Resection of the mesopancreas (RMP): a new surgical classification of a known anatomical space

2007

Abstract Background Prognosis after surgical therapy for pancreatic cancer is poor and has been attributed to early lymph node involvement as well as to a strong tendency of cancer cells to infiltrate into the retropancreatic tissue and to spread along the peripancreatic neural plexuses. The objective of our study was to classify the anatomical-surgical layer of the mesopancreas and to describe the surgical principles relevant for resection of the mesopancreas (RMP). Immunohistochemical investigation of the mesopancreatic-perineural lymphogenic structures was carried out with the purpose of identifying possible routes of metastatic spread. Methods Resection of the mesopancreas (RMP) was per…

Kawasaki disease: guidelines of the Italian Society of Pediatrics, part I - definition, epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, clinical expression and manag…

2018

Abstract The primary purpose of these practical guidelines related to Kawasaki disease (KD) is to contribute to prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment on the basis of different specialists’ contributions in the field. A set of 40 recommendations is provided, divided in two parts: the first describes the definition of KD, its epidemiology, etiopathogenetic hints, presentation, clinical course and general management, including treatment of the acute phase, through specific 23 recommendations. Their application is aimed at improving the rate of treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin and the overall potential development of coronary artery abnormalities in KD. Guidelines, however, should…

Typhlitis as a complication of influenza in a patient with advanced HIV infection.

2018

The authors report the case of an HIV-infected patient who presented with typhlitis as a complication of typical influenza. To the best of their knowledge, this is the first case reported in the literature with such an association of clinical conditions.

Leukocyte adhesion deficiency type I - a focus on oral disease in a young child

2010

This paper presents a case of the moderate form of Leukocyte adhesion deficiency type 1 (LAD-1) in a 4 year-old boy. LAD-1 is a rare, inherited immunodeficiency that affects 1 in 1 million people yearly. Affected patients are susceptible to recurrent bacterial and fungal infections, impaired pus formation and delayed wound healing. In the oral clinical finding, more important is a generalized prepuberal periodontitis that can affect the primary and permanent dentitions. For this reason cooperation between dentists and pediatricians is essential in these patients. Evaluating immune system in these patients included peripheral blood leukocyte counts, measurement of serum immunoglobulin levels…

Protein Cargo of Salivary Small Extracellular Vesicles as Potential Functional Signature of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

2021

The early diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is still an investigative challenge. Saliva has been proposed as an ideal diagnostic medium for biomarker detection by mean of liquid biopsy technique. The aim of this pilot study was to apply proteomic and bioinformatic strategies to determine the potential use of saliva small extracellular vesicles (S/SEVs) as a potential tumor biomarker source. Among the twenty-three enrolled patients, 5 were free from diseases (OSCC_FREE), 6 were with OSCC without lymph node metastasis (OSCC_NLNM), and 12 were with OSCC and lymph node metastasis (OSCC_LNM). The S/SEVs from patients of each group were pooled and properly characterized before perf…

TA-MUC1 epitope in non-small cell lung cancer

2007

MUC1 (CD227), an established tumor marker, is expressed on glandular epithelia and on epithelial tumors. Tumor MUC1 differs from normal MUC1 by modified glycan side chains. Recently, a novel carbohydrate-induced conformational tumor-associated MUC1 epitope (TA-MUC1) was described, whose clinical relevance in lung cancer is not known. Eighty-five paraffin embedded tissue sections of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients (73% male; mean age 64+/-9 years) were stained with the monoclonal antibody PankoMab (against TA-MUC1) and compared with the established antibodies E29 and 214D4 regarding prognostic relevance. TA-MUC1 is virtually absent in bronchial epithelium. As shown by multivariat…

Coronary artery bypass grafting in adult coronary artery disease due to suspected Kawasaki disease in childhood

2000

Development of coronary artery aneurysms is one typical complication of Kawasaki disease and can cause coronary artery disease even in early childhood. Information about course and outcome in adults is rare. Here, we present a 49-year-old man with serious three-vessel coronary artery disease and giant coronary artery aneurysms following suspected Kawasaki disease.
