Comparison between hybrid moving bed biofilm reactor and activated sludge system: a pilot plant experiment
2010
The paper presents the comparison between the traditional activated sludge system (AS) and a hybrid moving bed biofilm reactor (HMBBR). In particular, an experimental campaign has been carried out at the WWTP in Palermo (Italy), on a pilot plant consisting of two pre-anoxic schemes. The aerated tank of the HMBBR line was filled with suspended carriers (AnoxKaldnes™ K1), with a 30% filling ratio. The hydraulic load of the HMBBR line was increased up to two times the AS one. Further, in order to distinguish the additional contribution of the attached biomass for the HMBBR system, in the two lines the Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) was maintained as equal as possible. The monitoring peri…
Carbon stock increases up to old growth forest along a secondary succession in Mediterranean island ecosystems.
2019
The occurrence of old-growth forests is quite limited in Mediterranean islands, which have been subject to particularly pronounced human impacts. Little is known about the carbon stocks of such peculiar ecosystems compared with different stages of secondary succession. We investigated the carbon variation in aboveground woody biomass, in litter and soil, and the nitrogen variation in litter and soil, in a 100 years long secondary succession in Mediterranean ecosystems. A vineyard, three stages of plant succession (high maquis, maquis-forest, and forest-maquis), and an old growth forest were compared. Soil samples at two soil depths (0-15 and 15-30 cm), and two litter types, relatively undec…
1,2-Methyl shift in the reaction of 4,7-dihydro-4,5-dimethyl-7-phenyl-(1,2,4)-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine with tosyl azide
2000
The reaction of the heterocyclic enamine 1 with tosyl azide (2) leads to the tosylimino derivative 4 of 1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine. The extrusion of nitrogen from the primary adduct 3 is followed by a 1,2-shift of a methyl group. The structure determination of 4 is based on 1H and 13C nmr spectra including NOE measurements.
Prediction of organic carbon and total nitrogen contents in organic wastes and their composts by Infrared spectroscopy and partial least square regre…
2017
Middle and near infrared (MIR and NIR) were employed to determine organic carbon (OC) and total nitrogen (TN) in different soil organic amendments including wastes, composts and mixtures of composts and organic wastes. Prediction models based on partial least squares (PLS) regression from the spectra of untreated samples were built. Different spectra preprocessing strategies were adopted and the best number of latent variable was evaluated using leave-one-out cross-validation. Attenuated total reflectance (PLS-ATR-MIR) and diffuse reflectance (PLS-DR-NIR) models were built and evaluated from root mean square error of cross validation and prediction (RMSECV and RMSEP), coefficients of determ…
Nitrogen isotope evidence for stepwise oxygenation of the ocean during the Great Oxidation Event
2019
24 pages; International audience; The Earth’s oxygenation represents one of the most important environmental drivers of life’s evolution, with the first rise, known as ‘the Great Oxidation Event’ (GOE), corresponding to unpreceded accumulation of atmospheric O2, changes in the flux of marine nutrients and possibly global glaciations. However, the detailed evolution of the GOE is still debated, as for instance the accumulation trends of oceanic versus atmospheric oxygen and the nature of biogeochemical responses to oxygenation. Here, we combine organic carbon and bulk nitrogen isotope compositions with major element concentrations and iron speciation data of sedimentary rocks recovered from …
Indicaxanthin from
2018
Oxidized low-density lipoproteins (oxLDL) play a pivotal role in the etiopathogenesis of atherosclerosis through the activation of inflammatory signaling events eventually leading to endothelial dysfunction and senescence. In the present work, we investigated the effects of indicaxanthin, a bioavailable, redox-modulating phytochemical from Opuntia ficus indica fruits, with anti-inflammatory activity, against oxLDL-induced endothelial dysfunction. Human umbilical vein cord cells (HUVEC) were stimulated with human oxLDL, and the effects of indicaxanthin were evaluated in a range between 5 and 20 μM, consistent with its plasma level after a fruit meal (7 μM). Pretreatment with indicaxanthin si…
Beclomethasone dipropionate and formoterol reduce oxidative/nitrosative stress generated by cigarette smoke extracts and IL-17A in human bronchial ep…
2013
Interleukin-17A (IL-17A), cigarette smoke and oxidative/nitrosative stress are involved in inflammatory airway diseases, and the mechanisms behind these processes are still poorly understood. We investigated whether recombinant human IL-17A (rhIL-17A), in combination with cigarette smoke extracts (CSE), increases the levels of inducibile nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), reactive oxygen species, nitrotyrosine (NT) and the activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT-1) in normal human bronchial epithelial cells (16HBE). The effect of beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP), formoterol and their combination was also evaluated. We demonstrated that rhIL-17A or CSE alone increa…
Towards light-mediated sensing of bacterial comfort
2013
Abstract Bacterial comfort is central to biotechnological applications. Here, we report the characterization of different sensoring systems, the first step within a broader synthetic biology-inspired light-mediated strategy to determine Escherichia coli perception of environmental factors critical to bacterial performance. We did so by directly ‘asking’ bacterial cultures with light-encoded questions corresponding to the excitation wavelength of fluorescent proteins placed under the control of environment-sensitive promoters. We built four genetic constructions with fluorescent proteins responding to glucose, temperature, oxygen and nitrogen; and a fifth construction allowing UV-induced exp…
The organic air pollutant cumene hydroperoxide interferes with NOantioxidant role in rehydrating lichen
2013
Organic pollutants effects on lichens have not been addressed. Rehydration is critical for lichens, a burst of free radicals involving NO occurs. Repeated dehydrations with organic pollutants could increase oxidative damage. Our aim is to learn the effects of cumene hydroperoxide (CP) during lichen rehydration using Ramalina farinacea (L.) Ach., its photobiont Trebouxia spp. and Asterochloris erici. Confocal imaging shows intracellular ROS and NO production within myco and phycobionts, being the chloroplast the main source of free radicals. CP increases ROS, NO and lipid peroxidation and reduces chlorophyll autofluorescence, although photosynthesis remains unaffected. Concomitant NO inhibit…
Role of rotation and nitrogen fertilization on the productive and qualitative response of durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.)
2012
Correct soil management can improve and/or sometimes restore the fertility of agricultural land. Crop rotations are important to maintain adequate soil organic matter content and to reduce chemical nutritional intake. Qualitative and productive durum wheat response is strongly influenced by soil nutrient availability, necessary for plant growth and development. Nitrogen availability, mainly during the first stage of growth, determines the uptake rate and total nitrogen uptake; later is also responsible of nitrogen translocation from vegetative to reproductive organs, determining yield and grain qualitative characteristics. The aim of the trial was to evaluate cropping system effects and nit…
