Universal description of pattern formation in optical oscillators under bichromatic injection

2018

We study pattern formation in a complex Swift–Hohenberg equation with phase-sensitive (parametric) gain. Such an equation serves as a universal order parameter equation describing the onset of spontaneous oscillations in extended systems submitted to a bichromatic injection when the instability is toward long (transverse) wavelengths. Applications include two-level lasers and photorefractive oscillators. Under such an injection, the original continuous phase symmetry of the system is replaced by a discrete one and phase bistability emerges. This leads to the spontaneous formation of phase-locked spatial structures, such as phase domains and dark-ring (phase) cavity solitons. The stability o…

Line of polarization attraction in highly birefringent optical fibers

2014

We investigate the phenomenon of polarization attraction in a highly birefringent fiber. This polarization process originates from the nonlinear interaction of two counter-propagating beams. We show that all polarization states of the forward (signal) beam are attracted toward a specific line of polarization states on the surface of the Poincare sphere, whose characteristics are determined by the polarization state of the injected backward (pump) beam. This phenomenon of polarization attraction takes place without any loss of energy for the signal beam. The stability of different stationary solutions is also discussed through intensive numerical simulations. On the basis of mathematical tec…

Multivalued solutions for the output intensity of a semilinear photorefractive oscillator and stability analysis

2007

The analysis of pump-ratio dependences of the output intensity for a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator reveals two domains of multivalued solutions for sufficiently large coupling strength ensured by the crystal. We show that even in a strictly degenerate case the nonzero output intensity can be reached in a broad range of pump ratios r from 10−6 to infinity, including the interval where both pump intensities coincide or are very close to each other. This does not contradict the existence of the known gap in the oscillation threshold near the equal intensities of two pump waves: in this particular region the oscillation is not self-starting. The output intensities for frequency…

Thermodynamic approach of statistical nonlinear optics

2009

The coherence properties of random nonlinear optical fields can be described in detail by thermodynamic arguments based on the wave turbulence theory. We shall review recent progress on this kinetic approach of statistical nonlinear optics.

Nonlinear interaction of light with Bose-Einstein condensate: new methods to generate subpoissonian light

2004

We consider $\Lambda$-type model of the Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium atoms interacting with the light. Coefficients of the Kerr-nonlinearity in the condensate can achieve large and negative values providing the possibility for effective control of group velocity and dispersion of the probe pulse. We find a regime when the observation of the "slow" and "fast" light propagating without absorption becomes achievable due to strong nonlinearity. An effective two-level quantum model of the system is derived and studied based on the su(2) polynomial deformation approach. We propose an efficient way for generation of subpoissonian fields in the Bose-Einstein condensate at time-scales much sho…

Controlled Observation of a Nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch Transition in a Nonlinear Optical Cavity

2004

We describe the controlled observation of the nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch transition in a broad area nonlinear optical cavity, namely, a quasi-1D single longitudinal-mode photorefractive oscilator in a degenerate four-wave mixing configuration. Our experimental technique allows for the controlled injection of the domain walls. We use cavity detuning as control parameter and find that both Ising and Bloch walls can exist for the same detuning values within a certain interval of detunings, i.e., the Ising-Bloch transition is hysteretic in our case. A complex Ginzburg-Landau model is used for supporting the observations.

Dissipative polarization domain walls as persisting topological defects

2018

We experimentally demonstrate the existence of dissipative polarization domain walls in a normally dispersive Kerr resonator. We excite and trap them with appropriate external signals thus realizing an all-optical buffer for topological data.
