CONTEXT: We hypothesized that TSH-receptor (TSHR) stimulating antibodies (TSAbs) are involved in oxidative stress mechanisms in patients with Graves disease (GD). METHODS: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase, isoform 2 (NOX2); oxidative parameters; and oxidative burst were measured in serum, urine, and whole blood from patients with GD and control subjects. Purpose To alert ophthalmologists to the possibility of metastatic anterior chamber intraocular non-Hodgkin lymphoma in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Methods We examined a 19-year-old man with AIDS who had an anterior uveitis with pseudohypopyon and a history of 2 months of malaise. A specimen of the lesion was obtained with a 25-gauge needle for pathologic examination. RESULTS: Systemic exploration showed hepatomegaly. Abdominal computed tomography showed multiple lesions in the liver and spleen. Fine-needle aspiration disclosed a high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The pattern of free and antibody-complexed HIV antigen and the antibody profile were investigated retrospectively in 305 serum samples taken from 22 AIDS patients before and during the development of AIDS and from 40 apparently healthy seropositive individuals. Most AIDS patients were found positive for both free and complexed antigen and had high gp41 antibody titres but low or undetectable p24 antibody. Between January 1988 and June 1992, 35 patients with primary anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL)CD30+ were referred to one of the institutions participating in GISL (Gruppo Italiano per lo Studio dei Linformi). 16 patients were treated with ProMACE-CytaBOM, two with MACOP-B, one with CHOP and one with LSA2-L2. As of November 1990, all newly diagnosed patients were treated with MOPP/EBV/CAD hybrid. 27 (77%) cases of ALCL CD30+ and 8 (23%) cases of Hodgkin's-related (HR) lymphoma CD30+ were diagnosed. Chronic infection by Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) causes liver fibrosis, which is accelerated by unknown mechanisms in patients with HIV-1 coinfection. The evolution of HCV quasispecies in this setting of coinfection is not fully understood. To compare HCV quasispecies between HIV-HCV coinfection and HCV monoinfection, we sequenced 340 HCV clones from the HVR-1 and NS3 regions at two different time points in two groups of treatment-naive patients with HCV-1a infection: (1) HIV-HCV positive (n=6); and (2) HIV negative-HCV positive (n=3). BACKGROUND Expression of nm23 has been shown to be inversely correlated with the metastatic potential of several human cancers. In the current study, the expression and prognostic impact of nm23 was immunohistochemically studied in 413 curatively resected gastric carcinomas. METHODS Tumor sections of the 413 gastric carcinomas were stained with a polyclonal antibody that was raised against the nm23-H1/NDP kinase A, which is identical to the nm23-H1 gene product.
