Experimental study of electrical FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons with modified excitability
2006
International audience; We present an electronical circuit modelling a FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron with a modified excitability. To characterize this basic cell, the bifurcation curves between stability with excitation threshold, bistability and oscillations are investigated. An electrical circuit is then proposed to realize a unidirectional coupling between two cells, mimicking an inter-neuron synaptic coupling. In such a master-slave configuration, we show experimentally how the coupling strength controls the dynamics of the slave neuron, leading to frequency locking, chaotic behavior and synchronization. These phenomena are then studied by phase map analysis. The architecture of a possible ne…
Host–virus evolutionary dynamics with specialist and generalist infection strategies: Bifurcations, bistability, and chaos
2019
In this work, we have investigated the evolutionary dynamics of a generalist pathogen, e.g., a virus population, that evolves toward specialization in an environment with multiple host types. We have particularly explored under which conditions generalist viral strains may rise in frequency and coexist with specialist strains or even dominate the population. By means of a nonlinear mathematical model and bifurcation analysis, we have determined the theoretical conditions for stability of nine identified equilibria and provided biological interpretation in terms of the infection rates for the viral specialist and generalist strains. By means of a stability diagram, we identified stable fixed…
Bivariate nonlinear prediction to quantify the strength of complex dynamical interactions in short-term cardiovascular variability.
2005
A nonlinear prediction method for investigating the dynamic interdependence between short length time series is presented. The method is a generalization to bivariate prediction of the univariate approach based on nearest neighbor local linear approximation. Given the input and output series x and y, the relationship between a pattern of samples of x and a synchronous sample of y was approximated with a linear polynomial whose coefficients were estimated from an equation system including the nearest neighbor patterns in x and the corresponding samples in y. To avoid overfitting and waste of data, the training and testing stages of the prediction were designed through a specific out-of-sampl…
Dissipative lattice model with exact traveling discrete kink-soliton solutions: Discrete breather generation and reaction diffusion regime
1999
International audience; We introduce a nonlinear Klein-Gordon lattice model with specific double-well on-site potential, additional constant external force and dissipation terms, which admits exact discrete kink or traveling wave fronts solutions. In the nondissipative or conservative regime, our numerical simulations show that narrow kinks can propagate freely, and reveal that static or moving discrete breathers, with a finite but long lifetime, can emerge from kink-antikink collisions. In the general dissipative regime, the lifetime of these breathers depends on the importance of the dissipative effects. In the overdamped or diffusive regime, the general equation of motion reduces to a di…

Dynamics of Two Picophytoplankton Groups in Mediterranean Sea: Analysis of the Deep Chlorophyll Maximum by a Stochastic Advection-Reaction-Diffusion …
2013
A stochastic advection-reaction-diffusion model with terms of multiplicative white Gaussian noise, valid for weakly mixed waters, is studied to obtain the vertical stationary spatial distributions of two groups of picophytoplankton, i.e., picoeukaryotes and Prochlorococcus, which account about for 60% of total chlorophyll on average in Mediterranean Sea. By numerically solving the equations of the model, we analyze the one-dimensional spatio-temporal dynamics of the total picophytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentration along the water column at different depths. In particular, we integrate the equations over a time interval long enough, obtaining the steady spatial distributions for th…
Evaluation of enantioselective binding of fluoxetine to human serum albumin by ultrafiltration and CE - Experimental design and quality considerations
2012
Several pharmacokinetic processes are affected by enantioselectivity (ES). At the level of distribution, protein binding (PB) is one of the most important. The enantioselective binding of fluoxetine (FLX) to HSA has been evaluated in this work by ultrafiltration of FLX–HSA mixtures and chiral analysis of unbound fractions by EKC-CD. PB, affinity constants (K) and ES were obtained for both enantiomers of FLX. In order to improve the consistency of the estimations, the evaluation of affinity constants of each enantiomer was performed using two designs, one keeping constant the total concentration of protein and varying the total concentration of the enantiomers, and the other in the opposite …
Active spike transmission in the neuron model with a winding threshold manifold
2012
International audience; We analyze spiking responses of excitable neuron model with a winding threshold manifold on a pulse stimulation. The model is stimulated with external pulse stimuli and can generate nonlinear integrate-and-fire and resonant responses typical for excitable neuronal cells (all-or-none). In addition we show that for certain parameter range there is a possibility to trigger a spiking sequence with a finite number of spikes (a spiking message) in the response on a short stimulus pulse. So active transformation of N incoming pulses to M (with M>N) outgoing spikes is possible. At the level of single neuron computations such property can provide an active "spike source" comp…
Digital information receiver based on stochastic resonance
2003
International audience; An electronic receiver based on stochastic resonance is presented to rescue subthreshold modulated digital data. In real experiment, it is shown that a complete data restoration is achieved for both uniform and Gaussian white noise.
Stochastic analysis of dynamical systems with delayed control forces
2006
Abstract Reduction of structural vibration in actively controlled dynamical system is usually performed by means of convenient control forces dependent of the dynamic response. In this paper the existent studies will be extended to dynamical systems subjected to non-normal delta-correlated random process with delayed control forces. Taylor series expansion of the control forces has been introduced and the statistics of the dynamical response have been obtained by means of the extended Ito differential rule. Numerical application provided shows the capabilities of the proposed method to analyze stochastic dynamic systems with delayed actions under delta-correlated process contrasting statist…
