species containing gold that behaves as a halogen are described, together with recent advances in actinide chemistry and exploration of the nature of the actinide–actinide chemical bonding.

1H, 13C and 15N NMR spectral and theoretical studies of some methyl and alkylamino derivatives of 4-halopyridine N-oxides

2006

Abstract Nine new and three earlier known 4-halogen (Cl and Br) substituted pyridine N-oxides have been prepared and their 1 H, 13 C and 15 N NMR chemical shifts assigned based on PFG 1 H, X (X= 13 C and 15 N) HMQC and HMBC experiments as well as the comparison with our earlier results for substituted pyridine N-oxide derivatives. The 15 N resonances of the pyridine nitrogen are 27–40 ppm more shielded in 4-halo-2-alkylamino-6-methyl-5-nitropyridine N-oxide than in parent 4-halopyridine N-oxide. According to quantum chemical ab initio HF/6-311G** calculations the amino tautomer of 4-chloro-2-methylamino-6-methyl-5-nitropyridine N-oxide is more stable than its imino form. Using B3LYP/6-311G*…

A single photon source based on NV centers in diamond nanocrystals

2009

The development of reliable devices to generate single photons is crucial for applications in quantum cryptography, as well as for fundamental quantum optics experiments. Due to their extremely high photostability at room temperature, optically active defects in solids, the so called color centers, are among the most promising candidates. Single NV(nitrogen-vacancy) centers in diamond have been demonstrated to be able to generate single photons and have already shown advantages compared to attenuated laser pulses in a quantum cryptography experiment [1]. The nitrogen-vacancy center (NV center) in diamond consists of a substitutional nitrogen atom and an adjacent vacancy. This complex exhibi…

Hydrogen CARS thermometry in H2-N2 mixtures at high pressure and medium temperatures: influence of linewidths models

2000

International audience; In order to improve the accuracy of H2 CARS thermometry, H2 Q-branch CARS spectra have been recorded for various H2-N2 mixtures in a high-pressure cell at different pressures and temperatures (up to 40 bar and 875 K). Due to the low spectral resolution of broadband CARS experiments, the relevant spectral lineshape factor is the linewidth ratio G(Q(3))/G(Q(1)), since Q(1) and Q(3) are the most intense lines of the Q-branch spectrum in this temperature range. For the first time, the speed-inhomogeneous effects are accounted for in the simulation of the CARS profiles. The evaluated temperatures are in good agreement with reference values obtained by thermocouples. The s…

Influence of crystal defects on the electromigration of the hydrogen in palladium

2001

Abstract Electromigration and diffusion of hydrogen in palladium defected through quenching to liquid nitrogen temperature were investigated. It was found that the obtained experimental results cannot be described by means of a single flux of hydrogen which diffuses in a gradient of electric field. In order to effectively explain the obtained results, a theoretical model was elaborated. It assumed the existence of the following two fluxes of hydrogen in the quenched metal: • Ji—of migration, according to the interstitial mechanism, and • Ji–d—of migration, according to the interstitial-defective mechanism. Dependence of effective valences and diffusion coefficients for both mechanisms of tr…

On the operation of silicon photomultipliers at temperatures of 1–4 kelvin

2016

Abstract SiPM operation at cryogenic temperatures fails for many common devices. A particular type from Zecotek with deep channels in the silicon substrate instead of quenching resistors was tested at liquid helium temperature. Two similar types were thoroughly characterized from room temperature down to liquid nitrogen temperature by illuminating them with low light levels. At cryogenic temperatures the SiPMs show an unchanged rise-time and a fast recovery time, practically no after-pulses, and exhibit no increased cross-talk probability. Charge collection spectra were measured to extract the pixel gain and its variation, both comparable to room temperature at the same over-voltage. The qu…

Residential Exposure to Outdoor Air Pollution during Pregnancy and Anthropometric Measures at Birth in a Multicenter Cohort in Spain

2011

Background: A growing body of research suggests that prenatal exposure to air pollution may be harmful to fetal development. We assessed the association between exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and anthropometric measures at birth in four areas within the Spanish Children’s Health and Environment (INMA) mother and child cohort study. Methods: Exposure to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and benzene was estimated for the residence of each woman (n = 2,337) for each trimester and for the entire pregnancy. Outcomes included birth weight, length, and head circumference. The association between residential outdoor air pollution exposure and birth outcomes was assessed with linear regress…

Investigation of a Ge nanoparticle film by means of electron stimulated photon emission spectroscopy

2014

Abstract Electron stimulated photon emission spectroscopy was used for the study of the electronic structure of Ge nanoparticles. A nanoparticle film was prepared by thermal deposition on a quartz substrate. Photon emission was stimulated by electron bombardment at energies of several hundred electron volts. Electron field emission from a W-tip was used at tip voltage U t  = 100–600 eV. A spectrometer in combination with a liquid nitrogen cooled charge-coupled device (CCD) camera was used for light detection. Light emission spectra were measured in the energy range 1.18–4.2 eV. They are characterized by features at ∼1.6 and ∼3.1 eV. A comparison with light emission spectra obtained with ano…
