A TRNG Exploiting Multi-Source Physical Data

2010

In recent years, the considerable progress of miniaturization and the consequent increase of the efficiency of digital circuits has allowed a great diffusion of the wireless sensor network technology. This has led to the growth of applications and protocols for applying these networks to several scenarios, such as the military one, where it is essential to deploy security protocols in order to prevent opponents from accessing the information exchanged among sensor nodes. This paper analyzes security issues of data processed by the WSN and describes a system able to generate sequences of random numbers, which can be used by security algorithms and protocols. The proposed True Random Number G…

A Programmable Networked Processing Node for 3D Brain Vessels Reconstruction

2011

Real-time 3D imaging represents a developing trend in medical imaging. However, most of the 3D medical imaging algorithms are computationally intensive. In this paper, a programmable networked node for 3D brain vessels reconstruction is proposed. Starting from 2D PC-MRA (Phase-Contrast Magnetic Resonance Angiography) sequences, the node is able to generate the 3D brain vasculature using the MIP (Maximum Intensity Projection) algorithm. The node has been prototyped on the Celoxica RC203E board, equipped with a Virtex II FPGA, to get the advantages of an hardware implementation, reaching a better throughput with respect to analogous software implementations. Its generality and programmable ca…

Body Area Networks and Healthcare

2014

Derived from Wireless Sensor Networks, Body Area Networks, comprise a wide range of typologies with sensor nodes placed on, close to, or implanted in the body that measure physiological signs. The availability of compact mobile computing devices makes it possible to integrate traditional healthcare with new powerful means. New paradigms in public health are arising from these developments, such as e-health and mHealth, and new converging applications can be envisioned. Physiological data acquisition provided by BANs may give care providers a unobtrusive real-time view on patient’s health. On the other hand, the patient may be informed, assisted and even given the proper treatment by care pr…

Polynomial mapped bases: theory and applications

2022

Abstract In this paper, we collect the basic theory and the most important applications of a novel technique that has shown to be suitable for scattered data interpolation, quadrature, bio-imaging reconstruction. The method relies on polynomial mapped bases allowing, for instance, to incorporate data or function discontinuities in a suitable mapping function. The new technique substantially mitigates the Runge’s and Gibbs effects.

Impact of Human Leukocyte Antigen Polymorphisms in Human Immunodeficiency Virus Progression in a Paediatric Cohort Infected with a Mono-phyletic Huma…

2014

Objective: HLA polymorphisms within the peptide binding pocket have been associated with rapid and slowprogression to AIDS, suggesting that the capability to present efficiently HIV-1 epitopes is crucial for the infection control. To minimize the effects of genetic background due to population coming from different geographic area and viral strain variability in the cohort, an analysis of all the polymorphisms associated with the HLA-A, -B and -DR alleles has been performed in a cohort of children with a monophyletic HIV-1 infection (CRF02_AG) during an outbreak in Libya. Methods: High-resolution HLA-typing has been performed in 58 children infected with a monophyletic strain of HIV-1: 26 L…

Carbohydrate assimilation profiles of the first Italian Candida dubliniensis clinical isolates recovered from an HIV-infected individual.

2001

A total of six Candida dubliniensis isolates were obtained during 1 year of monitoring by monthly swabs from the oral cavity of an asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus-infected individual in Catania, Italy. To the authors' knowledge, this constitutes the first recovery of C. dubliniensis from a human in Italy. Our identification procedure was based on colony color on CHROMagar Candida and carbohydrate assimilation profiles obtained by two commercial systems: API ID 32C and API 20C AUX. Karyotyping by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis confirmed the phenotypic identification. The biocodes obtained with API 20C AUX and with API ID 32C were 6172134 and 7142140015, respectively, for all six …

MODIFICAZIONI ECOGRAFICHE DELLA LINFADENOPATIA DELL’ILO EPATICO DOPO ERADICAZIONE DELL’HCV CON DIRECT-ACTING ANTIVIRALS

2019

Completion axillary lymph node dissection can be avoid in patients with invasive breast cancer and sentinel lymph node micrometastases

2017

The prognostic value of sentinel lymph node (SLN) micrometastases in invasive breast cancer patients is still widely debated. Even if, in the absence of unequivocal guidelines, the axillary lynphadenectomy is not still performed in the routine clinical care of these patients. We have retrospectively analyzed 897 patients with operable invasive breast cancer and clinically negative axillary lymph nodes underwent conservative surgery or total mastectomy with SLN biopsy. Two groups of patients with SLN micrometastases and isolated tumor cells (ITC) were considered, the first one treated with completion axillary dissection, the second one not followed by further surgical axillary procedure. The …

The sentinel node biopsy is not contraindicated in multifocal breast carcinoma

2011

Aim. Following the availability of the results ofvalidation studies, the sentinel lymph node biopsy(SLNB) has replaced routine axillary dissection(AD) as the new standard of care in early unifocal breast cancers.Multifocal (MF) and multicentric (MC) tumours have been considered as a contraindication for this technique due to the possible incidence of a higher false-negative rate. In this retrospective study we try to demonstrate the usefulness of SLNB in MF/MC breast carcinoma. Patients and Methods. Eight hundreds and fiftyeightpatients with breast carcinoma underwent a conservative surgery and sentinel node excision. Ninety-four out of 858 patients had histological diagnosis of multifocal …
