Turing Patterns in Nonlinear Optics

2000

The phenomenon of pattern formation in nonlinear optical resonators is commonly related to an off-resonance excitation mechanism, where patterns occur due to mismatch between the excitation and resonance frequency. In this paper we show that the patterns in nonlinear optics can also occur due to the interplay between diffractions of coupled field components. The reported mechanism is analogous to that of local activation and lateral inhibition found in reaction-diffusion systems by Turing. We study concretely the degenerate optical parametric oscillators. A local activator-lateral inhibitor mechanism is responsible for generation of Turing patterns in form of hexagons.

Four-phase patterns in a forced nonlinear optical oscillator

2009

We present preliminary theoretical and experimental results indicating that a high Fresnel number nonlinear optical oscillator with planar mirrors can display four-phase multistability, eventually leading to four-phase patterns. Such situation is similar to that emerging in extended oscillatory systems forced within a 4:1 resonance and, to the best of our knowledge, has not been predicted nor observed previously in an optical system.

Optical hysteresis in a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator

2007

International audience; High contrast optical bistability is found experimentally in the pump-ratio dependences of the output intensity of a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator with two counterpropagating pump waves. The data are in qualitative agreement with the results of calculation.

Spatiotemporal Complexity in Step-Index Multimode Fibers

2016

We study supercontinuum generation in step-index fibers with a varying number of modes. We observe new spatiotemporal effects, including evidence of multimode spectral incoherent solitons, and a universal transition to spatiotemporal complexity.

Grating compensated dispersion-managed systems incorporating nonlinear optical loop mirrors

2006

In this work, we investigate the use of nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs) in DM fiber systems compensated by CFGs with GDR by launching a 128-bit Gaussian-shaped pseudo-random bit sequence having pulse width of 5 ps for simulating a 40 Gb/s system. The dispersion map contains a fiber segment of length 10.3 km and a CFG with dispersion of -15.6 ps/nm. We consider a lossless grating and the GDR is modeled by a sinusoidal function for simplicity. We have shown that the use of NOLMs can substantially improve the transmission performance in a grating-compensated DM fiber system even with presence of amplifier noise and random variations of GDR, parameters in CFGs along the propagation dista…

Laser-induced field-free alignment of the OCS molecule

2007

We investigate the dynamical alignment of jet-cooled OCS molecules induced by a short laser pulse. The alignment is measured through the orientational contribution of the optical Kerr effect using a second weak laser pulse as a probe. Maximum alignment is observed at conditions close to saturation of ionization. The results are analysed with a quantum mechanical model solving for the rotational dynamics.

Incoherent modulation instability in instantaneous nonlinear Kerr media

2005

We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally in an optical fiber system that partially temporally incoherent light exhibits modulational instability during its propagation in an instantaneous response nonlinear medium. We show that the modulation frequency and gain are substantially increased with respect to the corresponding values of coherent modulational instability.

Counter-propagating difference-frequency generation in diamond with terahertz fields

2013

The nonlinear interaction of terahertz (THz) pulses with optical fields in Kerr, gaseous media is a key ingredient for broadband THz detection schemes [1]. Terahertz field-induced second harmonic generation in solid-state media has also been considered for THz detection and as a tool e.g. for liquid dynamics investigations [2,3], while four-wave mixing has been addressed as a possible mechanism for THz generation [4,5]. © 2013 IEEE.
