Reduction of oxygen to H2O2 at carbon felt cathode in undivided cells. Effect of the ratio between the anode and the cathode surfaces and of other op…
2019
Abstract In the last years, the electrochemical conversion of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide at carbon felt has been largely studied in order to define a new route for the production of H2O2 and to optimize the electro-Fenton process, which is based on the cathodic generation of H2O2. In particular, many studies regarding electro-Fenton process were carried out in undivided cells in order to avoid the costs of the separator and to reduce the cell potentials. Hence, in order to optimize the cathodic conversion of oxygen to H2O2 in undivided cells, the effect of many parameters linked to the anodic process were here evaluated. In particular, it was demonstrated that the performances of the proce…
Photoelectrochemical characterization of Cu2O-nanowire arrays electrodeposited into anodic alumina membranes
2007
Perfectly aligned nanowire arrays of polycrystalline Cu2O were grown by template-pulsed electrodeposition from a cupric acetate-sodium acetate bath into anodic alumina membranes (AAM). The photoelectrochemical behavior of arrays with different nanowire lengths (0.5 mu m and 2 mu m) was investigated in neutral solution, and the results compared to those pertaining to Cu2O films grown with the same procedure. Although all samples displayed the same indirect bandgap (similar to 1.9 eV), differences were observed both in photocurrent intensity and sign. The latter changed with potential and wavelength in different ways for nanowires and films, revealing a different defect concentration in the t…
Development of an Electrochemical Process for the Simultaneous Treatment of Wastewater and the Conversion of Carbon Dioxide to Higher Value Products
2016
Many researchers have shown that selected anodic processes allow effective treatment of a very large amount of wastewater contaminated by pollutants resistant to biological processes. In the meantime, various authors have also shown that carbon dioxide can be converted into higher value products, such as formic acid or synthesis gas, by cathodic reduction at suitable cathodes. These two processes present interesting economic potential that, however, still needs to be improved for further development at an industrial level. Herein, these two kinds of process are combined in the same cell to improve their economic feasibility. In particular, the anodic treatment of wastewater at a boron-doped…
Calcium phosphate/polyvinyl acetate coatings on SS304 via galvanic co-deposition for orthopedic implant applications
2021
Abstract In this work, the galvanic deposition method is used to deposit coatings of brushite/hydroxyapatite/polyvinyl acetate on 304 stainless steel. Coatings are obtained at different temperatures and with different sacrificial anodes, consisting of a mixture of brushite and hydroxyapatite. Samples are aged in a simulated body fluid (SBF), where a complete conversion of brushite into hydroxyapatite with a simultaneous change in morphology and wettability occurred. The corrosion tests show that, compared with bare 304, the coating shifts Ecorr to anodic values and reduces icorr Ecorr, and icorr has different values at different aging times due to chemical interactions at the solid/liquid i…
Phenothiazine dye featuring encapsulated insulated molecular wire as auxiliary donor for high photovoltage of dye-sensitized solar cells by suppressi…
2019
Abstract Two efficient dye-sensitized solar cells have been fabricated by two novel D–D–π–A phenothiazine-based organic dyes (PH2 and PH3) with an encapsulated insulated molecular wire (EIMW) as an auxiliary donor. The cell sensitized by PH2 with EIMW as an auxiliary donor shows a much higher photovoltage (Voc) relative to the reference dye PH1 without EIMW, because the former dye can inhibit dye aggregation and suppress the charge recombination effectively. The results show that the cell sensitized by PH2 with co-adsorption of chenodeoxycholic acid obtains a high power conversion efficiency, even higher than that of the cell based on N719. Thus, an effective way to increase the photovoltag…
Electrochemical oxidation of organics at metal oxide electrodes: The incineration of oxalic acid at IrO2-Ta2O5 (DSA-O2) anode
2008
Abstract The electrochemical incineration of oxalic acid (OA) at Ti/IrO2–Ta2O5 (DSA-O2) anode was investigated to find the influence of the operative parameters on the performances of the process. Polarization curves and chronoamperometric measurements indicate the probable occurrence of a direct electrochemical oxidation of OA at the surface of the DSA anode. In incineration electrolyses, the performances of the process in terms of OA conversion and current efficiency dramatically depend on the adopted operative conditions. Interestingly, very high OA removal and current efficiency were obtained when the process was performed at relatively high temperatures (50 °C) or in the presence of Na…
Protective mechanisms occurring on zinc coated steel cut-edges in immersion conditions
2011
Abstract Electrochemical processes occurring on the cut-edge of a galvanized steel immersed in NaCl solutions were studied using numerical simulations, and in situ current and pH profiles measured over the cut-edge. These results clearly demonstrate that only the steel surface remote from the zinc coating is cathodically active, oxygen reduction being strongly inhibited in the vicinity of zinc. This trend was confirmed by local polarization curves recorded on these distinct areas. Ex-situ AES and SEM analysis and cathodic polarization curves in solutions containing Zn 2+ ions led to conclude that this cathodic inhibition was related to the fast nucleation of a dense Zn(OH) 2 film on the ste…
Investigation of self-healing mechanism on galvanized steels cut edges by coupling SVET and numerical modeling
2008
Local cathodic inhibition has been observed on the cut-edge of galvanized steel immersed in 0.03 M NaCl solution using the scanning vibrating electrode technique. The current distribution results indicate that cathodic inhibition occurs in a limited spatial zone located between the cathodic sites on the steel and the anodic sites on the exposed zinc surface. The experimental current distributions are compared with the results of numerical simulations that show the specific diagnostic features for the detection of cathodic inhibition from scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) data so as to distinguish the zero current regions from experimental artifacts due to the lateral resolution …

Mechanical properties and corrosion behaviour after scratch and tribological tests of electrodeposited Co-Mo/TiO2 nano-composite coatings
2019
International audience; The micro-mechanical (Young’s modulus and hardness) and tribological properties, as well as the scratch resistance of Co-Mo/TiO2 nano-composite coatings were investigated. The coating was found to be harder and stiffer than the substrate (pure cobalt). Low residual stresses were also derived from Stoney’s equation (type I stress). The corrosion behaviour after tribological and scratch tests was studied in Ringer’s solution. Dry sliding of the coating against an alumina ball at the load of 1 N or 2 N over the same distance had nearly no influence onthe anodic branch of the polarisation curves. By contrast, the current density in the cathodic branch (oxygen reduction r…
