Light bullets and dynamic pattern formation in nonlinear dissipative systems
2005
In the search for suitable new media for the propagation of (3+1) D optical light bullets, we show that nonlinear dissipation provides interesting possibilities. Using the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation model with localized initial conditions, we are able to observe stable light bullet propagation or higher-order transverse pattern formation. The type of evolution depends on the model parameters. ©2005 Optical Society of America.
Spatial Solitons in Quadratic 2D Nonlinear Photonic Crystals
2007
We report on the first investigations into parametric solitary-wave formation in 2D nonlinear photonic crystals and present experimental results obtained in an hexagonally poled LiNbO3 waveguide designed for twin-beam second harmonic generation at telecom wavelengths.
Monte Carlo Analysis of Voltage-Current Characteristic Nonlinearity and Harmonic Generation in Submicron Semiconductor Structures
2006
Using a multiparticles Monte Carlo technique, we investigate the dependence of the nonlinear carrier dynamics in GaAs n+nn+ structures operating under very intense sub-terahertz signals from some process parameters as: i) the frequency and the intensity of the excitation signal and ii) the length of the n region
Spontaneous polarization induced by natural thermalization of incoherent light
2008
We analyze theoretically the polarization properties of a partially coherent optical field that propagates in a nonlinear Kerr medium. We consider the standard model of two resonantly coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which account for a wave-vector mismatch between the orthogonal polarization components. We show that such a phase-mismatch is responsible for the existence of a spontaneous repolarization process of the partially incoherent optical field during its nonlinear propagation. The repolarization process is characterized by an irreversible evolution of the unpolarized beam towards a highly polarized state, without any loss of energy. This unexpected result contrasts with the …
Modulation instability scenario in negative index materials
2010
We present an investigation of the critical frequency windows permitting modulation instability in negative index materials. The principal motivation for our analysis stems from the impact of the inevitable presence of the effective dispersive magnetic permeability in addition to the effective dielectric permittivity determining the propagation model for ultrashort pulses in negative index materials. We emphasize the influence of nonlinear dispersion terms, arising out of the combinatorial effect of the dispersive permeability with the nonlinear polarization, over the MI phenomena, the outcome of its development achieved by using linear stability analysis. Gain spectrum investigation has be…
Bifurcations and multiple-period soliton pulsations in a passively mode-locked fiber laser
2004
The multiple-period pulsations of the soliton parameters in a passively mode-locked fiber laser were discussed numerically and experimentally. It was found that the pulse acquired a periodic evolution that was not related to the round-trip time and consisted of many round trips. The macroperiodicity existed independently or in combination with other periodicity such as period doubling, tripling etc. Analysis shows that the new periods in the soliton modulation appear at bifurcation point related to certain points related to certain values of the cavity parameters.
Comparative analysis of spectral coherence in microresonator frequency combs
2014
Microresonator combs exploit parametric oscillation and nonlinear mixing in an ultrahigh-Q cavity. This new comb generator offers unique potential for chip integration and access to high repetition rates. However, time-domain studies reveal an intricate spectral coherence behavior in this type of platform. In particular, coherent, partially coherent or incoherent combs have been observed using the same microresonator under different pumping conditions. In this work, we provide a numerical analysis of the coherence dynamics that supports the above experimental findings and verify particular design rules to achieve spectrally coherent microresonator combs. A particular emphasis is placed in u…
Nonlinear pulse shaping by coherent addition of multiple redshifted solitons
2011
International audience; The injection of a phase- and amplitude-shaped pulse into a photonic-crystal fiber provides additional degrees of freedom that can significantly influence the nature of nonlinear propagation and nonlinear and dispersive interactions. This strong sensitivity of nonlinear effects-particularly the Raman soliton self-frequency shift-greatly extends the parameter space available to generate tailored output fields for applications such as microscopic imaging. By numerical simulations, we identify the relevant interpulse interactions, and we experimentally demonstrate the additional capabilities of this nonlinear pulse-shaping method.
Phase joint transform sequential correlator for nonlinear binary correlations
2005
We study the performance of nonlinear optical correlations using a joint transform correlator that operates in phase-only spatial light modulation at input joint transform plane. Amplitude input nonlinear optical time sequential correlations have shown better discrimination and noise robustness than conventional linear correlations. Those nonlinear correlations are based on decomposing the reference and the target into binary slices and to add the contribution of all linear correlations between them. Those correlations can be easily implemented using a conventional joint transform correlator. However, the system has poor efficiency and low cross-correlation peak intensity, mainly because of…
