Preparation and nonlinear optics of monodisperse oligo(1,4-phenyleneethynylene)s

2001

Oligo(1,4-phenyleneethynylene)s 1a−e, with solubilizing propoxy side chains, were prepared by use of Hagihara−Sonogashira coupling reactions. The synthetic strategy was based on a building block system and on the use of trimethylsilyl and triisopropylsilyl protecting groups that could be cleaved selectively. The extension of the conjugation with an increasing number of repeat units provokes a bathochromic shift of the long wavelength absorption and a superlinear increase of the second hyperpolarizability |γ|. The corresponding third harmonic generation (THG) measurements were performed using polystyrene matrices and variable laser wavelengths. We conclude that the conjugation length is much…

Divergent route to the preparation of hybrid Pt–Fe 2,4,6-Tris(4-ethynyl)phenyl-1,3,5-triazine metallodendrimers for nonlinear optics

2013

Abstract: The synthesis strategy for the preparation of novel platinum acetylide homometallic and heterobimetallic dendrimers (containing Fe as the other metal fragment) based on a 2,4,6-tris(4-ethynyl)phenyl-1,3,5-triazine core (3) is reported. All the dendrimer generations (G0G2) were synthesized under copper-free conditions following a divergent route. The G0-Pt dendrimer (4) was synthesized using the 1,3,5-triazine core (3) and cis-[Pt(PEt3)2Cl2] with a molar ratio of 1/4. The advantage of the current method is that different dendrimers can be prepared by following the same procedure with only changes in the molar ratios of the reactants involved. For instance, when 3 reacts with 4 in a…

Dodecyloxy-substituted 2,4,6-tris(styryl)pyridines

2008

(E,E,E)-2,4,6-Tris(styryl)pyridines 2a-c with 3, 6 or 9 dodecyloxy substituents were prepared by the highly stereoselective condensation reaction of collidine (8) and the corresponding phenyl-(1-phenyl-methylidene)amines 7a-c (Siegrist reaction). In contrast to the corresponding compounds with a benzene or a 1,3,5-triazine core, 2a-c do not show any hints for the formation of thermotropic liquid crystals. The major application of such star-shaped systems is in the field of nonlinear optics.

Temporal incoherent solitons supported by a defocusing nonlinearity with anomalous dispersion

2012

http://pra.aps.org/; International audience; We study temporal incoherent solitons in noninstantaneous response nonlinear media. Contrarily to the usual temporal soliton, which is known to require a focusing nonlinearity with anomalous dispersion, we show that a highly noninstantaneous nonlinear response leads to incoherent soliton structures which require the inverted situation: In the focusing regime (and anomalous dispersion) the incoherent wave packet experiences an unlimited spreading, whereas in the defocusing regime (still with anomalous dispersion) the incoherent wave packet exhibits a self-trapping. These counterintuitive results are explained in detail by a long-range Vlasov formu…

Spatio-temporal Characteristics of THz Emission at the Subwavelength Scale via Optical Rectification

2011

Highly localized THz emission via optical rectification in thin nonlinear crystals is a promising method for subwavelength microscopy. We present here the peculiar THz spatio-temporal characteristics induced by the non-paraxial generation regime.

<title>Second harmonic generation in selenium thin films</title>

2008

Results of second harmonic (SH) generation in amorphous and crystalline selenium films induced by titanium-sapphire femtosecond laser (wavelength λ - 800-1000 nm) are presented. It is found that the highest intensity of SH is provided by fundamental wave at wavelength 1000 nm and it reaches maximum in approximately 100 sec. The intensity of transmitted SH depends on film thickness while that of reflected does not.

<title>Second harmonic generation in selenium-metal structures</title>

2008

The article examines the processes of second harmonic generation (SHG) when selenium-metal (Cu) film structures are illuminated by femtosecond radiation (180 fs, 80 MHz) at wavelength 800 - 1000 nm. Selenium-copper structures were obtained by successive thermal evaporation of selenium and copper onto the glass substrate in vacuum. Microanalysis of the film composition was performed to determine amount of copper in thin films. The as-evaporated selenium-copper structures were crystallised by annealing in inert atmosphere at temperature 85°C. Just evaporated as well as annealed thin films were explored. The experiment was performed by confocal microscope [1] where the femtosecond radiation fr…

Electron crystallography and non-linear optics

1999

Electron crystallography can be used to obtain specific information about molecular parameters such as the polarisability, dipole moment, and hyperpolarisability. In this, work we show how a combination of quantum mechanics and simulation methods can be used to solve several unknown organic structures and how the calculated molecular parameters can be used to predict the corresponding physical properties of the crystals.

Potentialities of microfibers for non linear optics

2010

Micro- and nanofibers present attractive optical properties and may be used in a variety of structures and devices. We report in this work the first global study on the non linear properties of these microfibers: an adequate source is built and its characteristics are described, our first results with a silica loop resonator are presented. Third harmonic generation is obtained in these conditions, however, the low intrinsic non linear index prevents the generation of large non linear effects. The use of highly non linear materials, such as soft glasses, is therefore discussed, with their potentialities and the challenges their integration with standard microfibers represent.
