Categorical versus geometric morphometric approaches to characterizing the evolution of morphological disparity in Osteostraci (Vertebrata, stem Gnat…

2020

Morphological variation (disparity) tends to be evaluated through two non-mutually exclusive approaches: (i) quantitatively, through geometric morphometrics, and (ii) in terms of discrete, ‘cladistic’, or categorical characters. Uncertainty over the comparability of these approaches diminishes the potential to obtain nomothetic insights into the evolution of morphological disparity, and the few benchmarking studies conducted so far show contrasting results. Here, we apply both approaches to characterising morphology in the stem-gnathostome vertebrate clade Osteostraci, in order to assess congruence between these alternative methods as well as to explore the evolutionary patterns of the grou…

A new approach to the identification of cognitive conflicts in the repertory grid: A nomothetic study

1994

Abstract Two separate but related investigations are reported. In the first, a score was derived from a construct correlation matrix obtained by grid data processing. This score, the Correlation Test (CT) score, expresses the percentage of unbalanced triads in the construct correlation matrix and is considered to assess logical inconsistency. It is discussed as being qualitatively different from other scores derived from construct correlation matrices, such as cognitive complexity scores. It is suggested that the CT score refers to cognitive integration, whereas other scores usually refer to cognitive differentiation. The second investigation was an attempt to trace the clinical implication…

A Sociohistorical View of Cultural Policies

2007

There is a need to articulate the theoretical basis for the historical orientation in cultural policy research. In this article I will delineate a theoretical frame in which various aspects of politics are taken into account in relation to research on cultural policy histories. My thesis will be based comprised of the following three components: (1) the contingency of human action; (2) the public nature of political action, and (3) culture as a realized signifying system. Another aim is to illustrate the importance of carrying out historical research that links empirical data and theoretical research in order to successfully expound the histories of cultural policies. Furthermore, I will ar…
